The French and Spanish supplied the Americans originally, which is why they are responsibe for the Korean War.

You're talking a 200 year difference.  I'm talking some of the very same individuals, such as Osama bin Laden for example.  Don't try to turn this topic into an argument, and moreso, don't try to argue with me.  You will lose.

35 years is a long time in a part of the world where alliances shift quickly, and I'm not sure that most of the folks repelling the old Soviet invasion would be willing to engage in the sort of civilian slaughter Paris saw yesterday. America has its fingerprints on plenty of proxy wars, and plenty of other countries have made a ltitle extra off of them as well. But the mindset that's creating these incidents belongs exclusively to those who hold it.

Let's not argue amongst ourselves. Now is the time to show solidarity with our friends. Words are little comfort at a time like this, but from Boston to Paris I send my heartfelt condolences.

I too want to express my solidarity with my French neighbours. We are all concerned. Marksmad and I are in Berlin for the weekend and were very moved to see all the flags here flying at half mast in a gesture of unity and solidarity.
On pense à vous. On est tous avec vous. Et même pas peur.

The USA trained and supplied them originally

Whether or not we are still training and supplying them is the topic of conspiracy theory.

I love the idea of America, but it is not working as intended.  Someone needs to press our reset button.

America has to take a lot of heat but we are no better in Europe. We just sit with our thumbs up our asses and do nothing because we can't agree on anything.

Afghanistan was a pile of rubble when the Soviet Union left. Half the surviving population were teenagers or younger. Saddam had a million troops under his command after the war with Iran. Syria has been a hotbed for years - the number of people fleeing the country is beyond counting.

It may seem like a cheap shot to look at these events in hindsight and I don't have a spacemagic solution to remove all the things that are f*cked up in this world. It's purely subjective but I just think doing nothing is the worst you can do.

If anyone wants to find out more about US involvement in Afghanistan and feel the subject is too complex/TL;DR I recommend this movie. It's a dramatization and should be perceived as such, but it might spark an interest in finding out more about the workings of global politics.

That goes for both of us. And I'm relieved to hear that our Parisian friends on this forum are safe and well.

On vous souhaite bon courage.

Guys, I know I'm asking a lot, cause troublesome and stressful times have a way of sparkling debates even among the most accepting people around.

But I would really like to ask you to keep discussions and arguments, of any kind, out of this thread.

It was made with the intention of sharing love and checking out the situation of anyone who was struck by the attacks and is on here. Nothing less, and nothing more.

I'd appreciate if it could stay that way. Again, I know it's not easy. But please... Try.

My thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the people in Paris, especially the victims and their families. Speaking as one of the 1.6 billion peaceful Muslims in the world, I'm horrified and disgusted that the cowards in ISIS commit such atrocities under the guise of Islam. There is nothing in Islam's teachings or its message that would excuse or condone something so inhumanly barbarous.

My prayers and thoughts are with the people in Paris during this unfortunate situation. People committing such atrocities in the name of religion are cowards and are scum on the face of the earth - no religion condones these sort of actions.

I hope that the Parisians stand together during this trying period and come out of this even stronger than before.

I am glad to hear that the French posters here are safe.

Agreed their very actions contradict the teachings of Islam. These people are not muslim despite what they claim. The sooner ISIS, Al Qaeda and these various other cowardly organisations are destroyed the better.
