Romances between companions

It's true, some people don't like them. In cases where the romance check flags are bugged (I've heard reports that Varric and/or Cole may ask Blackwall about Josephine whether there's an active romance with Josephine or not, and Isabela and Fenris would always flirt regardless of either's romance status), I can understand the sentiment. And others don't like their favorites being available to others regardless of their romance status (I don't really understand this objection, but I've read it often enough to realize that it exists). But a lot of people really enjoy watching relationships develop among the followers. I do.

It's really frustrating when you're hoping one of those relationships will start and it won't. Maybe it's the infamous banter bug. Maybe it's the fact that my current character isn't romancing anyone this playthrough (I wanted to see all the Scout Harding flirtation, so that meant forsaking all others). But I can't seem to get Bull and Dorian to hook up no matter what I do, and it's driving me nuts. I love those two goofballs, and I want them to be happy!

If you're going to include romance between companions in future games, would you please allow players to give the budding romance a nudge? Slip a line into player-initiated dialogue along the lines of "Say, Dorian, what do you think of Iron Bull? I think you're adorable together." Something set a flag to initiate their romance, in other words.

Thanks for considering it.

PS: In a similar vein, I wouldn't mind if some characters are flirty with each other no matter who they're romancing. Sort of like how Iron Bull says provocative things to Cassandra even though he has no intention of romancing her. That's cute, too.

I second this motion - anything to avoid the situation where I wandered the Hissing Wastes for hours muttering 'will you two please just !@#$ already?!' to Bull and Dorian.

Sure, why not?

Consider what you're asking for, though. Just as some people want companions to get together if neither are with them, some people don't want them to get together with anyone else at all (even if they don't intend to romance either of them that playthrough). If the devs include the option for the PC to ship two companions, you know the dry-dockers are going to whine and cry that they should have the option to cockblock or break up the companions in the interest of "fairness."

I personally think those people need to pipe down, but I figured I'd mention it before someone else did.

Bull isn't cute. He's a dipshit.

I don't mind the idea though.. but how about not acting like the mullet headed jock you can't trust with your date, when you go inside to get a drink. True story, yo. :P There's a way to at least be cool about it and not be completely dumb about people's space.

The whole character is obviously written by people who don't experience it enough. He should stick to eggheads and weird little kids.

No. They should stand around pining for the PC and ONLY the PC.

but yeah they should expand on this more and develop these romances more along the lines of the actual ones.

Sometimes they don't deliver enough.. There are hints, but I would have liked to have seen Carver and Merrill hook up especially. Or, Sebastian and Bethany.

Oh, I know. As far as I'm concerned, if the protagonist isn't romancing a character, I'd like to see them hook up with someone else because there isn't enough love in the world, but I remember the rage over Fenris and Isabela quite vividly. I also remember reading about fans who insist that their real-life friends' characters avoid romancing Fenris out of jealousy. I wish I was making this up.

Allowing players to prohibit companion romances isn't quite the same thing as giving them a means to jump-start already-possible romances that are stalled by the banter bug or by their decision to leave their own characters single. In the latter case, the companions would eventually hook up, so all it's doing is giving the player the ability to override game bugs. The former case is... kinda creepy. But hey! It isn't my game. If players demand the ability to cockblock romances (and if it's a simple enough to implement), why not? I wouldn't ever use the feature if it were implemented, but the game already has features I don't use. All they're doing is depriving themselves of banter.

And Yes, Carver and Merrill should definitely have been a thing. Seriously. I ship them like FedEx.

I will forever headcanon that Carver and Merrill got together in the canceled Exalted Marches. Varric just doesn't go into detail about the relationship to the IQ because why would he to a complete stranger?

My last playthrough of the game I tried to have Dorian and Bull in the party as much as possible (don't care much for Bull so rarely had him in other playthroughs). Yet even playing through all zones and almost all quests, I never got the banter to the romance point between them. It really is frustrating, especially since there's no Keep option to set a flag for their romance, yet there is a Trespasser epilogue slide specifically for them. I'm assuming this won't be imported into DA4 at all since it's not in the Keep, but it's possible Bio will add more Keep choices before the next game comes out.

More to the OP, yes, I don't actually think I as the player am romancing the characters (except Kaidan  ) so I have no problem with romanceable characters not dying alone in a playthrough where I don't pursue them. It can even help provide more detail on them, as choice in romantic partner shows a lot about a person.

The idea makes me think of the fan made banter packs for BG2. There was a lot of PC input into conversations with companions in that.

Sigh.. if only.

I think David Gaider really laments that one. The expansion, I mean. I read that once. But I know he even wanted to write a comic with Bethany and Sebastian (and even Nathaniel) once. So probably the same with Merrill and Carver.

I heard about his desire for the Sebastian-Bethany comic. I was...less than interested at the idea. But would still probably read, because I'm a sucker like that. Who knows, maybe the comic would be able to breathe life into two of the dullest DA companions.
