Just in case it helps, if ME wasn't your thing, you might give ME2 a shot and jump right in from there. ME2 is much more streamlined than the first ME (while I love it), deals with assembling a small team of interesting misfits who become like family, and the graphics and voice actors are terrific. It's one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had (along with DA:I).

Well done, they have had krogan heads in trophy rooms for the sp game and multiplayer but have not seen one on the floor like that.
