Can I allow Jowan to die in the cell and have Wynne or Alistair mention the mages in the tower for support. I played this game countless times and never did let Jowan die in the cell. I do the mage quest before Redcliffe so I was wondering if one of the two would mention the mages or does it just trigger if Jowan is present?

Blood magic is really creepy. I know the Wardens do it, but I always thought it was disgusting. Sure one of the best spells is blood wound but just creepy. I'm thinking of letting Jowan die in the cell, because he creeps me out. I still want to save the boy.

I found it.

"This can be done through the use of a blood magic ritual by sacrificing and using the life force of Arlessa Isolde (provided that Jowan is still around), or by using lyrium obtained by the Circle of Magi. The latter option, however, requires that the events of the Broken Circle be completed and the mages of the Circle are still alive. In both options, a mage enters the Fade in order to destroy the demon. The mage can be a magi Warden, Morrigan, Wynne, Jowan, or if the Circle option was used, First Enchanter Irving. If a magi Warden enters the Fade in order to rescue Connor, they can make a deal with the demon in order for it to return on a later date and possess Connor again, instead of destroying the demon."

I'm pretty sure nobody will get the idea unless Jowan suggests it.

Wynne or Morrigan will mention the Circle as an option, if they are in the party, if Jowan is not present, if the circle was not annulled, and if certain dialogue options are used by the player. IIRC, a PC mage can also suggest it.

Alistair and Teagan can both suggest going to the Circle mages instead of using Jowan's blood magic.

Nobody gets the idea to use Blood Magic unless Jowan suggests it. Alistair will suggest the Circle, though not very hopefully. I think Wynne also suggests the Tower. I don't think Morrigan does. (Morrigan not suggesting it and Alistair not sounding very hopeful all makes sense when you consider that, metagaming aside, leaving the demon unattended for as long as it takes to get to the Tower and back is an idea that could very easily backfire to the detriment of the people you're trying to protect.)

Edit: I do think I remember having the option to kill Jowan. If you do this, Blood Magic is out, but I think Alistair or Wynne can still recommend the really longshot way that winds up saving both Isolde and Connor.

The Warden will also have a dialogue option about it. All you need to do is save the mages, or tell Teagan and Isolde to wait for you to decide and then go to the Circle to save the mages.

Tell Jowan to go away when you see him. That will begin a wonderfully bugged quest. It's the only thing I ever do with Jowan now. He deserves to die, so naturally I set him free. My logic.

I just finished this portion of The Arl of Redcliffe, so I can confirm that there is an option to kill Jowan.  (More than one, IIRC, but the second one doesn't come until after you deal with the desire demon and the third won't come until after Sacred Ashes.)
