Is there any way to counteract knockdown in a sword and shield build? those tower shield guys are driving me crazy, they seem to be able to knock me down with every hit, with no cooldown.

Payback Strike can do it by default. Combat Roll can as well, but you have to take the "Roll with It" upgrade, which means you lose out on the 250% weapon damage from the "Coming Through" upgrade. Payback Strike also has several other benefits over Combat Roll: it only requires a single point to get, while Combat Roll needs at least 4 to get the upgrade; you've probably already got Payback Strike from getting Turn the Bolt, while Combat Roll requires extra investment. I'm not saying Combat Roll is bad, but for the Knockdown Recovery you want, Payback Strike is probably the better option.

thanks, but how exactly does it work with payback strike? you mean it's automatic?

i had the skill earlier in the game, but respecced towards shield bash, and maybe only then started noticing the knockdowns

I ran through the prologue as an SnS Warrior to see how this worked, and it's pretty simple: if you're knocked down, activate Payback Strike, and you'll get right up. There's no passive to keep from being knocked down that I'm aware of; all you can do is use Payback Strike to recover from it immediately. Or Combat Roll with it's upgrade.

got it, thanks.

i take it there's no equivalent to the fortitude stat from dragon age 2.

The Champion's Walking Fortress enables knockdown defense, as long as it is activated while you're still standing up. If you don't have the champion spec, you can get a fade-touched dawnstone masterwork to randomly proc Walking Fortress, although it is far less convenient.

hmmm, i've been running templar but i'd consider changing.

the 30 second cooldown makes me a bit wary, but maybe combined with payback strike and the masterwork, i might have enough to work with.

Another thing you can do is use the charging bull skill to charge past the enemy shield chargers. This appears to confuse them quite a bit.

The masterwork works better than it appears. When you use charging bull, you hit a lot of enemies at once and have a good chance to proc.

Also, enemy shield chargers are mostly a problem in early to mid game. By late game, and shield chargers become less of an issue because everything dies quickly if you have a good dps build on your companions.

Worth noting about Payback Strike: it's cooldown only triggers if you actually hit an enemy. If you use it to get up, but for whatever reason don't actually hit an enemy, it will still be available for use.

Of course, if you want something that is going to be available when you need it, then Combat Roll is the better option, given it's 2 second cooldown. The drawback is that, because it's ability to get you back up comes from a specific upgrade, it is a purely defensive ability. Payback Strike has a longer cooldown, but it can be used offensively when you don't need it's knockdown recovery.

Finally, I wouldn't change to Champion just so you can use Walking Fortress to prevent knockdown. First off, I don't think that alone is enough of a reason for it. Second, you have two options already available to recover from it. Prevention is nice, but requires that you be ready to activate the ability beforehand, and spending time pacing your attacks so you can activate Walking Fortress in time is going to lower your damage output. I'd personally rather take the knockdown, then get right back up, myself.

i'm not too worried about damage output, i've already beaten the game on nightmare, i'm running nightmare with no mages right now and doing fine, so i'd prefer to focus on eliminating nuisances, and controlling the flow of the game, there are enough awkward things that i can do nothing about, like terrain jank and so on, that i'd sooner deal with things i can.

plus this is kind of what i enjoy about mid-game, trying different builds out.

i'm playing with cassandra alongside me, and i've got friendly fire turned on, which really gimps the the double templar assault - i can't use Wrath of Heaven a lot of the time, as it stuns friendly units, likewise i can't spec the dispel shatter at all, unless i want to change to three back rankers, which i might do later, but not right now. As i'm hitting both War Cry and Livid at the start of a fight, hitting a third buff in blessed blades is too time consuming, so that's her job anyway, and having a double dispel on the rifts is maybe a bit overkill, gonna want some drops after all.

oh, so i just realized i can't change specialization anyway? goddamn it. i wanted to try that out.

looks like its the masterwork for me, and payback strike, and combat roll, and friendly fire gets turned off.

If you want to take it to the extreme, you can also add the fade cloak masterwork (fade touched royale sea silk), so you'd have both fade cloak and walking fortress. I call it the invulnerability combo.

after trying a few things i've found that the upgraded combat roll on its own is a satisfying solution, time it right and you can avoid being hit, or recover quickly if you don't see it coming. the 2 second cooldown is ace, and it's useful in plenty of other situations. worth the points.

I'm also pretty sure the damage upgrade still removes knockdown, while also doing damage. It just doesn't remove status effects like chilled, shocked or burning.
