I remember hearing rumours that Fallout 4 was originally supposed to be male only (until you complete the game and it allows you to switch to female), that cinematic makes me wonder if that truly was the plan as it does seem based around the idea that you will be playing the male.

While possible I'd put that in the highly unlikely category. Their games have always allowed both genders. It's still possible as this was their first foray into a voiced protagonist in their open world games.

Bethesda's strong points are pretty much opposite to Bioware's. Bethesda has usually quite weak story and characters, when Bioware usually does those well. In other hand Bethesda does open world well. However last time when Bioware tried to bring bit of Bethesda in their game it didn''t work out that well. It went against Bioware's strong points. I don't know if bringing bit Fallout to ME would work any better than bringing bit Skyrim to DAI worked.

Pretty much this. Both have weaknesses, both strong points. Bethesda does good with exploration but come up short, when making an interesting story which usually is 5 hours long. Mindless exploration Bethesda, story Bioware.

Wasn't the problem from Inquisition was that Bioware decided to copy to much of Skyrim's focus on having a bunch of time-consuming sidequests quests?

I'm more worried about what Bethesda might have learned from Bioware, truth be told.

Worried?

More like did learn. Fallout 4 is very BioWare-esque in it's style and presentation of the narrative. That...is a good thing id say.

I would also not see that as a bad thing in the end either.

I believe that it was only a very persistent rumor that you'd not be able to play a female protagonist especially since there seemed to be little to nothing that supported the idea of it. Personally, I could see little reason for why they'd remove gender selection after having it in the franchise for so long and I do not remember seeing anything to indicate that this was ever even considered.

I think the rumor was part of why the developers confirmed that the protagonist could be female; they wanted to quell the last worries some people might have over it. I can appreciate that confirmation since it helped save some people that worry.

I am curious to see how this Fallout game will play out which is amusing to me because it is usually not also in regards to this sort of development that I'm curious about. I blame the forums for getting me thinking about it but in a good way.

As far as I can remember the source that leaked it was pretty spot on about everything else, while it would have been a very bad idea on Bethesda's part to limit gender selection to male (something they realized as well) I don't think it is too far fetched to think that it may have been at least at one point on the table considering the voice acting and the fact that they wanted to tell a more "personal" story.

I wonder if anyone has released a list of all available names yet, surely would not be hard to find with a bit of data mining.

John Cena among them?

Fallout has always had a choice of male and female protagonists.  Going back to the original 1997 game.  I put no stock in that rumor.

Well, Fallout 4 has body customization so hopefully Bioware learns from that and lets us do it in Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Aw, my name isn't on the list. :(

I wonder what Codsworth will refer to you as if the name isn't one of those. Probably just Master or Madam.

Do you get to name your child? From what I have seen it will always be called Shaun, does the appearance of the parents effect the appearance of the son?

Bit disappointed Gladiator isn't on the list of names.

I don't know, Fallout fans don't think Bethesda can make a good Fallout game. Otherwise - just sticking to your roots and not worrying about criticism is probably enough.

BW could still learn from Bethesda. There's a little more to their games than just open world such as character flexibility. In Bethesda games, you're essentially classless and are free to create whatever build that's suitable for the style you want to play. In BW games, you're pretty much stuck with the classes and tools given. That's what I would've taken from Bethesda. Especially since it doesn't compromise the narrative.

No idea. I just like using the name Miami Weiss for a lot of my PCs. Using the German pronunciation for Weiss of course. But getting to use my real name and have the robot use it is kind of cool.

My understanding is you don't name the son, but his appearance is based on the appearance of the parents

And no list where you can name your post-apocalyptic character "Furiosa" ca be all bad  :P

They mostly went with English names with some humorous ones thrown in. I guess that cool anyways and dubbed versions might have different names.

I think ME:A is being developed with exploration in mind, thus the focus on the buggy and the western music of the first trailer, perhaps influenced by the released movie, Guardians of the Galaxy but also evoking frontiers, exploration but also independence and a survivalist self reliance. The values of the romanticized "Wild West" so long as you're not an indigenous American Indian.

Thus I argue the exploration component in ME:A is already there and not to be influenced by FO4. It would be interesting to be setting up outposts or camps with specialist functions but I think this was already approached in DA:I.
