I'm actually in the not a large fan of "Ryder" camp...it feels too Hollywood for me. But I too will be coming up with a name I giggle at to make it tolerable.

That's what it sounds like too me as well.  Yeah its a legit last name but people wont call you bob ryder, you will be addressed as Ryder like its your first name.  And then it will sound like one of those lame hollywood names that they give their kids to prove how different they are.

Skylar Ryder...but call me "Sky" for short.  Has a nice Solomon Gunn like ring to it.  Gotta love those cheesy comicbook names.

Similar but I've never encountered a Shepard as a first name. So it came off more as addressing someone by their last name. What made it suck is everyone did it so that illusion was broken. So yes, but it wasn't as bad of a name.

I wish more people just never used your name. 90+% of the time when I address someone I never use their name. Partly because I suck at remembering names and partly because it's pointless. I pretty much only say someone's name if I'm trying to get their attention. Otherwise the fact that I'm standing in front of them and talking right at them is a big enough clue that I'm addressing them. A Hey, is enough of a greeting I don't need a Hey, Shepard.

I like the name Ryder a lot.

Slowly (very slowly) but surely, ME:A is taking shape and I'm getting more excited with every new detail.

All I know from watching food network far too much is, guy fieri named one of his kids Ryder. That mental image alone wrecks the name for me.(even if his Mac and cheese burger in Vegas is awesome)

Ryder is a stupid name.

If it was good enough for Evelyn Waugh, it's good enough for me. Maybe I'll go with "Julia" for my first FemRyder.

(Lucky for me that I watch PBS a lot more than Food Network.)

Why would someone who is still alive take off their dog tags?

That's what I've been saying. It's a single, loose dog tag. Ryder is dead. The other dog tag is with his body and our PC has this one because s/he killed Ryder.
The sibling thing is too cliched and BioWare already did the same thing with Dragon Age 2.

Isen't that a full-on assumption?

It could just be an easy way to drop a hint in the end...

Maybe they were buddies during training for the Pathfinder Initative, and this Ryder person died?

It's full-on speculation based on what we see.

No matter what they do it will be consider cliche, No route is original anymore but it better than being an empty shell with no connection to universe prior to the games start

They should really just record several common first names into the voice acting, and limit the usage in dialogue to prevent an overburden on VO work.

Example: take 50 common male names, 50 common female, 25 gender neutral - and only use the first name in key scenes. So most characters will use Ryder, in the same way Shepard was used in the original trilogy, but there will be a few scenes (like in the romance scenes) where a character will have a short line using the first name. Maybe a love interest saying, "I'm here for you, [insert name]." It's not that hard for a few different VO actors to record "I'm here for you, [insert name]" 125 times with a couple of takes on each name. That's 250 takes of a line that takes two seconds - that's maybe a half day's work for the entire cast.

Also, I can see it being used early and late in the game when your character (which by all indications will be military) is recognized in a formal or military setting where they use the character's full name ("Lieutenant Commander Jane Ryder").

Even if it was only used a handful of times, I think the effect could be powerful in further cementing a player's feeling that they created a unique individual who shapes a galaxy.

Accidentally, of course, it's important for that to be noted if only to further emphasise how much of an accident Ryder's death was and how it was in no way caused by anything but accidental circumstances that was in no way set in motion by anyone especially not by us.

Ryder even left all of their personal belongings to us over their own family; why would they do that if not because they had the utmost trust in us that we'd respect their last wishes such as never revealing the content of their personal journal in which totally supports our story and in no way indicates any sort of suspecion but we cannot show because as we said, we respect Ryder's last wishes. Said wishes that they totally confided in us in their last moment and made us swear to never reveal to anyone else which we shall never do because we, and this must be stressed, were Ryder's best buddy and so would never want to hurt them in any way post-mortem and especially not pre-mortem.

Oh and taking on Ryder's name was entirely in the spirit of our friendship; they even always said in private that they thought of us as family. Taking on Ryder's life was a way of us honoring them: to symbolize how they live on through us. Cutting out Ryder's head in all of the pictures and replacing it with our own is just more literal symbolism of this and should not seen as a questionable or an indication of belying motive.

So to answer your question; Ryder were our Pathfinder buddy who died a tragic but completely accidental death.

Ryder may well be the N7 trailer character, and the decoy protagonist.

The reason for two dogtags is in the case of the individual being killed, one tag remains with the body to use for identfication while the other is sent to HQ for confirmation of the death and eventually that tag will be sent to the next of kin.

The video only shows the one tag so Ryder is dead and its his/her relative that keeps the tag

that's how I see it

If we are Ryder's relative wouldn't that mean that we are likely still Ryder ourself as well? ^^

I was just thinking that. Maybe the PC collected the tag after not-Shepard dies in the prologue, but there's no way to get it to the family.
