Isabela.

Tried Anders, but I couldn't go through it. Romancing Merrill was like romancing your kid sister. Fenris, not interested.

My thoughts exactly.  Even my super flirty Hawkes don't want to go down THAT path.

I honestly wasn't too happy with any of the romance options in DA2; the romanceable characters all felt extremely shallow compared to the more interesting, non-romanceable ones.  Not that I would've preferred any of those characters made romanceable, but it sort of felt like they used the short romance arcs in place of characterization, in some points.

That said, my preference in my "canon" playthrough was for Anders, not so much for his character, but for what he represented.  For one, my canon Hawke is both female and a non-mage, and the idea of her running off with a charming Apostate sort of draws an amusing parallel with her mother that I find somewhat entertaining (although, in retrospect, I suppose it might also imply daddy issues in a way that had not been my intention).  Second, I don't really like the way the completed romances in Origins and DA2 are handled in future games, but I also don't like just not doing them (the completionist in me sort of screams in pain if I consider not including some aspect of the story), so a romance that can end naturally as part of the plot is ideal for me as well.

Poor Sebastian, few people seem interested in him.

Personally I can't abide the sanctimonious git, and he's the only companion I generally end up having high rivalry with, as I rather enjoy pissing him off.. but I expected myself to be in a minority.

Clearly not.

Fenris.

His character development over the course of the game, especially in a romance... wrestling with his instincts, his feelings for Hawke, his fear and shame and want. It's fascinating, and by the end of the game I had no doubt that he was Hawke's for life. That kind of loyalty and devotion is a big draw, and it's something I seek when I pick a favorite romance.

I loved Isabela and Merrill's romances, too. Bela felt very ride or die by the end of the game, and I feel like she livens Hawke's life (ooor maybe they liven each other's, if you're playing snarky Hawke). And Merrill's romance is so heartfelt. It feels like you really mean the world to her, whether as a friend or rival, and if someone were to hurt you, she'd ask them very nicely to spare your life... before ripping their throats out through their ******* via blood magic. AND THAT'S LOVE.

I definitely get the appeal of Anders, but his romance arc isn't for me. I... nope. Can't do it. Same with Sebastian, in a way.

Fenris because he is so passionate and I really love his VA as well as his appearance. I also like to think that Fenris and Hawke are a good couple because they both have suffered but now they both found somebody who will be there for them. They make themselves happy.

And this is multiplied by a factor of at least 10 when you're friendmancing him as a pro-mage mage!Hawke.

Also, you left out his anger.  One of the most powerful aspects of his character, for me, is the way he visibly struggles to control his anger.  And on the occasions when he finds he can't, he walks away rather than risk hurting Hawke physically.

Isabela by far and a way. Funny, Sexy and with sweetness as it becomes established. Really also ramps up the act 2 qunari, into a battle for the woman you love.

The magic is really that all of them have pretty engaging and sympathetic moments, it's really impressive.

I feel like Isabella's does have the most detail in it though.

Tbh, I'm not fond of either of the options for heterosexual male Hawke. Merill is a blood mage, and Isabela is too... sexually liberated, if you get my drift. I ended up choosing Isabela, because like Morrigan, the romance reveals a softer side... and also, I feel uneasy being around a mage who consorts with demons. Sorry Merril.

Bethany is my kind of girl. Super sweet. Sadly, she is Hawke's sister. Hmm. Maybe a new playable character could romance her? lol

I would've romanced Aveline as well.

I always thought Josie and Cass were DAI's answer to people who wanted to romance Nice Girl Bethany and Warrior Woman Aveline. :D

No Tallis? Tallis should be an option, or at least, there should have been a sentence saying, "I don't consider Tallis' to be a proper romance." Adding her makes for a more accurate poll, though I can understand not including her as hers was very small in the actual romance department (as opposed to Hawke flirting, which doesn't necessarily lead to a romance).

That said, I'm a Merrill fanboy (probably the one and only time I'll ever actually refer to myself as a fanboy). I was never going to choose Tallis'. As far as choosing "the best," it's been a while since I played DA2. So going on what I remember, all of them are equally good, minus maybe Anders' because of how his friendship romance was handled if you side with the templars.

Still Isabela for me.. but I think Fenris is a cool second. I've tried Anders, and it's good for the story.. but personally, he's insufferable.

While i do find Anders to be the best choice for my Viva La Revolution Mage, i don't find him that interesting. I like Sebastian alot, the romance lacks content, but i find the chaste marriage thing to be quite interesting actually, plus the accent is amazing. So Sebastian it is.

I dont like Sebastian, he is so vindictive, and inclined to abuse his political power.

Anders was my favorite companion in Awakening.  I also liked Justice.  DA II kinda ruined them both for me.

Not completely, but it would have been nice if it hadn't happened offscreen and between games.

Completely logical to me. Spirits are stupid and live in a world that knows nothing but instant results. They use their will to shape everything into being in the Fade.

So once Justice was here, he didn't understand any process of creativity or patience. A bomb was the next best thing.

That would have been interesting to see. Unfortunately, because of the lack of development time, there was nowhere to put that except at the start of the game, but that might hurt the narrative, or required a complete change in narrative. BioWare obviously didn't plan the Anders and Justice merger back in Awakening. If somehow they managed to fit it into DA2, it might've ended up in a cheesy foreshadowing scene, which could've led to people predicting what was going to happen, or something.
