I've been wondering this for a while. He's my favorite character and would love him in the party since I'm going 2h. Is he a good tank?

1) Wrong game forum.  This is for DA:O, not DA:I.

2) Iron Bull can be an effective tank if built right.  He's not as well-suited to it as Cassandra or Blackwall, but once you get him up to speed, he can tank just as well.  Early on you will have to baby-sit him, especially during boss fights, and having a mage that casts Barrier (either the Inquisitor, Solas, Dorian, or Vivienne) is a must to keep him standing.  Later on, as you get better gear and materials, you can give him weapons and armor that give him guard-on-hit, a chance to proc Walking Fortress/Livid (originally Unbowed)/Fade Cloak, and/or allow him to heal on kill.  All of those bonuses help to keep him standing, and they can also help with you and your other party members as well.

I went through my first playthrough on Hard with IB as my tank, my Inquisitor as a Tempest archer rogue, Sera as a secondary ranged rogue, and Dorian as my support mage and did pretty well with that, though there were times where I had to micromanage everyone.  Giving IB upgraded Block & Slash along with Unbowed/Livid, War Cry, Devour, and Charging Bull can all keep him alive fairly well and help him pull a pretty decent amount of aggro away from the rest of the team.  For his damaging abilities, I went with Whirlwind and Mighty Blow along with Grappling Chain to allow him to pull enemies towards him, though you don't have to use those abilities if you want him to use others.

You'll need to have your support mage set up to cast Barrier often, as well as use spells that will disrupt the enemy so as to lessen the burden on IB as you're fighting.  Spells like Horror, Wall of Fire, Wall of Ice, and Static Cage can all be useful abilities to do just that, especially if you cast Static Cage on a group of enemies and follow up with Wall of Fire or Horror.  Bringing Solas with you and speccing him to use spells from the Storm tree along with setting his Rift Mage spells to weaken is a good combination since when shocked enemies are weakened, they fall asleep, leaving them vulnerable to a Nightmare combo which can be triggered by hitting them with Horror or Mind Blast, iirc (there may be other spells that do that, but idk for sure).

Thank you so much!

No problem, but I am mostly going off of memory since I haven't played DA:I in months.  No idea how having IB as your tank will affect playing through the DLCs since I haven't played through any of them with IB as my tank (only have Jaws of Hakkon, though, since I'm on PS3).

As I said, you'll get more responses on the DA:I Combat forum.  They'll also likely be more in depth than what I typed out.

It's k, we all make mistakes. I'm luckily one of those players that played DAI. So no big deal!
