When your whole party drops dead, is the dragon by any chance flapping its wings?

Somewhere a grammar teacher is crying.
Apart from that, you gotta use anti-dragon tactics. When it starts flapping its wings, bunch up and throw Barrier. Never have anyone in front of it apart from the tank. Use anti-armor skills and items. Use anti-dragon runes if required.

Oh gosh, where's the punctuation?! That is the biggest run on sentence I've seen in a long time.

I have never posted on a forum before but I was so pissed today and the last day and a half after tryin everyone in my crew to beat the sandy dragon in the hissing hills at level 21 that I had to say something first off its rediculous everytime I get the dragon down to a quarter health somehow everyone except my controlled character dies
GIT GUD
Make sure your 100% ready before taking on Dragons they tend to not like dying so easy. I think you should stick to fighting Nugs.

Didn't read, impossible to do so without punctuation. Learn to Play the game, then come back. Sandy Howler is still by far not the hardest dragon in the game.

I'd try, but I don't think I can claim I was practicing reading for my phonetics classes. I'll pass my cyber cookie and await another opportunity.

I don't even put that great a detail into tactics and i was still able to beat the dragons. I just bring 3 warriors (Myself, Blackwall and Iron Bull) ,set any abilities avaiable for the 3 that build up guard to preferred and one mage in Vivienne and set her Barrier and Revival abilities to preferred and i'm fine.

My advice is look qat each dragon's level an ddecide whether you'er at an appropriate level to challenge them. I don't te4nd to take on any dragon until I'm at least at the asme level they are. Sometimes qa level or 2 above them. Either way regardless you'll always be n for a long fight when taking on a dragon.

if you are talking about the Sandy Howler dragon in the HIssing Wastes, it's at level 20 and maybe a little too powerful for your party at level 21. You should wait a bit, level up some more. The game is capped at level 27 and really that's more than enough for any boss in the game, although the DLC bosses are pretty tough.
I have to agree with Animalboy82. I find taking a melee focused team with maybe a Knight Enchanter and a ranged mage which I control directly is always the best or the less tense way to go. You can just look at the difference in size between the Dragon and your PC to understand the advantage in getting and staying in close. The AI also has problems in avoiding fireballs and the like, and these powers are usually not used in close.
--------
The thing about your party members sometimes freezing up has been a glitch in the game for about half a year, and unfortunately is unlikely to ever be addressed. There are two ways to deal with this glitch: 1) shift control to the party member and give it a jump command; 2) use the disengage command. It's a problem but I usually am not too put out by it. You can pretend that that party member has just frozen up in fear and just needs a gentle reminder as to his job. edit You might try and repair your game in the Origin screen (if you're on PC).
Edit: All the dragons in the game have specific immunities and weaknesses, I think at all levels of difficulties. Usually the weakness is to an magic that is the opposite of its main attack. (eg. cold versus fire, spirit vs lightening).

I've like 9 PTs and adding more and hardly experienced an entire party freeze or a companion freeze in critical fights. (Stupid lunging at nothing, yes. Iron Bull, I'm looking at you though Bioware did some ironing to make sure he doesn't do it again) One companion may (it always seems to be Dorian, I think he's doing too much prancing), for some weird reason, get heavy dmg just by walking down a slope, go figure it out. And Varric actually did slip off a slope and went underwater at Crestwood, he actually held up the entire party while we searched for him and tried to get him from the water.
Combat-roll / dodge is the in-thing for warriors. Just do it! ![]()

Oh good, it's been a while since someone mentioned the gay character's prancing. Whew, we can't forget that!
