Isn't the point of dog tags that they are used to identify corpses?

"[Dog tags]  commonly contain two copies of the information, either in the form of a single tag that can be broken in half or two identical tags on the same chain. This duplication allows one tag (or half-tag) to be collected from a soldier's body for notification and the second to remain with the corpse when battle conditions prevent it from being immediately recovered." (Wikiapedia)

Momento or retreived from someone just killed.

Edit: themikefest just made this point one page earlier. I got tired of leafing thru all the comments.

That's what I've been saying. It's a single, loose dog tag. Ryder is dead. The other dog tag is with his body and our PC has this one because s/he killed Ryder.
The sibling thing is too cliched and BioWare already did the same thing with Dragon Age 2.

I dunno. Having our PC just kill N7 guy doesn't really sound any better than the alternative to me.

Too many people in this thread trying to steal the Apollo + His brother plot line from 2nd BSG series. Very meh to have a brother/friend that died in training or whatever.

The alternative of a less interesting scenario? I'll take interesting.

I was just thinking that. Maybe the PC collected the tag after not-Shepard dies in the prologue, but there's no way to get it to the family.

If the N7 person dies in the prologue, calling him DuncaN7 is even more fitting.

Personally I like the name Ryder A LOT.

If it gets confirmed, I'm  totally going to name my space cowgirl Nemo Ryder because I always wanted to throw a 20.000 leagues Under the Sea reference into some sci-fi exploration context.

...and Nemo Shepard sounded hella weird.

Why would someone who is still alive take off their dog tags?

Good point, but maybe it's just the one who put it there didn't think about the implication of a single dog tag.

I don't really consider one more interesting than the other, but I don't really care for the idea of our PC keeping the dog tag of someone s/he killed either. Is it supposed to be a trophy or something?

Love it. The nod to Sally Ride is absolutely appropriate, the same way the nod to Alan Shepard was. Ryder also sounds like a great all around protagonist name, same as Hawke and Shepard.

I was thinking the same thing.

If we are Ryder's relative wouldn't that mean that we are likely still Ryder ourself as well? ^^

Sure. I'm just saying with only the one tag being seen that the original owner of that tag is dead. Or, if you like,  could be the original Ryder who's missing a dogtag.  Though I would be curious as to why he/she hasn't got a replacement tag made

Then I want to name mine Valentina, after Valentina Tereshkova.

A reminder of past failings. Serial killers keep trophies. Guilty people keep reminders.

Ryder turning out to be the N7 guy would be interesting, but I think it is more likely a hint at who the protagonist is.

On the other hand, could the 'Ghost Rider' in that Johnny Cash song refer to N7 guy being missing in action? Maybe that is how the protagonist's mission starts out, to find the hero who ended up missing in action on some important mission. It might make sense for the protagonist to be carrying around a dog tag if the game kicks off as a rescue mission of sorts.

Why would someone who is still alive take off their dog tags?

A couple of reasons. Taking a shower or sleeping. That's what I did when I was at my duty station. When I went  out in the field for training, I kept my dogtags around my neck the whole time. When I saw combat, I kept my dogtags around my neck the whole time

I think it's much more likely that mom/dad/maybe SO were in the military and were killed at some point in the past. The new protagonist might not even be in the military ("not Shepard 2.0" according to Bioware) and the N7 guy from the trailer becomes his/her mentor after arriving a new (hostile?) galaxy.

Why would we have one of Ryder's dog tags if he was missing? He would still have both on his neck.

I'll have to say no thanks to auto-guilt. That sounds more annoying than interesting. I didn't like it when they tried it with Shepard, and I don't want it here.

Not necessarily.

I had two sets of dog tags when I was in the military, one metallic and one black. He could always have had another set of dog tags with his gear back at base or on his ship.

I'm leaning towards Ryder being the protagonist though.

They butchered Shepard with the auto-emotions in ME3, but that's an entirely different thing. Having haunted dreams about that little kid and being forced into being an emotional wreck was moronic. Keeping the dog tag of the person whose death you caused is a very different thing. Hell, they could even let you determine what exactly you did to cause Ryder's death(your mistake caused him to die saving you, you allowed him to die to save yourself, or you actively murdered him to advance your career/station in the expedition) and how guilty you feel about it. Throw in Ryder's sibling looking into what happened/eventually finding out and you you've got same tasty drama and character development in a series that is otherwise very straightforward and pedestrian.

Imagine a subplot wherein you murdered Ryder, his sister finds out but you find out that she knows before she gets a chance to tell anyone and you have to choose whether or not to murder her to keep your secret, confess to the crime and potentially end your campaign then and there, or take your chances trying to convince everyone that you're innocent.

Or a scenario wherein you accidentally caused Ryder's death, the sister finds out and holds it over your head to get what she wants(maybe she's xenophobic and wants you to assist in cutting other races out of leadership roles) and the longer you help her the harder it becomes for you to redeem yourself in everyone's eyes, but if you don't help her at all you may never get the chance to redeem yourself, depending on how much influence you have in the Ark.

It adds a new dimension to story and would do a lot to set Mass Effect apart from other games.

That would be awfully contrived. But again, why only 1 dog tag? You don't discard a dog tag for no reason.

Maybe the story is that you're siblings. When you were young your parents sent you to the military for whatever reasons. The PC never wanted to go and after some time he/she finally grew the courage to quit, whereas your sibling went on to become an N7.

Now the N7 Brother is dead (maybe the first trailer, the one with the Cash song, showcases him goinginto the mission he ends up dying in.) Now you're there to continue things your way and you have the photo of both of you plus a parent in the picture and your brother's dogtag.

It would also explain why we're not military but we are still proficient using weapons and military equipment, we just wanted to be a explorer in the ark project.

Maybe people who are pushing for a less militaristic approach to what you're doing in Andromeda helped put you in charge. You know, arguing that because they're siblings the PC is similar enough to N7 Ryder, while also being different enough to help their agenda. Admitedly this last paragraph is me starting to speculate maybe a little too much (since I'm creating two factions inside the ark project.)
