I can't imagine how this could end poorly...

I voted for Anders and I'm sure a flame war will arise soon. I feel he is the best fit of the DA2 theme that we can't fix everything and Hawke is not the only agent of change in the game. It also makes the end more emotionally connected. I think most of my Hawkes who hadn't romanced Anders would find a way to justify killing him, but I can't play a Hawke who's romanced him who can go through with killing him. The most they could do was tell him to leave their sight.

Plus I do feel he genuinely loves Hawke, at least in Act 2, and is sincere in his emotions, however messed up they are.

Don't worry, I'm an Andersmancer as well. I don't particularly care what people think about Anders as long as they don't insult me personally or other Andersmancers. We just need to accept that we all got personal tastes.

Hardcore Fenrismancer, here.  He's the reason I have even been able to attempt multiple DA2 playthroughs.  Of all Hawke's companions, he and Sebastian feel the most believable to me, and while I do like Sebastian, he comes off as a little too much of a Prince Charming type.  Fenris has a hard time showing his emotions, but it's the little bits of dialogue that show how much he really does care.

I don't dislike any of the other romance options, but Anders just has too many red flags for me, Merrill doesn't seem mature enough for a real relationship, and Isabela's romance arc just kinda feels off (although I keep thinking of her as the female equivalent of DAO's Zevran, so I may not be evaluating her romance arc entirely on its own merits.)

I'm redoing a playthrough in which I originally partially completed both Anders' and Isabela's romance arcs, though.  My rogue!Hawke is a playboy and a bit of a cad... unfortunately for Anders, who will probably find himself dumped again.  My goal is to complete at least one playthrough with each romance, though, so hopefully I can find the right Hawkes for each of them eventually.

I'm ashamed to say that I've only ever played Merrill's rivalmance, never her friend romance. And I don't remember if I've played the Anders rivalmance or only friendship. I really do like that there are two separate romance paths, even if sometimes it doesn't make sense why the companion would continue a rivalmance.

Seconding the Fenris romance. It hits all my story telling buttons :D

I did like Isabela's (though not enough to get invested in it), and it's the only other one - aside from Sebastian, who I've never romanced - that I've been able to finish.

Exactly.  I know some people consider Fenris' character rather flat, and he and Anders both suffer the most from the time jumps, but Fenris' struggles just really resonate with me, particularly when he falls short of the standards he sets for himself (and to give him credit, he seems to be the kind of person who holds himself to higher standards than he does his companions.)  For me, his romance arc does an excellent job of highlighting this aspect of his character.  Even when he walks out on Hawke in Act 2, it's obvious to me that he's very conflicted about it and that there's a part of him that very much wishes he could stay to talk things out.

...And since this isn't the Fenris character discussion thread, I'll shut up now. :)

For me, it might be that I haven't experienced the Fenris romance enough, but I have a hard time telling the difference between his friendship and rival romances. I think that's because they're more subtle, though, whereas the Anders and Merrill romance tracks are very clear. And Fenris doesn't really change as a character as much as slightly changes his views on certain mages, so it's much more subtle of a difference.

Isabela

I have to agree. At first I thought Merrill's romance was more intimate but now that I think about it, earning the admiration of Isabela seems more of an accomplishment. It takes Hawke years to build up to this point. Although Isabela doesn't say she wants to marry again I still find the moment where the two embrace before the final confrontation to be more, not to sound racist, human. And it's nice to see Isabela kicking and killing in DA:I, unlike Merrill who got stranded in the Free Marches babysitting refugees (ironically how we first found Anders, the ****).

For the more ruthless Hawke, it's nice to have a partner who would be fun to fight and reave with on the high seas or land.

I am also betting that Isabela's love scene took up most of the budget for romance animations in DA2...

(Spoilers are okay in here, aren't they?)

Anders.

I was no big fan of Awakening, but I really liked Anders in there. From the very first moment I met him: He burned down the demons, still fire on his hands, turned to the warden (took a somehow "oops"-like look at the dead templars surrounding him) and was like: "Ehr, I didn't do it!". I like his somehow cynical, somehow easy-going character. I like that cat-and-mouse-thing he used to play with the one particular templar lady (I forgot her name, sorry). And yeah, I got a thing for mages (though I'm more a dog- than a cat-person, sorry Sir Pounce-A-Lot).

He changed, a lot.

Meeting him again in DA2 was somehow sad. I still recognised some of his old character traits but Justice brought in a very new aspect. Anders is some kind of idealistic, something I like and fall for. And he is passionate about everything he does. He got devoured by his anger about the unfairness of the world. He wanted freedom for the mages, equality. A healer, lost in between hate and despair. He tried to do the right thing... and did like the worst thing possible. I feel unable to see him as bad person, for what he wanted to achieve was a noble goal.

But there is no excuse for what he did I guess.
From what I learned in DAI I have to say that I'm not sure if he is still in co-existence with Justice. Or already fully posessed.

"I wish I still had your innocence."

Ander for sure. I tried Fenris and Isabella too, and tehy were fun, but somehow, I keep ending up with Anders in every playthrough. Initially it was, because he reminds me so much of a younger Charles Dance (and I'm a huge Charles Dance fan for many years now) and I loved his new voice (was never fond of his Awakening voicing).

Isabella is funny, but she comes not even close to Zevran in Origins (he's my favorite romance there) and I'm always pissed off with Fenris and his 'it's not you, it's me'-dialogue. Not what a Lady wants to hear after a nice night :P , so I usually dump him there by taking the most hurting response. I would love to finish that romance one day (especially with a mage Hawke), so I have to try a few more playthroughs  . I would love to finish Isabellas too. I'm not that fond of Merrill. I was really creeped out, when she was standing in my room one day and trying to start something, I dumped her quickly. I know, most people find her very cute and her voicing is just wonderful, but she creeps the hell out of me. Sebastian was never an option for me, I like the scottish accent, but he  is a bit too pious for my taste.

And I don't see, why this should become a flame war. Most topics in this board are very civil compared to other discussion boards. And characters, storylines and romance options are totally and wholly subjective. I don't like Merrill, but I can totally understand, why a lot of other people adore her. And I can equally understand, why many people don't like Anders. I would never dream of convincing someone to see it my way. Would be boring, if we all had the same tastes, wouldn't it?

I tried Anders on my first playthrough and I found him insufferable at times (despite his good intentions).

Voted for Fenris, though Anders is pretty much a tie when it comes to preference. Both great, even if for very different reasons. :)

ETA: Oops, I was meant to elaborate on my reasons, sorry about that.

Well, it really depends on my playthrough. My canon playthrough features a mage, diplomatic Hawke, whom I always friendmance with Fenris. Fenris is cynical and bitter (for very good reasons) and he has a hate for mages that can reach to very narrow-minded levels - at least the way I see it. Mage Hawke manages with their actions and words to make him reconsider *some* of his beliefs and make him see and judge people beyond their mage status. Not by that much, mind you, considering how Kirkwall mages somehow manage to prove Fenris' wariness right more often than not. Still, the fact that he finally sees Hawke at least as more than a mage, that they're actually a person worthy of respect, even a person worth loving, is quite satisfactory.

With that said... I prefer Anders with a warrior or a rogue Hawke. In that playthrough, I headcannon that Hawke has a tendency to be protective of mages because of their sister, a protective streak that extends in Anders' direction as well. From there, it feels natural for them to feel something more for Anders, especially since they're not fully aware of the complications of Justice possessing Anders (unlike how I headcanon a mage Hawke, who always considers that thing 'creepy'.)

Not romancing a blood mage/elf. I'd rather go on a date with the archdemon

Isabela, Merrill and Fenris are all pretty good. If I have to choose, I'd probably pick Merrill.

The only one I haven't done (and never will) is Anders.

Isabela for me, but I'm currently trying Anders for a kind of "canon" run. The romance isn't for me, but I do like how dynamic it is when you're both mages.

Merrill!  I love that cute little accent!  I like Isabella and did one friendmance with her but her breasts are so large they honestly irritate me.  I tried Fenris since I like his sarcasm, but my Hawke is always pro-mage and he is so Nazi-ish about mages and so nasty to Merrill when she tries to befriend him that I took full advantage of his initial breakup with Hawke and gave up on him.

Isabela.

Tried Anders, but I couldn't go through it. Romancing Merrill was like romancing your kid sister. Fenris, not interested.
