I was just browsing through the appearances again, and I'm wondering why we can't use the NPC armours/why are they locked out?

Are they even locked out? I would like players to wear the armour like;

It's a custom appearance of the NPC creature, not a piece of armour in that case.  Some of these NPC appearances have been made into full-body armour wearable by playable races (mostly just the human-based ones, though, almost never dwarves or gnomes) by other people.  You can find some uploaded here and there.

That'd make sense :P

Shame they didn't make them actual armours..

Keep in mind that 'actual armour' in this game is really just a body model without hands or lower legs, so it's not that much different to an NPC or creature body model.

I converted the vampire body models into armour by cloning them to use the human and elf armour file naming conventions, and altering the alpha channel on the texture to make the hands and lower legs invisible. Quick and nasty, but it works (although not if you're a gnome, dwarf or half-orc).
