I wouldn't have liked to be Guerrin to be honest. They are one manplative, messed up family they are. I hope that Connor isn't the same way. And I like the Couslands... They are bad arses, all of them.

What the hell does your family matter? Look at it as an opportunity to rise above them. Carve your own place in the world.

Don't let the human PC hating person here you say that.

Hey, no impugning of my friend. She doesn't hate the human PC, she hates the way their family is presented.

I was talking about about other human PC's such as Hawke, who are total fricken losers, btw. Unless I get told otherwise.

.

Then that means the Cousland PC did exactly that, am i right? They did exactly this.

On the topic of how the Couslands survive both Arland and Calanhan, I have a book about various methods historical figures have used to take power and examinations of them and two of those "rules" stand out. First is to make yourself so powerful that you can be removed like Bismarck in Prussia and Talleyrand in revolutional France. Both were either hated by their masters or in the case of Talleyrand even betrayed them but wielded that much power. The other, is to use defeated enemies. The book has a Byzantine emperor who gave a childhood friend power and was murdered by him later, whereas a Chinese emperor treated former enemies well and others were more willing to submit. In the origin you get the filtered version of the story, but maybe the lore has more to it. Sorry for the wall of text.

Dont you think Loghain had nothing better to do on his free-time than orchestrate a mass murder of random noble family all the way from Ostagar?

What the heck would he gain from that?

Bryce Cousland had just returned from Orlais, making him part of the Vast Orlesian Conspiracy.  I don't suppose Loghain had anything against the rest of the family but of course he could hardly reward Howe with the Arldom of Highever with all those heirs in the way.

 The OGB is no Mordred.

Can you imagine the boiled ****** among the DA Fandom if the OGB was a monstrous freak that caused untold misery to Thedas and killed the Warden? Such wasted potential.

This idea make no sense, if this abomination renowed as the OGB would have been relevant or plot critical in any shape with his own related issue those who rejected the ritual had nothing to do in that DA game because they killed the archdemon soul and thus they solved the problem at the root several years before ,basically there would be no need for them to play this plot.
Bioware had no other option than give priority to those who rejected the ritual simply because their world state was easy to implement and far more flexible and unless Patrick want to give that power to Solas the OGB was meant to be nothing.
This is the only thing i can see for this plot fight a more powerful version of Solas.

Great discussion. Anything that brings more pre-modern history into Dragon Age discussion is quite right by me. B)  Some points:

Most of what we learn about the history of Thedas will be inaccurate and biased, and as the Couslands have been an influential and respected family for so long recently, much of the context of those past events will be lost. While people in 9:30 Dragon overlook their resistance to Calenhad's unification , I'm sure that at the time they were looked on with much suspicion and derision for their deviant behaviour.

Which leaves us with the situation in 9:30 Dragon. You're right, of course: Bryce Cousland and his pack are beloved. Their device is even a Laurel Wreath. Very peaceful. However, that trusting and welcoming attitude - part of what makes them so popular - leads to their brutal destruction. It's entirely because they have done nothing to deserve it that I find the fall-from-grace story to be so compelling. It shows that bad things just happen, even if you've done everything possible not to 'deserve' it.

I can think of a different option.  If there's an OGB, then he's the enemy in DAI.  If there isn't, then Corypheus comes back from the dead.

No gaming company would like to waste millions of dollars for optional contents especially when it is exclusive only for those who
a)Played DAO
b)Used the DA keep
c)Did the ritual
There are plenty of players who never used the keep or simply never played DAO.
The optional char will always have a minor role and Corypheus was not optional because there is no reason for him to die based on the DAO choices.

I wonder if there any Cousland bastards wandering around Ferelden.

You can have sex with Iona in the Origin and Fergus mentions turns in the straw as if this is a situation the HN was actually caught in.

I don't think is possible beside Kieran since Iona is killed 100% if she was with the PC and both Fergus and Bryce are not the type to betray their wife.

I'm just going to quibble minorly at the notion that Talleyrand and Bismarck form pre-modern history... honestly saw this in reference to the Frankish Empires and stuff as well today so I can't help but comment.

Yes it's older history but pre-modern? Ancient? I don't know, I would think at least 2000 years for that mark, personally.

Anyway, carry on and all that.

With Fergus' wife Oriana, during the Noble origin where she states that she'll be there to support the younger Cousland son while he manages the castle, I did get the impression that there was something more to that. Or maybe that's just me...

The Couslands are kinda dorks to be honest, IMHO. I started with a City Elf Origin and that quickly uh....

Anyway, then I think I tried a human noble and it was like "Oh here you are" and I was like oh, the one I'm supposed to play sort of deal.

It was kinda polished and stuff though so I guess I didn't mind in a sense.
