All pieces of crap?? First Zathrian, now Solas?? Cmon. I'm glad they're kind aren't immortal any longer. I'll fight Solas to the bone to stop him in DA4.

Well, Zathrien was a pretty crappy guy. No doubt a really nice guy way back when, but constantly cursing humans with lycanthropy and getting his people killed along the way for perpetual vengeance against people long dead doesn't really earn him the benevolence merit badge.

On the other hand, the curse that he put on the original humans was more than amply earned.  Even the werewolves themselves agree there.  What was done to his son and daughter goes beyond horrific, and it's no surprise at all that he concocted the worst punishment he could think of and let vengeance take it from there.  That doesn't excuse his actions, but it sure makes them understandable.

The bigger question is: Why are most elves crazy?

Look at Merrill, what a nut job.

Then you got that crazy elf ****** from Awakening. True, she was mislead but, man, that elf chick has some major PMS going on.

You mean, why are most elven MAGES crazy?  Possibly because their people have been oppressed for millenia and now they hate everyone?

But, yeah, not a good track record with elven mages.  Velanna, Orsino, Merrill, Zathrien, Solas . . . even Fiona thought it'd be a good idea to ally with a Tevinter Magister.  Oh, and she started the mage rebellion.  Marethari wasn't bad but then she had to go and let herself be possessed . . .

Felessan was apparently working for Solas . . .

Next elven mage needs to be a Tevinter sympathizer or something.  No, wait, I take that back.  Next game I want them to have a mage who is pretending not to be a mage.  Just a total fake-out.  Either an adviser type so it's not obvious or even make them a fake rogue or warrior until you do their personal quest.  Mage-in-the-closet would be interesting and something they haven't done yet.

Everytime I hear Fiona say, "I started the Mage Rebellion." I wanna slap her and say,

"Uh no sweetie. Anders did that and Hakwe helped (well my Hawke did at least). You only continued it. Not start it. There is a difference. "

Yeah, I get it they are oppressed and all that (points to Solas) blame him and hell the Vints while there at it. At least Meratheri (sp) was a sweet not crazy elven mage.

I never thought Merrill was a 'nut job'.  Frankly I thought she was perhaps the only sane member of her clan.  Did she perhaps become too engrossed in trying to reconstruct the mystery of the Elluvians?  Sure, but quite honestly the LACK of such interest by her keeper was nothing short of shocking.  In any event while Merrill was sweet (perhaps too sweet), she was by no means a 'nut job'.  She understood the risks she was taking but felt that recovering part of her people's history was worth the risk.  Frankly given the possibilities this magic opens up, I am not sure I disagree.

Uh, no just no.

You do recall The Keeper trying desperately to stop Merrill? The same Keeper who sacrificed herself to save Merrill in the end. I don't view that as some one lacking sanity.

Merrill problem was she was far too wrapped up in saving what was long lost then what she had in the present. To try and get there she worked with a demon and used blood magic. At the cost of doing such, she was exiled, The Keeper died and the clan was in tatters. No matter how much Hawke or anyone else tried to tell Merrill this was wrong, she refused to listen.

So I feel as though someone like Merrill who chooses to dive into Blood Magic and tries to help a demon, yes they are insane. Why? Because any sane person would know that is wrong.

There was only a single lycanthropy curse Zathrian created that endured to 9:30 Dragon. He could not have been "constantly" cursing humans.

What the same keeper that fed herself to a demon?!  Yeah there was a nut-job in Merrill's clan, but Merill wasn't the nut.  Enough said.

Edit PS:  Also Merrill didn't "dive into blood magic" and "try to help a demon".  She only used blood magic because the Keeper wouldn't help her, and she didn't have enough Lyrium.  Merrill doesn't even know the sacrificial parts of blood magic.  As for demons, Merrill is always very clear that Spirits are not your friends and are foreign.  She shows far more understanding and restraint with demons and spirits than say.....Anders.

My elf warden makes Velanna a Grey.. He sees a powerful mage.

While my warden hates killing his kind he will do it.

Fiona.. Mother of the King of Ferelden. Poor Alistair thinks his mother was a common servant woman.

Zathrian gets his just reward.. I wanted to run a sword through  his middle but, couldn't due to the game's story line...

I don't really like elves, despised Solas and the Thalmor in Skyrim. But I do want to see more elves like Zevran, Legolas and Tauriel.

I think it has more to do with mages... I believe this is what WOULD happen if people had magic.  You get into a bad mood... and there's nothing stopping you from meeting out your own brand of justice.  This form of freedom is the worst... and I distrust anyone who claims that "they" would be the responsible one.

But the ancient elves... including Solas (perhaps especially Solas) - were diabolical speciests who hunted humans, killed Titans, slaughtered dwarves AND I believe we're discovering that they created the darkspawn.

Modern elves are just embittered cause-heads that are too busy looking backward to forge ahead.

Actually the mage rebellion was mostly contained to Kirkwall until Fiona led the mages to break away from the Chantry over a year later.  Anders' actions only created the sitatution - Fiona started the rebellion.

Part of it is because the games so far have really focused on elven history. Part of it is because Dragon Age is all about challenging if you will still feel sympathy for someone who did horrible things in response to horrible things (Orsino, Solas, and Zathrian all fall into that trope). The mage stick also smacks Elves a lot as well, as that whole thing seems to become "with great power, comes great responsibility!!!!!!!!!!!" stuff, so you get figures like Merrill, Merethari, Velanna, Fiona, who can easily make mistakes that affect lots of people because they are mages, and mages are powerfully dangerous.

Buuuut, I think this is going to affect every race on Thedas from here on out, or at least I hope so. As much as I enjoyed, from a story telling perspective, all the revelations about Elves, I'd rather learn that every terrible thing on Thedas does not stem from "Ancietn Elves were terrible" because that's kind of lazy storytelling.

In DA4 I'm fully expecting some mage mobs to charge at us laughing maniacally while shouting "Oh, what a day! What a lovely day!"

Yeah, but they were constantly turning other humans into werewolves.  Centuries past when the original killers would be dead themselves.

And he refused to lift the curse, even knowing what it was doing to innocent humans.  Even innocent elves of his own clan.

And thats the part where the Player comes in and persuades him of the error of his ways.

If by "convince" you mean "stab him until he agrees" then yes  :P
