Idea for crafting system

So now having played a good part of TW3, and having seen some reviews of FO4 (a game I'm not interested in playing), I've had more thoughts about the role of crafting in modern RPGs. It seems to be such a buzzword for companies now, and it's a necessary element to compete with other AAA games.

I personally don't care much for crafting, and it seems like padding or collecting, which takes away from actual story and gameplay. A little can be enjoyable, but when there is an emphasis on crafting in order to get the best gear and it takes a significant amount of time hunting for schematics and materials, then find a crafting station capable of making the item, then finding out the item is too high-leveled for us to use anyway (I'm looking at you, TW3 grrr) then this aspect of the game takes on too much weight.

Since I doubt crafting will go away anytime soon, what I would prefer for DA4 is that we have this crafting system remain, but in a more streamlined and optional way. I know it's possible to complete the game without crafting, but the crafted gear is better than anything looted, and usually by the time a looted item is found it's underpowered for our level anyway. So better loot mechanics would be good, maybe with loot items having specific properties that are unobtainable in any schematics we find. E.g. that stick the mabari finds in Trespasser which hits with bees was cool and unusual. Not the most powerful weapon by this point in the game, but distinctive. Then later we find a schematic to add bees, so we can make a better weapon with this quality. It would be better if the bee quality is not found in schematics at all, but we have to use the found weapon if we want that quality.

A second point would be to reintroduce the old crafting system. That is, the Wade and Herren/Cespenar and Cromwell system. Have some very powerful equipment that an expert can craft once we find the forumla or ingredients for it. Much simplified than having us come up with 30 pieces of ingredients from 5 different sources and hunt down the schematic and perform some quest for the crafter before they can put everything together.

So those are my basic thoughts on improving and streamlining the crafting system, if it's going to remain.

The crafting in TW3 is pretty bad. It has all of DAI's weaknesses, and none of its strengths, and the endgame is essentially four different crafted sets, which stand head and shoulders above every other piece of gear in the game (and of those four sets, two of them are goofy looking).

As always, I think they should redesign DAI's crafting in such a way that the strength of a given item is solely reliant on the tier of the materials. There's no reason to have both tiered schematics and tiered materials, and removing tiers on the schematics would allow for more diversity in appearance, since you wouldn't necessarily be hurting yourself if you prefer an early game look. And of course, to keep the tinting station.

I would prefer that a protagonist or companion be allowed to have a blacksmithing skill. The more levels in the skill the character is able to work with better tiered materials. I would remove the tier level on the schematics. I would have a Wade and Herrn for gamers who choose not to invest one of their characters in the blacksmithing skill.  They could pay Herren to gather the materials (tier 1 to 3)  and Wade to do the work unless it involved masterworks (fade touched items etc),  very high tier materials or unique items then the party would have to find them. Those investing in blacksmith skill would have to gain levels to work with those materials.

I agree with everything except this. Saying this because I actually do really like the crafting system itself. It would be pretty much perfect if this was a game with one character but it's not. There's 10 freaking people to worry about. Which makes it really annoying and time consuming. I just think it needs to be simplified a bit.

Also I do really really ****** hate that looted gear is always worse the crafted gear. As a loot addict, it annoys me so much that I can never get anything good by looting it. Actually fallout 4 has these special enemies and the gear they drop will have a special mod on it that you can't craft at all. It's kinda nice.

Oh, I am so relieved to hear I am not the only one... Thank you!!!

I can't add anything to what's been said, since you all have such great ideas already.

I really would love having Wade and Herren back, too :D

I love crafting, but I can't stress enough how tiresome, and time consuming, I feel it is with the crafting as it is in DAI. I've even fallen asleep - several times - while doing it.

edit: I haven't played the Fallout games, nor The Witcher, but I do love Skyrim and its crafting. I liked DAO and ME1, too, but the crafting itself was ...sort of missing, so to speak.

Since this would fit perfectly with one of my OCs (he's a paladin type, but would much rather be crafting than fighting) as well as add some realism to crafting in general, I highly approve of this.
