So I just got through checking out COD black ops 3 and I have to say the graphics and particularly the facial and body animations are awesome... should we be expecting this level of realism from MEA?

Not just COD but infamous second son, la noire, last of us and many more all have really great facial animation... So can we expect this especially as MEA is going for immersion?

CoD has CG cutscenes... And they utilize mocap for them, something BW never does... So no.

BF4 will be the upper-limit of what BW can accomplish with ME:A, but they won't reach it. They butchered the engine when making DA:I, and they'll likely have to do the same for ME:A. Character creation precludes high-fidelity facial animations.

RPG's themselves don't lend themselves well to "acting". With a game like CoD, the main exposition and storytelling is delivered during these cutscenes, so there's incentive to make them as cinematic as possible. That's not the case with RPG's where everything is done via interactive "conversations".

BioWare is using a motion capture studio for ME:A. How extensively they'll be using mocap is anyone's guess, but they are using it nonetheless.

They won't use it as well as a game that actually has a persons face. The reason BO3 looks so good is because they did everything possible to copy and paste a real life Meloni into the game. Not some uncanny-valley-CC-creation.

Fair enough. I'm not really concerned about the entire game looking super photorealistic. I'd gladly trade it for custom options. But at least with the mocap maybe some of the silly animation issues that has plagued these games will be [mostly] corrected.

LA Noire NEEDED that quality of facial animation because it's a detective game. you need to be able to read a person-of-interest's reaction. COD games don't require it.

Photo-realistic faces would be a detriment to the immersion because the aliens would look weird and clash with the fidelity. Look at the trailer for the Warcraft movie.

There are far better examples than Warcraft, though. Just look at WETA Digital's work in LOTR, namely Gollum, the prawns of District 9 and Avatar.

One could say that we already got photorealism. Just ask Tali...

Maybe on pc. Forget it on xbone or ps4 - well not unless you are happy with something not running quicker than 5fps.

Honestly Xbox One is IMHO superior to most basic PCs in terms of quality of graphics and FPS. It's only high-end expensive gaming rigs that you can see any difference and even then it's not that much of improvement.

Xbox One is lower specced than my 6 year old desktop.... I'm not sure it's actually possible to buy a new PC, even a bottom end one, that's as bad as an Xbox One from a technical perspective.

Still - your delusions are amusing.

Yeah sure, and then everyone will have to buy GTX 980 to run game at least on medium option smoothly :D.

I realy don´t get people of these days, people ****** about weak graphics - so that developers have to make them freaking strong  - then the people ****** about games being OP. But what seems one of the problems is that developers have a problems with optimalization, last AAA title that I can realy praise for it´s great optimalization is Metal Gear Solid V, but DA:I or Fallout 4, eh dat madness...

I would rather run game on older engine, if the quality of story and mechanics was good enough, rather than rush with every new installment for upgrade of engine, which developers can´t handle and quite often are games at release messed up. The other thing is that how testers works, because atm after few major AAA releases in last years it looks to me, that they either sucks at testing or they do not test at all :D

I'm running TW3 on high graphics settings across the board (not Ultra) on an old GTX 760 ... a card that's 6 month's older than the XBox One and is still higher specced than the card that's in the console.

If Cyberstrike nTo had put forward his argument on the grounds of not having to deal with sh***y ports (Batman Arkham Knight for instance) then he'd have had a point... but arguing that the XBox One is technically superior ... not so much.

Yep. It's mainly poor ports that are the issue - not to mention things being frame rate locked etc. Of course if you just rum things at the much lower resolutions that the consoles are at then even that's not an issue.

The gulf is only going to get bigger in the next few years too.

Even if Witcher 3 is very demmanding game, I don´t think that with your 760 could easily match to some photorealistic game, well only if engine was well balanced - but that´s some utopia :D. We are atleast few years if not decade from photorealism being used in games as a standard, atm I don´t think that you could enjoy photorealism due to hardware and software limitation. The other issue as I mentioned is optimalization, and thanks to this generation of consoles we won´t reach photorealism either, we may get on the edge, but I don´t believe that we´ll achieve it yet.

Atm I have a dilema, if I should next year save money for new computer or console. I don´t like an idea of buying console, but it seems that I will, because it could actualy save me some money, but then I am not like into buying a lot of games :X   :D

Photorealism with shiny surfaces and clay-like terrain. A regular Frostbite 3 game.

Actually having decent hi-res textures would be a start to be honest; along with functioning AA and multisampling etc without having to hack .ini's.

I want Star Wars Battlefront graphics. If they can get that crap to run 60fps on consoles and have the game look simply amazing, then Bioware has no excuse for not being able to do it as well, especially if its going to run at 30 fps

As much as that would be something I would want as well, Battlefront I don't think has nearly the same amount of characters and detailed animations that Mass Effect will.

I freely admit to being a fully paid-up member of the glorious PC gaming master race but... my honest, unbiased opinion is... it depends :)

The initial outlay on PC gaming is going to be higher ... you might recoup that in the long run with PC games generally being a bit cheaper and not having to fork out for an XBL/PS+ subscription ... but you'd have to buy a lot of games for PC gaming to really become cheaper than console gaming.

It also depends on what kind of games you like; for something like racing games you've got a choice of Forza (XBox), Gran Turismo (Playstation) or Project Cars (PC) - all of which are better on a big screen with a racing chair/wheel. So in all cases you'll want dedicated hardware in your living room. The most cost-effective option would be perhaps GT7 (when it's eventually released) on PS4.

However, I work on a PC, I need one anyway and I tend to play games like Pillars of Eternity, Divinity Original Sin, XCOM, Civ V ... and so on. Lots of strategy/RPG games that work well on PC (and often aren't available on consoles) with a smattering of FPS games (like TF2).... and I've got quite a lot of games, something like 130 all told I believe.

So it depends on what kind of games you like, the initial outlay, and how many games you're likely to buy. I'd guess you might be best off with a PS4 depending on platform exclusives.

I was happy with DAI's level of graphics. I'm more interested in the characters moving around in a more human way and not recycling the same basic gestures in conversations.

Not to mention how everyone just stands in place. If Bioware is going for exploration you simply can't make everything seem so static.
