Baldur's Gate is one of the few games that I enjoyed as a child and still love as an adult.  Since I've begun teaching with video games, I have become curious about the educational potential of Baldur's Gate.  So, when Edu-Gaming.com gave me the opportunity to write about BG from an educational viewpoint, I heartily accepted.

Check out my review below and let me know what you think in the comments!

I play Baldur's Gate with my 9 year old daughter sometimes. She loves reading the dialogue, and does indeed ask me what words mean when she doesn't know. Due to some of the adult themes in the game (especially BG 2 - Korgan talking about Aerie over his knee for example, which they can get that dialogue if both are in the group), it probably is a better game for children/parents, rather than a classroom. This way when/if adult themes come up, the parents can either explain, or defer the issue ("You'll understand when you are older.").

Thank you for bringing this perspective, Corey.  I would love to know about any other games you play with your child.  I truly believe that we need more parents like you (and as gamers age into parents, I think we will) who view video games as another activity for engagement and quality time.

I am especially curious to know how your 9 year old responded to Irenicus - was he too much, or was she entertained?

Wizardry 8 proved a bad idea to play with my (at the time) 9 year old... she enjoyed watching me play the game until in the swamp area there is a hostile unicorn critter called nightmares.

The sight of daddy bashing a horse-ie put me well and truly in her bad books!

I am indeed a gamer. I play Baldur's Gate, Magic: The Gathering, Uno, and once in a while chess with my 9 year old daughter. I play the same games with my 13-year old boy, as well as War Thunder (on-line multi-player war game) and Birth of the Federation (space video game, multi-player).

Irenicus was not too much at all, and she enjoyed beating him up. Currently our run is deep into Throne of Bhaal (she's a human cleric, while I am a gnomish fighter/thief). The Tree of Life fight with Irenicus was pretty funny - I had laid down snares/spike traps around him, and then when Irenicus finished talking they immediately went off - Irenicus then talks to my 9-year old, and then says "YOU killed me" - it was not my daughter that laid the traps, my character did, but was funny Irenicus talked and accused the wrong person. My daughter got a kick out of that.l

With the icon that you have, I didn't expect you to be a daddy. :D This is why people get confused when talking o web -friends. What you see is not always what you get. :)

I think that from mine, everyone is well aware that I'm an old fogie.

This gamer didn't age into a parent. He was a parent before he became a gamer. :)
