At that point Duncan help to escape is useless as both dog and the future Warden and Eleanor are perfectly capable to escape and this was proved by the countless soldiers that they killed before to reach the passage of whom only the Cousland family know the secret, without the young noble it is Duncan who would have died in the castle, because he didn't' know the existence of the secret passage or how to use it you are making the reverse here and the function of the secret passage was to avoid the others soldiers outside of the castle.

So in order to thanks the family that saved him Duncan decided to poison the young Cousland and forced him into battle at  Ostagar 3 minutes after the joining, when the young Warden was not even capable to lock the Archdemon's nightmares
(see i have my own theory regard to what happened on the top of the tower of Ishal when the Warden got defeated for the only time in the game by those arrows, when it was proved that so few arrows cannot defeat the character in game i like to think that the spasm of the Warden's white eyes on the cutscene of the tower of Ishal is the Archdemon's mind control nightmare effect who defeated the Warden not those 2 arrows)

I agree that they didn't need Duncan to escape, but I think Duncan still would have been able to find the secret passage. Bryce would have told him. In fact, Bryce probably told Duncan to take him to the larder since that is where his wife and pup would go in order to escape the castle using the secret exit.

I didn't like the automatic loss at Ishal either. My explanation is that Alistair was supposed to be shielding my Cousland who was lighting the beacon (and was dual weapon with no shield). Thanks Alistair. Personally, I don't see why they couldn't have had a blinding white light and ear piercing roar knock everyone out (which we would later find out was Flemeth in dragon form). Falling for the obvious trap of the Architect was another downer.

Aren,You are correct.. The Coulsands are wiped out in the none noble game.

I agree Duncan poison young Cousland without any information about the joining and its aftereffects  and I will add he was not ready for any battle since IMHO he would still be in shock of losing his family and I have no doubt his mind is more on finding his/her brother and getting revenge on Howe. This doesn't make a stable fighter for fighting Darkspawn-even some of the reply choices to King Cailan proves that.

All of my wardens are not happy to be a Grey since they was forced into the Greys by Duncan. My city elf would rather find the Dalish  but,is tricked by Duncan when he conscripts them into the Greys. Even the Dalish elf is back stab by his keeper when she acknowledges Duncan's conscription.

In short its like being drafted into the Army against your will and 6 months later finding yourself in a hot LZ  in a place you don't wanna be in the first place and that's by my personal experience.

Fergus.

Agree with the poison statements. But I think the Cousland was ready for war.

Fergus is  NPC and IMHO doesn't count since he went missing in the Wilds and in none Nobel games he dies there.

Pup Cousland was more then willing to march to war but, after his/her family was killed I suspect 'pup' was more interested in taking revenge then becoming a Grey-even King Cailan told Pup to take his/her grief out on the Darkspawn.. My female pup rips into King Cailan and asks him what he knows of her grief-she can be such a ill temper thing.

-snip-

No Fergus is the only Cousland who survives regardless of Origin picked. He becomes Teyrn of Highever in later games.

On topic. I don't think the Couslands are Mary Sues, we just don't get to see the skeletons in their closet.

So,far I haven't cross path with Teyrn Cousland yet in DA:2  or as I stumble through my third game of DA:I.. I know if  'pup' dies in DA:O he becomes the Teyrn of Highever by King Alistair's decree..

There's a wartable mission, "The Teyrn of Highever", available in Haven. Basically Fergus tells the Inquisition he and Highever miss Justinia, too, and tell them he's holding a vigil they can come to if they want. So yes, he definitely survives no matter what.

No mention of him in DA2, though.

Yeah, but he's a Cousland who survived.

That's fine for your Cousland, but mine was willing to let the revenge dish grow cold, especially when that meant saving the nation first.

In non human noble games assuming you don't make the ultimate sacrifice, he's one of the nobles in the royal hall you can meet, he will thank you for killing Howe and wished he could have done the the job himself which given his wife and son were murdered it is understandable.

Ashagar, Thanks.. I will need to talk to more people when I get to that part in the next game.. I'm currently doing a Cousland play through now and just finished the DR with Morrigan.

That's cool, my main Hero dislikes being one as well, and doesn't consider himself part of the order as it existed before him. He strives to change it, in Ferelden at least. Still, saving the nation from Loghain and the Darkspawn were higher priorities to him than bringing justice to Rendon. He knew it would happen eventually anyway, and letting the tension build on Rendon the whole time was a form of revenge in itself. To see his assassination attempts fail constantly, to see the Cousland steadily rise to power, and to see Loghain's power being eroded every passing day, that must have driven Rendon to madness. Which would explain why he tortured people. He was taking all that frustration out on others.

My secondary Hero was fine with being a Grey Warden. He didn't learn about the 30 year lifespan until the same time he learned about Avernus' concoction, and he drank it to gain power and prolong his life. He's also a bloodmage who encouraged Avernus to more unethical research. It's also no coincidence that he had no problem with Rendon Howe, except for the fact that he picked the wrong horse to back. But he never had any plans to follow orders from the Grey Wardens. He has his own plans.

That's is following the lore , i mean if the OGb was fathered by a Cousland then,no matter at how "weird" the mother or the grandmother
(Flemeth of course not Eleanor) are or at how evil the soul of the archdemon could have been, the child cannot be a Mordred 2.0 because is a Cousland,a family without black sheeps.
Every other origins has it's flaws, look at the Amell they have black sheeps too (Gamlen....),or Brosca, but the Maker forbid that the Cousland could have one single member of their family with a flaw despite all the betrayals that they suffered in their history.....

Heh.. that's one way of looking at it, I guess. It fits at least. I can't help but seeing it from a outside/technical point of view though.. That it's kind of a copout and treating players delicately. Not lore.

According to the Collectors Edition Game Guide, Duncan was a Duel Wield Warrior.
Edit: I just checked in the Toolset, he was a warrior.

Vindicated.

Since most non-playable, non-combatant NPCs are designated as Warriors in the toolset, that isn't a good indication of anything. 'Warrior' appears to be the default class for  any NPC that hasn't a combat AI package.

A random sampling of some other 'Warriors':

Oren Cousland

Isabela

the squirrel in the Korcari Wilds

Flemeth

Ashalle

Shianni

Cyrion

Mother Hannah
Scribe Aldous

Niall

Senior Enchanter Sweeney

Kaitlyn

Bella

Arlessa Isolde

Note that according to the toolset, Duncan is 'The bastard son of a noble family that does not recognize him (the reason he took pity on Alistair)' which is not accurate by any stretch of the imagination.

That's what a Mary Sue is. The story constantly praises them up and down for being the most perfect, wonderful, awesome, super-special-amazing people ever, but then fails to mention any flaws to balance out the long list of virtues.

I've met people in my life time that was squeaky clean and above reproach and was good solid people.

Then I've met the Howe and Loghain types-power hungry and didn't care what they did or who they stepped on to get that power-in this case power being money.

And that got them killed.

Would you pick apart an elf family that appeared to be perfect in nearly every way, I wonder?

In truth the Tabris family in their own way seem to qualify as that.  As presented the worst thing you can say about them is that they have a cousin who enjoys getting a little tipsy at parties and I'll measure that against "they were the biggest obstacle to the creation of Ferelden" any day.  There's no hint that the mother was guilty of anything except defying a discriminatory law against elves carrying weapons, they're rich enough to excite the envy of spiteful neighbours and the most likely characterization of the protagonist is "Goes around, tells esteem-boosting stories to children and gives money to beggars and distant relatives in financial straits on their wedding day".  Whereas the most likely characterization of the Human Noble is "possibly bitches about the responsibility they've been given before a having a one-night stand with the son or the maid of a visitor".  When I was playing Tabris my primary concern was, "Can I impose on my father to put her up or should I give her enough money to get the whole family to Highever?".  When I was playing Cousland, my primary concern was "Is there any way I can get them both in bed at the same time?"

When I return to the Alienage  I stopped at home and spoke to Soris  in order to find out what was going on. You will need to ask him questions.

I found this in my first play through while looking for Shiani since the last I saw of her before leaving with Duncan she was in the house.

At that point of the game I often wondered what Leliana  thought when I ask about Nesiara.

Well what with the purge and plague, bribing their way makes a certain amount of sense.
