What was he like? Haven't had a chance to read the books, but I'm interested. Was he a lot like Alistair or Cailan? Why did Loghain like him as much as he did?

He was quite a lot like Alistair. Very jokey, uncertain of his leadership abilities, etc. Loghain found him exasperating, but was won over by his charming personality. Maric had that effect on people.

Yeah, basically the best of Cailan and Alistair though he starts out an overhwelmed and frightened youth, in spite of being on the run his entire life he's not especially prepared to fill his mother's role after her death, he rises above it thought, obviously.

As others have said.  He reminds me a lot of Alistair, although a bit of a hardened Alistair by the end of The Stolen Throne.   He experiences a lot of tragedy quite early, starting with watching his mother (the rebel Queen Moira) get murdered while he's still basically a kid.

He also has to murder his lover, an elven bard, because she betrayed the rebellion and most of his troops were massacred.  He had to do it for the realm, and that in part is what Loghain talks about when he talks about Maric making sacrifices for the realm.  He knew the effect that would have on him.

 

He was close to his wife, but they were more best friends than lovers.  Theirs was an arranged marriage.  Still, her death not too long after Cailan's birth hit him hard.  He had a bit of a deathwish with depression.  

 

When he did fall in love, it was with Elven women both times so clearly he had a type

One of those lovers was Alistair's mother.  The story about a "washing woman at Redcliffe castle"?  She died in childbirth with her child.  Alistair is not related to his "sister" Goldanna.  His real mother?  Former grey warden turned leader of the mage rebellion Fiona, who you meet if you side with the mages at Redcliffe Castle.  There are extra lines of dialogue if Alistair becomes king, but he never finds out she's his mother.  She says it's been too long to tell him.

 

Maric was lost at sea.  His body was never recovered, but after many years he was presumed dead.

He wasn't.  He was captured first by the Antivan crows, then sold to a Tevinter blood mage who believed his blood had special powers.  Alistair travels to Tevinter, finds him and sets him free, though being separated from the Tevinter torture device that was keeping him alive kills him.

Also, we have no information about Maric's father. For example, we know names of his grandfather (Brandel, I think), mother (Moira), wife (Rowan), sons (Alistair and Cailan), even both elven lovers (Fiona and Katriel), but his father is not mentioned.

You're right, I think, and that's a very odd omission.  We know nothing about the Prince Consort except that he took Moira's last name as she was queen.
