The USA trained and supplied them originally
Whether or not we are still training and supplying them is the topic of conspiracy theory.
I love the idea of America, but it is not working as intended. Someone needs to press our reset button.
America has to take a lot of heat but we are no better in Europe. We just sit with our thumbs up our asses and do nothing because we can't agree on anything.
Afghanistan was a pile of rubble when the Soviet Union left. Half the surviving population were teenagers or younger. Saddam had a million troops under his command after the war with Iran. Syria has been a hotbed for years - the number of people fleeing the country is beyond counting.
It may seem like a cheap shot to look at these events in hindsight and I don't have a spacemagic solution to remove all the things that are f*cked up in this world. It's purely subjective but I just think doing nothing is the worst you can do.
If anyone wants to find out more about US involvement in Afghanistan and feel the subject is too complex/TL;DR I recommend this movie. It's a dramatization and should be perceived as such, but it might spark an interest in finding out more about the workings of global politics.
