Could someone help please. I have had an idea for something for this month's ccc but with my current skill set (hey I've been busy editing stuff alright?)... What I need is a model of a one metre diameter sphere (or pseudo-sphere) with a corresponding pwk (I think) to stop you walking through it. The thing is I need the skin for it to be in two pieces - ie top and bottom. These textures need to be square with an opaque disc that reaches right to the edge of the square, the rest being fully transparent. The actual colour of the opaque part is irrelevant.

 

If someone is kind enough to help with this, I plan on making a number of duplicates of the model and to create new skins for them.

 

I am sorry to be a pain but in the past I would have asked Rolo to help.

Maybe I could help; but I don't understand well your description. You ask for 2 textures, so I assume that both halves of the sphere have to be different textures. If that is not your intention, you should know that is possible to make 2 different texture mapping for each half of the sphere, but use the same texture in both sides producing asymmetric effect. In the other hand, if you want a different texture for each side, it's not necessary made 2 textures, both sides could be included in the same texture.

Thanks for the response. You are correct in that I need 2 different textures - one for the top and one for the bottom. I will be using the same bottom texture for each copy that I make of the model. It is the top-half that will vary.

 

As to the part that you have not quite understood what I was trying to say. You illustration is almost correct except where you have pure alpha needs to be the coloured part and where you have the coloured part needs to be alpha. Also the circle needs to extend all the way to the edge of the texture.

OK; Now is more clear to me. But I don't understand why do you need an opaque part and a transparent one in the texture.
If your intention will be to cover all of the faces, in the half-sphere with the opaque color, you don't need to include any transparency in the texture.

 

You only need to make 2 different mapping coordinates for each half of the sphere. You can make a simple texture which includes the textures of both sides. Or you can make two different textures, with probably would be better in this case in orther to make the variations of the top side, without altering the bottom part. In orther to use 2 textures in NWN probably, would be needed to divide the 2 halves of the sphere in two independent objects objects.

I only need the top texture to be like that. I need it to be like that because I will be combining two or more different sized graphics together to make one texture and I need to know whereabouts I am in relation to the edge for positioning the graphics.

But you don't map a plane onto a sphere, so your texture needs to be a square, not a circle. Even if you mapped it as a plane you still wouldn't need the texture to be transparent anywhere, that would just be a waste of information. If the circle had a different colour than the parts outside the circle, that would be enough.

But if you map a plane onto a sphere or semi-sphere you'll get a smeared mess.

I have (for a different project mind) hemi-spheres that map just like that. The trick to avoiding smears is twofold. First the circular part must just kiss the edge at 0, 90,180 and 270 degree points. The second is to use a certain effect in paint.net to distort your flat picture in the opposite direction so that when you apply the texture the two effects cancel each other out. IIRC the effect is called planetoid, but I could be wrong.

I'm not familiarized which that effect. As Zwerkules have said for a 3d object like a sphere, a flat square texture, use to be enough; But don't care. I could make that mapping for you.

Make a model with your sphere, which don't require any modeling skill because it's a standar object in MAX, and send that to me. I could made the sphere too, but I thing that is better that you do that in order to fit it which the scale and position that you have in mind. Just remember not to make it with too much segments, because NWN works with low poly models; I'll recommend you something between 12 and 24 segments, just depends how smooth you want that it looks...

I would love to but... I can make a sphere with no problem. What I can't do is to centre it at 0, 0, 0 and give it the radius I want which is 0.5 for a sphere with a diameter of 1. I just can't find the right commands to be able to do it. Nor can I find where you set the number of segments. If I could I would set it to 24.

@Shemsu I believe I got that effect from the plug-ins area of the Paint.net forums. Whether it was from the general plug-in section or the plug-in collections section I can't remember. Also I have stuck with version 3.5 because when version 4 came out it broke a lot of the plug-ins that were already there. I suppose I should check whether the ones I use most now work.

Ok I'll do the sphere, no problem. Just a questions. The pivot point of a sphere is located in its center by default, that means; Placing the sphere at 0, 0, 0 coordinates will cause that the bottom of the sphere would be cover under the floor in NWN. Is that what you want?

Sorry for the confusion. I would like it so that the bottom of the sphere rests on the floor i.e. when placed you see the whole sphere.

Related note, was there ever a VFX released to duplicate a Chromatic Orb effect? This seems similar.
