OP states that OP has killed six dragons so far. Op does not say which six. The question I have has OP killed any dragons that are also matriarchs? The matriarch dragons are all armored (except the Frostback) and call their children (dragonlings) to aid them when health falls to 50% or below. The call goes out while at the same time stunning the party. The AI appears to especially like covering the approach of the dragonlings with the wing flap. The dragonlings have a tendency to go after any range character. Some will also attack the melee characters if taunted.. Three of the matriarchs are fire-based and the other is cold-based. Make sure that the proper resistances are in place.
It is best to deal with the dragonlings as quick as possible otherwise she will keep calling dragonlings. It is also to advantageous to have gear with heal on kill (replenish health by killing dragonlings) or guard.
Some of the dragons create rings that either detonate.when the dragon stomps down or electrify the water or ground. If the character is within the rings of electricity the character will take constant damage until it dissipates. The fire rings simply detonate like a fire mine.
The point is to be prepared to face them. Also as others have stated the dragons are optional except for the Red Lyrium Dragon and the Guardian of Mythal's temple if your character drinks from the well.
