So in DA4 if a love interest warns you not to pursue a romance with them...

I'll probably romance them anyway.

That said, knowing what happened with every LI who warned you not to pursue them so far (Morrigan, Anders, Blackwall, Solas), I'll brace myself for the big reveal.

That said, it'd be funny if BioWare caught onto this trend and made an LI who constantly warned you not to pursue them, then the big reveal was that there is no big reveal. No nefarious secrets, no plans to leave, no world-changing ambitions. They just have low self esteem.

Well said. A better explanation for what I said previously.

These romances are the best kind so I would always go for it if I like the LI option. Unpredictable/Intriguing are better than stable and boring imo.

I'd get comfy under my blanket, make sure I have a box of tissues nearby, and happily click that heart icon :P

...will you still do it? Morrigan, Anders, Solas, and Blackwall all are very reluctant and it turns out for good reason. At the very least, if a character starts warning against a romance it's best to raise an eyebrow. They're likely hiding something.

Totally. Just to uncover their little secrets.

It will increase my suspicion and i will be more careful (i risked badly because of Morrigan,Solas and Anders lies and those of Blackwall were annoying),a feeling that ultimately proved right in DA franchise because all these characters had something to hide

Failed only with Merrill, she wasn't hiding anything ,she was simply shy in the romance.

Making deals with demons in DAO always ends with a child being turned into an abomination.

Making a deal with Torpor results in the Dream Stalker terrorizing Kirkwall, which the demon swore woukd never happen.

Making a deal with Imshael kills Michel.

So yeah, it might work out for the PC. But other people always get hurt.

I fail to see how Imshael killing Michel is a bad thing.

And to answer OP:  I'm gonna click that heart icon.

My canon romances have turned into larger and larger trainwrecks with each game.  It started with Alistair's 'we shouldn't do this because we're both Grey Wardens (and also I'm a prince and you're an elven mage)'.  Then it went onto Fenris' 'we shouldn't do this because I'm an escaped slave and I don't believe in letting myself be happy'.  Then I got Solas' 'we shouldn't do this because I want to tear down the Veil and there's a 99% chance this will destory the world but also I kind of love you and now I'm Super Confused.'

I'm kind of curious to see where my next DA romance takes me.

The heart (and the netherbits) wants what it wants.  Sometimes you just gotta go for the bad boy (or girl).  I think from a game play perspective it always makes the game more interesting when things are complicated and complex.  Mind you, I don't want any of that in my real life.  Which is perhaps why I go for the drama in my video games.

I think it was especially fitting for the Warden and Hawke to just hold on to anyone who was willing during the chaos of the Blight and the mess that is Kirkwall. Inquisitor is a bit more dubious, since all romances don't begin until after we're officially the IQ and technically everyone's boss. I think anyone who says "we shouldn't do this" has the added question of how much is the NPC uninterested but diplomatically trying to turn down their boss. (This obviously doesn't happen in game, as the PC is irresistible, but it could have been interesting)

Imagine poor Cullen playing along with a mage Trevelyan or Lavellan as PTSD flashbacks to his previous two jobs strip down his defenses. Imagine the fan rage!

You can use Michel if Imshael doesn't kill him. Imshael just gives you one reward and then that's it.

Worth it.

I'm not surprised that Michel didn't put up much of a fight against Imshael.  He only considers killing unarmed elves as part of a drunken celebration to be a challange, after all.

Because a bunch of worthless elven peasants, peasants who by the way are breaking a decades old curfew in few knowledge that it can end up killing them, are somehow worth consideration by a elite soldier? He did what he needed to do, graduated and never did it again, and in doing that became one of the most revered Chevaliers of the entire Empire.

Seriously, Cobbler or Special Forces Operative.

That fellow could do it for fun and I'd still not bat a eye due to utility.

Usefulness should matter more then criminals and petty morality.

Doesn't Fenris warn Hawke as well?

Probably, but I've forgotten. I didn't like him until he started speaking to the Arishok in his own language. I thought to myself "that elf is intelligent!" His sexy factor went up ten-fold.

Fenris pretty much had me with "Hello," or whatever was the first word out of his mouth. Dumped Anders in a heartbeat for that voice.

On topic...oh yes, must see the trainwreck for myself up close. I had to force myself to romance Anders on something like my 5th time thru DA2. Got Solas out of the way first off in DAI but unfortunately was a bit spoiled on the ending. Then romanced him again because....glutton for punishment?

Out of likes, but totally agreed.  I watch the fluffier, happy romances on YouTube.  But if I'm not personally experiencing that trainwreck, I'm not happy.  Or sad.  Or...something? :P

Hey, with this kind of thread, sometimes you can't tell.

To OP: the character I romance first time through a game is based purely on who I think is cutest  If there's a tie, then yes, one continuously saying "We shouldn't do this," "I'm no good" can be the deciding factor.

Oh, I hadn't considered the whole boss thing. I think the reason it doesn't come off that way in general is because of the Haven experience. Most of them knew you before you became Inquisitor, and you can head-canon that Haven takes quite a bit of time if you'd like, since nothing is stated. There is also the opportunity to flirt and such. Plus, with the way that some of the romances play out, like Dorian's, there is a feeling of initial friendship that evolves, especially if you did In Hushed Whispers. Or... that could just my my own head-canon heavily influencing my opinion.

But I do see your point, certainly.

Hah... I believe the first words out of Fenris's mouth were, "Your men are dead," to that Captain guy who carried out the ambush. XD

It will be nice playing a new game with some fresh faces. Since I'm a DAO mage player from way back, and my canon Warden is a fem mage, I went with Cullen as my first romance on my first play and it was all planned out. Mind, I wasn't a rabid Cullenite or anything, but I was curious after seeing him develop over two games.

With the next game, after seeing some of the initial: here is what the game is, where we will be, and so forth, I'm seriously considering dropping out of the forums and everything altogether. I would like to have known what my reaction would be if I went into the whole Dorian thing totally blind. As I said, I wouldn't have been disappointed because I planned on the Cullen romance for that play, but having that foreknowledge about a character isn't something you can un-know. So I don't know, for example, if I would have been like some reviewers I read who were totally bummed out when their crush came out during his quest.

Yeah, I love the voice. When I hear that voice of the anonymous legionnaire in Skyrim, I whisper, "Hey Fen, whatcha doin' in Tamriel?"

My motto has always been "Full steam ahead on the burning trainwreck."  And I'm sticking to it, even after Anders and Solas

The definition of insanity, yeah?

Only if you expect different results...

I did my absolute best to keep away from knowledge about Inquisition before I played the game, but still somehow I went in knowing every companion's name, romanceable status (and race-gating), and orientation. Don't ask me how that happened, because I seriously do not know. That didn't stop me from flirting with Dorian for fun. I love that guy to death.

I also romanced Cullen first, but that was the tie I mentioned in my previous post. It was between him and Blackwall, with me seriously leaning toward Blackwall and really only flirting with Cullen because he was so damned fun to fluster. The things he'd done in the previous two games made me want to completely ignore him, but... that, ahem, didn't happen. This is the one thing I will not forgive: Bioware, you made me like him. <shakes fist in the general direction of Canada>
