I'm a big fan of the Leaping Shot stealth upgrade. It's a cheap way of getting an evade, a permastealth, and a damaging ability at low level.

But I haven't quite figured out what the rules are. I know that if I'm in stealth when I fire the shot, the stealth won't trigger. That seems fair, since otherwise this ability is strictly better than Skirmisher - permastealth while continuing to attack at range would be a little silly.

I also know that if I'm wandering around outside of tac cam, I can fire at nothing in particular to trigger stealth. I like that also, because it's given me some ideas for "pacifist" characters that do 0 direct damage.

However, I'm a little baffled by the behavior when targeting an enemy. About 70-90% of the time (varies per battle), the stealth triggers without a hitch. Sometimes, it doesn't, for reasons I don't understand. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with hitting the enemy or not? I thought maybe I was doing something wrong with the timing, so I alternated between "tap the button once and only once" and "mash it as soon as the previous ability has fired". But that made no difference.

Has anyone figured out what the rules are? Is there a range component to it, like "if you're X close to a targeted enemy, an arrow must hit it; if you're farther away that's not necessary"? I notice sometimes it fails several times in a row, which is why I think range might be involved. The enemy doesn't move, I go back to the same perch as before, and it fails again.

If I untarget immediately before firing, will it work more reliably?

Did you take damage while doing the shot at target case? That might break you out of Stealth.

Otherwise, I think you've got all the rules. At least all the ones I've found myself.

No damage, I know that for certain. When I take damage, it's preceded by a few seconds of panicked kiting after the stealth doesn't proc. :D

Might respec a Tempest point to get regular Stealth as a backup, but I'm loath to give up damage if I can learn how to get reliable stealth from Leaping Shot.
