I think if we were to establish a settlement, I would like to have the ability to build our own citadel. Kinda like a more fleshed out version of Castle building in DAI. I would be a lot more fun to recruit members into the citadel like doctors, merchants, soldiers, farmers from around the new galaxy, maybe establish a place for refugees. I see could myself spending a lot of time playing around with it.

If so, I hope a LOT more upgrades than in DAI. Seriously.

I wonder if we could play as a racist and only allow Turians or humans establishment or something.

Could be a cool feature. They could do it like a more fleshed out version of how you build the homestead in Assassin's Creed 3. That was the best part of that game for me.

I really hope we don't have this feature. I don't want to be putting down roots anywhere. I want to explore this new frontier. I want to planet hop from system to system, cluster to cluster.

Maybe just explore a planet that can be colonized. Once a spot is found, inform whoever of the location, then move on to another planet that can be colonized

If it happens in the background while we're playing the rest of the game, sure. Similar to DA:I's war table operations but with more interaction, like maybe we get called back there occasionally to deal with an emergency.

Perhaps we could go back on our own and hang out, trade with merchants, have interactions with the crew or colonists, like returning to the Citadel. I'd be okay with that.

Agreed. I live on my ship, as a military commander. I won't any have time to settle down and smell the roses, so to speak.

However, this might work for something like, end game content, after the war is won. Still, I wouldn't see myself spending much time there unless I could grow or create resources (that can't be obtained any other way) that I can then use to fight in new game plus or multiplayer.

I've usually found base building and management to be a tiresome gimmick that ends up being just another way to break every game's economy. It was novel back in the days of Assassin's Creed II, but after what seems like a millennium of Ubisoft games and derivative works, the power fantasy is about as meaningless as the listless stream of buzzwords that flow through the teeth of executives at E3. Call me crazy, but these systems lack any sort of soul or mechanical stimulation. There need to be decisions, and I'm not talking about decisions like: "do you want to build a hospital or a barracks?" that amount to minor cosmetic changes or flavor text. Without legitimate challenges or logistical quandaries, there's no substance there: I press a button and get some cash and a metal fortress planted somewhere in a box canyon in the corner of the galaxy is now painted blue. I get it, people like the power fantasy, but why is everyone clamoring for the same old mini-game?

I'm also not a big fan of becoming Mayor of the Universe: somehow managing to explore and shoot up every bit of the known universe and micromanage an empire spanning light years. It just seems unreasonable that a supposedly intelligent future society would entrust managerial duties to someone who may be subject all kinds of horrific death and injury at the hands of a frightful, unknown frontier. It's already an idiotic that the captain and 2 other members of the senior staff frequently leave the ship to get shot at. Suspending my disbelief any further is difficult.

More importantly, why can't BioWare just make a good game about being a star ship captain? No gimmicks, no galactic advisors nudging me to plant flags on virgin soil, no elfroot. Just space, shooting, and a hearty crew. Is it so much to ask the BIoWare make a game. Not two or three decent enough games smushed together and stuffed into a sack labeled "content," but one, single, good game.

I'll be honest: I care far too much about something that is basically optional (and I do mean basically; there always manages to be an-at the very least-tacit obligation for the player to engage in the managerial aspects of these games), but I am quite annoyed that this gimmick hasn't evolved in any meaningful capacity since it's debut in the AAA industry despite becoming exponentially more pervasive.

I had a feeling this thread was inspired by a certain gameplay element I've heard about in the new Fallout.

I haven't waited Fallout 4 to think about colonies in the ME universe. At the moment I heard about Andromeda, it was clear : we will have to build colonies.

If you don't build colonies, you will have the same problem the Quarian faced : birth control, plagues, some mental issues (Xen, I am looking at you!). So you will have to settle down at one or several places.

If you stay in the Ark, plunder the planets, leave your garbage behind, rip everything you can from each world before going to the another, it will not be ME:A but Space Gipsies : The Simulator.

There will probably be more than one colony. Would love to have one main home colony though, the most hospitable one for growing a new civilisation with support mining outposts and military outposts. Perhaps with the Ark providing defence and support from orbit as you expand on the planet below.

I have a feeling the ARK will remain the centre of government for the Milkyway species for quite a while.

But I would welcome building a personal settlement on the main planet. Ferhaps feed it with Resources captured in multiplayer from raiding hostile species or as rewards for aiding in the defence of friendly species...

I guess it depends on when the game is set. At or near arrival yeah we build colonies. Whether it's detailed or you just plant a flag I don't know but either works for me. If the game starts a couple hundred years after we arrive then colony building is not needed.

Might still be a good idea for continued exploration of the new galaxy. to have a base of operations.

Unless ofcourse you can setup a direct jumpgate/relay to and from the milkyway.. That way you wouldn't need a lot besides perhaps a few lab modules, supply stores and such.

If you want to expand into a new galaxy with new opportunities then you establish collonies.

My theory is early to the Galaxy yes we set up a base of operations and colonies. Been there a while the colonies and base of operations are already there.

I don't want them to add it if they aren't going to commit to it.

I don't want it to be: "that feature you can just ignore if you want".

Well, I'm sure you're aware the entire concept is optional in Fallout 4.

Also - it would be totally great to find your baby son and wife/husband in a wasteland and have no home after you did.  No established foods supply - no shelter - no safety.  So, just you and your kid and the wasteland.  No - the base building makes sense in the narrative - you're looking for your son in the former United States of America... even the idea that you're going to ask for the first Wastelander you find and then beeline to him and live happily ever after with people giving you food and supplies... is quite a measure more preposterous than building a life WHILE looking for your family.

Concerning ME:A - if they do it, I want it to be FAR more like Fallout 4 than DA:I.  I don't want base building to be an afterthought... I want it to be an important, integrated piece of the game (or, I suppose allow you to hand it off to your "Second" to just do it for you).

In that case, Warhammer 40k would be your game.

About ME:A, I seriously hope they won't make start the story centuries after the arrival. It would be just like the previous ME but with a new map skin. I won't have any feeling of discoveries if all the avaible planets would be probed and tested before we see them.

Probably just arrived or there for a year or two is the most likely scenario.

As for colony building, i'm all for it. The question is do we want total freedom like Fallout 4, which is very hit or miss, or would it be some pre-fab "types" that we can make, like buildings or settlements (mini-Sim City basically.)

I would prefer it to be a bit liek Fallout 4, especially in regard to food supply and maybe oxygen supply that we have to find sources of these things. It allows us to customize the place, and we could gain some sort of benefits based on the colony we created, maybe a source of credit or some weapons or armors.

Have to say i'm very much enjoying the settlement building feature of fallout 4(albeit i'm still in the early stages of the game)

So i certainly wouldn't be completely against there being something similar in MEA. If we are going to be exploring, establishing & protecting networks of settlements might well make sense.
