In my first play through, I did it after saving Redcliffe from the undead and securing the mages' help through Broken Circle. That said, you first hear that the Redcliffe Knights are on this quest as early as Lothering, when you find the body of the knight killed by the highwaymen. Can this quest be done pre-Redcliffe? I ask because I want my city elf rogue to do Broken Circle in the Ancient Elven armor set and the final piece (after completing Nature of the Beast) is supposedly in the Ruined Temple.
How soon can you do the Sacred Ashes Quest?

You can do it as soon as you have access to Denrim, just go to brother Genitivi house and follow as usual.

Thanks. I thought as much but worried that acting prematurely would screw things up and block proceding with the quest. Looks like the only things that must be done in sequence are origin story, joining & defeat at Ostagar, and Lothering.

Rats! I just went to Genitivi's house in Denerim and my warden acted as if she just randomly walked into a house and didn't seem to know who Genetivi was even after Weylon mentioned him. I looked over the codex and I have the letter from Ser Henric about Brother Genetivi being the key to finding the ashes, so I thought that should've been enough. Perhaps I needed to ask Ser Donlen more questions about it? Oh well....such is the problem with multiple playthroughs. Because you know what's supposed to happen, you skip over needed conversations in the interest of moving things along only to find yourself blocked later on.

Nope. In this case the dialog is written for the the possibility that you don't know who Genitivi is. You just have to sigh and move past it. Something to bear in mind is that is that your dialog choices are just the general gist of what you are saying. You can mentally rewrite them quite a lot.

Yeah, I think you can still trigger the quest by trying to search the back room. The imposter Weylon will confront you as usual.
