Does the door after the bridge ever open?  Or is the bridge only for XP and loot?

There is nothing beyond the door. It's just a wall in-game. That section is a mini-boss area of sorts. The two Sha-Bratol enemies there are overpowered and take a while to kill, at least on Nightmare.

They also like to get stuck in the walls and never die, though I haven't had that problem in my last few games. I agree that door is a big tease. It really looks like it should open. I actually thought maybe one of those enemies might drop a key, which is why I was so irritated that they'd get stuck in the wall. Alas, no key. It's just a wall that looks like a door.

I was disappointed it was just a wall too. I thought it might be another place to explore, but it's just like the city buildings you see in the cavern walls in the Deep Roads, a veneer.
