In my last playthrough I played a flirt.  That was fun, but it all had to come to an end when Cullen finally started to take notice, of course.

But, it got me thinking... (if you knew me you'd know to be scared at this point, FYI).  Is it possible to romance, say Blackwall, and then after the consummation (and the personal quest that follows), break it off and then romance someone else?  Or, once you lock yourself into a romance, even if you break it off, are you stuck not being able to start a new one?

I've started a playthrough where I'm trying that but just wondered if anyone knew if I was going to be disappointed, in which case I might change gears before it's too late.  LOL

I believe it is not possible once you are locked in with certain characters.    However, with some romances you can consummate the relationship so to speak and then break it off straight after; the dialogue and options allow for this.    Probably not recommended if you want to keep on their good side though.     I believe Blackwall is a tricky one and just flirting with him too much may tie you in so you can't escape (not tried it myself but that's what I heard and of course it could have been an early bug that has now been rectified).   Generally if you are pretty far advanced in a relationship with one person and then make a move on another, the latter will mention about the first love interest and make it clear you need to break it off before they will consider taking things further with you.    If you get too far into the game, I think that prevents the romance from starting as well.   Definitely need to have started the romance before the Arbor Wilds.

So bottom line is you should really make up your mind who you want to romance this time round.    However, that shouldn't stop you flirting with everyone in sight, even those who you can't actually romance.  Generally people tell you if they don't want you to.

As far as I know, you can break off your romance with Iron Bull even after the culmination (personal quest in his case) just by one single word.

Flirting with Dorian as female had no effect on my romances.

Flirting with Blackwall after arriving in Skyhold is tricky, especially if you want to romance Solas.

Flirting with Cass / Josie at the same time should be possible. As I remember,  Josie has a special romance scene where you can decide if you want to pursue her romance further or break it off.

Thanks for the replies.  I'm going to keep trying and see what happens.  My goal is to romance Blackwall until I find out about Thom Rainier, at which point I'll attempt to break up with Blackwall (one way or another) and start a romance with Cullen.  I'll post my results for other curious minds.

I'm pretty sure I got the opportunity to romance Josephine after romancing Blackwall then dumping him.

Be careful with that. I'm not sure, but I don't think leaving him in jail constitutes a break-up. I think you have to get him out, then tell him it's over.

Is there actually an option to have him rot, or do you just not do the wt operation? It's difficult for me to remember some of the alternate choices for some things because I usually tend to pick the same ones in every play (yeah, I'm a bore).

When talking to Cullen there is the option to "leave him there." I would guess at that point no WT ops appear and he will be executed. Or, you could pick one of the other options and then not do the op to get him out. I believe Cullen warns about not taking too much time if you pick the option, "I need to think about it," but I don't know how much time you have or if there really is a time limit. I usually get him out then leave him to stew in the Skyhold dungeon for a few missions.

Yeah, you can let him rot... did that last time just to see what happened.  I was planning on getting him out and handing him over to the Wardens after we're done saving the world with the hopes that I get to break up with him along the way.  We'll see how this goes... I just got to Skyhold so I've got a ways to go before I can try all of this.  lol

Give him to Wardens is the same as pardon except you get another dialog while judging him that can get approval or disapproval form him depending on your choice.

I was thinking about this as well. Can you 'ride the Bull', and then break it off and start a serious relationship with Dorian? How early in the Iron Bull romance do you need to end it before you can't romance someone else?

If I remember correctly, right before you sleep with him, you can change your mind. The second time you sleep with him (or the second cut scene, anyway), you guys are lounging in bed and I think there is a chance to say either "This is serious" or "I'm just messin' around." I don't know if that means you can then go hook up with someone else (like Dorian) afterward though.

Well, I'm still not sure if this is possible.  I somehow broke my romances...  Blackwall wouldn't move past kissing with no option to break it off and Cullen wouldn't move forward because I was with someone else.  Not sure if that was just a fluke bug or something that I specifically did that caused this but I just don't have the energy to try again, yet.  lol

If you've done the balcony scene with Blackwall and didn't break it off then, the next opportunity isn't until the Revelations judgment scene. Did you get Revelations to trigger yet? I think you have to do both WEWH and Adamant first.

Edit to add: this is the main why I don't switch romances mid-stream in DAI. So many reactions to each event are based on the relationship status. If you would switch to Cullen after breaking up with Blackwall so late in the game, then you miss out on all that content. :(

Well I know Dorian won't want to get together if there is someone else in the picture. This can happen as soon as after the Last Resort tavern scene when the Inquisitor picks the heart option. Dorian will say something about fighting for "what's in your heart," and if you are NOT involved with anyone else, your Inquisitor says, "I agree" and you have the first kiss. But if you ARE involved, you instead say, "Does that include me?" to which Dorian responds that it might, if you were unattached, and then I believe he says more stuff about it. So in the case of Dorian you can't really start anything at all (beyond the initial casual flirting), until you are completely free of whomever else.

If you were playing one of those types that wants to sleep around with everyone, I think you would have to strategize similar to DA2 with Fenris, and do Dorian first then tell him that it was a one-time deal thereby breaking it off completely and leaving you free to pursue others.

Yeah, I got "stuck" after doing both WEWH and HLtA.  From there to the end, I couldn't get anything more to happen with Blackwall.  I *think* it might have been because he disapproved too many of my decisions and I had the Trial on that doubles the disapproval.  Maybe someday I'll try again.  Maybe.  LOL

I've been wondering, what is the longest series of romances you can accomplish in a single playthrough? I know it's at least two, if you start with Iron Bull, but is it possible to do three? Four? What would they be and how?

Yes, I'm Necromancing my own thread because I *finally* got my answer!

It took 2 playthroughs to get this to work since my first one broke somehow but... I was finally able to romance Blackwall up through his Revelations, break up with him during my Judgement of him, and then go start a romance (truly start it, not just flirt) with Cullen.

My life is now complete.  My only new question is if I can get Revelations to fire off before doing WEWH and I'll check on that next playthrough.  I usually do Here Lies the Abyss before WEWH so I can see Alistair and Morrigan in the garden but I'll sacrifice that scene to see if I can somehow manage to get a dance with Cullen.  I have a feeling I'm going to need both of those quests done to trigger Revelations but we'll see.  I'm just stoked that I can romance both of them now!  Cullen's my fav but I love the idea of finding my Inquisitor in love with a lie.  Now I can have the best of both worlds!
