So I think that since we're all here discussing MEA when it's still a year away from release, it's fair to assume that we're all, in some way, looking forward to it. But after reading posts and playing other games I find myself slightly bothered by this:

  1. The Wild Hunt: the Johnny Cash song used in the first trailer is a song about the Wild Hunt. Yanick Roy has already stated that there "was a very good reason why the song was chosen" for the trailer, which may or may not confirm that MEA will have some ties to the tale of the Wild Hunt.
  2. The Remnant: based on the April 2015 leak, the Remnant "a once powerful and mysterious race" play some kind of role in the game. If you've played Rise of the Tomb Raider, you know that one of the factions in the game is called the Remnant.

Are you worried that two of the known concepts for MEA (the Wild hunt and the Remnant) are already being used in popular games? Do you think it will affect the way you (or anyone) perceive MEA when it is released?

Just curious...

I mean, the Wild Hunt is also used in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as its main villain.

I'm sure its use here is more symbolism rather than literal ghosts.

No, even if they are the main themes - show me a theme or topic that's never been treated in literature / art. It's presentation, narration and gameplay that makes the difference.

Ancient and terrible races work for me - I have no major issues, and I probably won't get tired of them anytime soon.

The Wild Hunt is as old as anything, and it's cool as hell. I have no objection to Mass Effect running with it and putting it in spaaaaaaaaaaace.

There are four different American made movies about Krampus coming out over the next few years. I didn't even know who Krampus was a few months ago.

Trending topics/themes/aesthetics in media aren't unusual, and there will always be influences you can find in any work of fiction. It doesn't bother me.

It's called "Ghost riders in the sky". Since our PC is called Ryder, I'd assume we're the Wild Hunt. God have mercy on those Keth.

If we are going to be Ghost Riders in the Sky (although The Wild Hunt sounds more badass... and it's shorter), I hope we are going to abduct these filthy aliens and put them into laboratories to make tests on them... you know... for science purpose.

(this must be themikefest's wet dream)

Hell, the Wild Hunt has been kicking around forever. I first encountered it in Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising, but she was, of course, taking everything in those books from existing mythology. I'm pretty sure it's also in the AD&D DMG.

I believe that can be blamed on The Office (U.S. version).

I don't care if they reuse themes seen in other media, what matters to me is if they execute it well and manage to avoid the pitfalls of DA:I.

Doesn't bother me. Milky Way explorers encounter strange and fantastical return of the Remnant, terrible **** ensues. Classic plot, tried and true, not very original but I dont care.

So what? They used Johnny Cash's song, I'm not expecting the Wild Hunt (from the Witcher series) to appear in ME:A. And if the leak of the Remnant is even true, why would I have a problem with a completely different faction (in every single way) having the same name in a completely different game series?

There's nothing even hinting at the use of the same concepts. They're just the same words that happen to be used. They represent entirely different things.

It would also be fun to see all the posters who come here thinking they're ripping off the witcher, and not drawing inspiration from the same thousand year old piece of folklore.

Aint no such thing as "completely original."  Not in print, on tv or film, and videogames.   Neither of these things is a concern to me.

maybe the Wild Hunt refers to a bounty hunter mission.

maybe The Remnant or the last of a species.

dont bother me.

That was in the first book? I barely remember some of the details, but I loved that series to death in my early teens.

Nothing's original, it depends on how it's used.

So the name itself doesn't bother me.

At this point there are no longer original ideas but original interpretations of established concepts.

Stuff gets reused and repackaged all the time.  I don't care about originality as much as I care about execution.

Technically speaking, weren't the Reapers and Collectors basically Ryders/Hunt-like-group in original trilogy? I mean, they were ghosts of various species who abducted organics and forced them to join their fleet/cavalcade.

(their motivation is other thing)

I'm not against the idea, but I would rather be "the bad" guy in Andromeda. Although we will probably end up as another glorious protagonist who will kill the great evil from the past...

Not really. I'm fine with overlapping themes between games as long as the execution is drastically different.

The reapers as originally portrayed were space cthulhus (which I loved), but I can definitely see the resemblance in their depiction in ME2 and ME3. Regardless, it's always a neat idea to run with, even though I prefer space cthulhu in this case. Of course, sticking with space cthulhu would have meant that the reapers actually remained beyond our understanding as opposed to being reduced to a pimp my ride meme.

Can't say I don't love the idea of us embodying or fulfilling some andromedan race's terrible spectral myth, though.

I laughed when I saw a commercial for the Star Wars cartoon debuting a cliche-sounding vilain called "the Inquisitor". In Guild Wars 2, sylvari refer to their purpose in life as their "Wyld Hunt".

Anyhow, at the end of the day these are just words that get repeated coincidentally. It's amusing that this happens relatively often (esp in sci fi/fantasy) but nothing to pull my hair over.

Mass Effect survived ripping off Revelation Space, I think using an old myth as inspiration and incorporating the word "remnant" into the plot isn't going to harm it in the slighest.
