I have some of my protags in various world states chosen by theme (all mages, Warrior-Mage-Rogue, Anti-Qunari/Orlesian, etc.)

Hmm... My Canon HoF (as of the Keep) was a human noble rogue, my Champion of Kirkwall was a human mage and now I've decided that my 4th PT protag, a dalish elf, will be Solas' opponent in DA4 (if *that* ever materializes); I find there's a pleasant symmetry in having a modern elf as an adversary to that treacherous elvhen relic. Call it poetic justice. And he's a masterful hunter who favors bows.

Human Noble Warrior (Sword & Shield), Queen of Ferelden
Human Mage Spirit Healer, Champion of Kirkwall (female, Romancing Anders)
Qunari Rift Mage, Inquisitor (Female, Romancing Iron Bull, Both Vashoth)

Hawke is male mage
IQ is human female, toss up between the three classes honestly. I like her as a Mage to have a personal connection to the Conclave and for romancing Cullen, but any of the classes work for me. I don't feel as strongly about the class in DAI as I do the other games. Not too bothered about making sure all three classes are represented in all three games

I still don't have a mage protagonist in my 'canon' world state - the Warden was an archer rogue, Hawke a two-handed warrior and the Inquisitor a dual-dagger rogue. Vaguely planning to play a mage in DA4, although I may change my mind and play another dwarf. (Assuming DA4 exists and has mages and/or dwarves.)
I do try to make sure that Thedas isn't being saved by the same class all the time - the other world states I've played through Inquisition with are warrior/rogue/mage, mage/mage/warrior and rogue/mage/mage.

Yes, I kept the characters varied:
Hero of Ferelden is Syaries Tabris, a dual-wielding city elven rogue who romanced Alistair and was skilled in stealth and picking pockets.
Percival Hawke is a blood mage with a penchant for sarcasm and romanced Merrill and sided with the mages at almost every opportunity.
Darius Cadash is a stern sword-and-shield dwarven warrior who was a staunch believer in the Stone and the templars, learning that as his prestige class while romancing Cassandra.

Brendan Cousland(Sword and shields), Married Anora out a sense of duty, while romancing Morrigan. Morrigan is his mistress.
A Unknown Named Male Hawke (Bow and arrow), Romance Merill, rivalmanced her and was aggressive. He's dead, killed him over my single Warden Alistair
Artemis Lavellen (Mage), romanced Cassandra while believing in no gods. An aesthic and a practical leader, he cares somewhat for Elven culture, just not enough to respect the sentienals trials who he believed unimportant compared to the task at hand.

CoK-Male mage
HoC-Femquari worrior
Why? I make a rule to switch main character gender from the differ from the last one I've played. My next PC is going to be a male dwarf. I also like playing the unlikely hero with da.

I favour elves all the way
HoF Mage with 4 specialisation .. Arcane Warrior, Spirit Healer, Battle Mage and Shape Shifter
(obviously not an elf) Champion was a female spirit healer and force mage (but she got left in fade for Alistair and Stroud)
Dalish Knight Enchanter DAI
DA4 ? Dual Wield Rogue .. Legionaire Scout (Lavellan clan member???) or a dwarven rogue same specialisation

I picked them all to be the 3 different classes just in case they would all be together at some point.
Warden is always a mage so that he's related to Hawke, who's a rogue. And the Inquisitor is a warrior. I saw my Inquisitor as a leader of a grand army, and I figured the warrior class would fit that role best.

I chose to make my first inquisitor a rogue purely because my first warden was a warrior and my first hawke was a mage, so it just seemed fair. They are also all different races, but that is largely coincidental, I had to have human in DA2, City elf was the origin that most gripped my imagination in the lead up to DAO, and I went dwarf in DAI because the dwarven origins were amongst my favourate.
My first DA4 protagonist will be a warrior because why not keep the cycle going?

The Templar-Prince Consort, the Dead Hawke, and Mr. Lavellen,
It'll be a Male Rogue Dwarf, who falls for a woman with black hair.
The Snarky Mage, the other dead Hawke, and Not-really there Aurora,
It'll be a Female Human Warrior. Falls for a male (preferable a rogue)
The Smirking Cousland, the Alive one, The Super Mage,
It'll be a Male Human Warrior. Not sure yet,
The Dwarf Noble, Hawke, The Queen of Dwarfs,
It'll be a elven female rogue. Not sure yet.

Not I. all human female mages. DA is pretty much the only game I prefer mages over rogues. Not sure why.
As for reasons? I like playing mages, and struggle to play male characters (it's a personal thing). For all humans, never really was a fan of dwarves (or Qunari) and I have a few elf characters running around but I never got attached to them. Only big difference is looks and specialisations.

I'm curious if anyone else purposely made sure that the first trio of Dragon Age protagonists would be diverse in their classes. What did you decide and why?
You bet I did. I don't know if it was intentional, but it worked out that way naturally and I also did want to have different classes anyway. So it was both.
I went with the human origin first, which of course precludes the mage class. But that's fine because I wanted to play as a warrior anyway, and I guess I saw humans as the most relatable. I was just learning about the series, so I figured starting as a human was best so I didn't have to learn elven or dwarven customs as well as the gameplay, and plus the game seemed to be set up so that humans were most relevant. At the time I felt that the mage class was the "everyone plays as a mage" thing, though I was not involved with the Dragon Age community at all. Only my two friends had played it. But yeah, I wanted to play as a male warrior anyway, and who better than a Cousland for that purpose? So I did, and I made him dual weapon and 2H. He eventually became King, which was also great especially since he felt no chemistry with Morrigan or Leliana. Anora was perfect for him. I was completely satisfied with my decisions for this character, and it's why I want the Hero to return as playable in the future.
With DA2 one of my friends played it first, and said it sucked. He gave me the game and the player's guide before he even got through the Deep Roads. So I had some meta-knowledge of this game. So I made my canon Hawke a default female rogue archer. I suspected that since BioWare was not giving us our own character, it would end with the character not amounting to much, or at least not as much as the Hero of Ferelden. So I chose rogue and archer because that is typically the weaker and less violent class. This rogue would have to be quick and evasive in order to survive. That would fit the personality of not being a capable leader in most cases. I also picked a female Hawke because I believe that women are much easier to sympathize with when it comes to failure. You feel bad for the woman and you respect that she tried. With guys who fail, it's like, pfft, what a loser. Take a hike. I made her diplomatic and nice with some joking and playing now and then. I am completely satisfied with these choices as well, because I think her relationship with Bethany is much better than having the whiner Carver alive. It's better for him to die heroically helping us escape Darkspawn than to have him tagging along and feeling inferior to his older sister for no reason at all. Also, my F!Champion romanced Sebastian, another rogue archer and ruler of another state. Seemed fitting.
Finally came Inquisition. I had planned to romance Cassandra, assuming everything worked out with her. And I also knew that the character would be the leader of the Inquisition eventually. So I decided on a human male who is a few years older than Cassandra, as that's the only kind or romance that would make sense to me. I went with mage because I did have that natural feeling of playing as the class I did not have as part of my triumvirate, but also because I suspected the mage class would be the most relevant to the storyline as well as Cass' romance. And I was correct on both predictions. The mage bearing the mark, becoming a Rift Mage, romancing Cass whose only other romance was another male human mage, as well as all the storyline options such as referring to magic or invoking tranquility, and especially the fact that the world needed a mage who would stand for what was right to counter the storyline of Anders and the stigma of magic, it all worked out perfectly.
And so now I have a male warrior, a female rogue, and a male mage. All human, because humans are the most relevant. But while my Cousland and Hawke are white (the Cousland is somewhat tanned), my Inquisitor is brown-skinned, like someone from India. Total coincidence that Dorian is a similar (if not the same) skin color and says they are distantly related. Total accident. But I have had tremendous luck in making protagonists for these games in that their personalities, histories, or features all match the in-game facts.
I'm all ready for DA4's new class.

I have completed all three games as all three classes, but my favorites are all human mages. In DAO and DAI, they were female, but my favorite Hawke was male.

Nope, no diversity in all three for me. They're all the same - female human warriors.
The only thing I did do is to start a different race protag for DAO to get an idea of their beginnings but I never continued once they reached Ostagar.

Not a huge amount of diversity in canon characters from me either.
DA:O Human Female Archer
DA2 Started out as Female Archer, later changed to Female Mage
DA:I Started out as Human Female Archer, later changed to Elf Female Mage

Mmmh not quite.
HoF -> Human female 2h Rogue
Hawke -> 2h Rogue
Inquisitor.. Lavellan is canon and she is a rift mage.
However I also have a f!Trevelyan who is.. guess what? 2h rogue!
I just like rogues too much! Found mage ok but a bit slow, and warrior boring for dunno what reason!!

In my canon playthrough they are all different classes (all humans), not really purposely but because it was more fitting for the characters I had planned (headcanon wise).
HoF: Double wield warrior.
Hawke: Double wield rogue.
Inquisitor: Mage.

Hawke - Female rogue or war, though I like the champion's warrior armor better.
Inquisitor - Male Dalish rogue.
