Who's with me?

Who else only sees Hawke as being a mage and supporting the mages?

Freedom for mages.

Certainly my canon Hawke is a mage.

However, DA2 is also fun for me as a rogue!Hawke.  Though of course I'm still pro-mage.  Gotta fight for Bethany's rights.

I play rogues. I like being able to open my own things. (It's a flaw inherited from other games. I must loot everything!) Aside from that, I rather prefer the idea that someone can fight for the rights of others and not only their own. I completely understand that a mage Hawke has more of a personal stake in the issue, but... I don't know, that just seems ordinary to me. Of course a mage Hawke would be concerned. There are too many stories in real life about people caring about their own rights (or perceived rights) ahead of the rights of others. I suppose playing a non-mage Hawke who still cares deeply about the situation of the mages gives me a little bit of confidence that people aren't completely irredeemable and selfish assholes.

Did that not get censored? Could have sworn that would get censored.

My snarky mage Hawke convinced a non-gaming friend to get into Dragon Age.  She's just starting with Origins, though.  :P

There is that, too.  Also, rogue!Hawke doesn't have quite as many immersion-breaking moments, and Kirkwall is kind of a rogue's paradise.  Add that to the fact that DA2 actually made rogues feel like a separate class to me, and I can definitely see a convincing case being made for pro-mage rogue!Hawke.

However, mage!Hawke just kinda makes more sense to me in terms of integration with the overarching storyline.  (Plus, if you play as a female mage Hawke who recruited Fenris and didn't keep Isabela around, the scene where Fenris negotiates a duel with the Arishok takes bada**ery to a whole new level.)

Snarky Male Mage Hawke player here! But mine was pro mage... but he hated Anders.... So there's that.

That's pretty much why I play rogue ... mage is just too immersion breaking (and DW rogue is ridiculously fun). My most recent run has Bethany go to the circle, so pro-mage at the end is a given.

Oh, the Mage Class is the best in DA2 though... It had my favorite little sibling in it...

Honestly, I'm not a fan.  Immersion issues aside, I don't find it as fun.  And I like Bethany, too  *shrug*

I have played as a Warrior, but never as a rogue. I got pretty far as a female warrior Hawke, but I never beat the game. Bethany's.... A bit bland to be honest. I pefer Male Snarky Hawke and Carver becuase Male Hawke has such a good snarky voice.... It was worth it for me, as a girl player to play as a dude for a session. And I like the brother dymanstic between Male Hawke and Carver too.

Either one works for me but, for some reason I favor a mage and I never like playing any game as a mage until DA:2. My preferred game style is slicing and dicing.

This is a strong point. I can see where you're coming from in wanting to fight for the rights of others. It definitely makes Hawke more admirable in that sense.

But what I like about being an aggressive pro-mage, mage Hawke is it's probably the closest you can come in the DA franchise to being a villain, or at least pushing that line as much as possible. You can support and practice blood magic, kill templars, help escaped killer mages (who also practice blood magic), and flat out you can support Anders in his actions, no matter how extreme. I think that Hawke becomes the most unique, since it's not the typical "I want to fight for my freedom story" it becomes more of a "is this person going too far and becoming an extremist" story and I think that's totally unique to DA2.

Oh. Oh wow. I... You're a genius. Forgive the laughing mixed with coughing and wheezing -- that's an amazing point. I don't normally do villain-y playthroughs, but DAI made me yearn for one so badly.

And now I might have to complete one.  (Although for quests like Wayward Son and A Bitter Pill, my own decidedly antislavery views tend to butt in a little.)

My canon Hawke was a female-Rogue. Rogue is surprisingly fitting in DA2. Unfortunately, I had no mage ties by the end and was pro-Templar so the final stretch was really nonsensical. My party was Aveline, and 3 archers. It was great.

I think my party actually would net a Fenris seal of approval.

Mage, always.
But I'm like that in Origins in Inquisition too. It's may favorite class to play.

I really feel like I miss an essential part of the whole universe (mages and their rights, the fade, demons, ...) when I try to play as a rogue or even warrior.

As far as class mechanics go, DA2 made me love the mage (I detest playing a mage in Origins), but I simply cannot go with Hawke being a mage. Part of it is my preference for Bethany, but a big part of it is that aside from liking the dagger mayhem, the story just doesn't work for me with Hawke as an apostate.

You think that's good? Now head canon a little, and imagine the reason for your Hawke being a little more toned down in DA:I is because of guilt. Imagine...

Have to say I'm always playing a Mage. I prefer elves but obviously in DA2 we're Hawke and human. I'd love the option to play a legionnaire scout rogue in DA2 that would be awesome. That has to be my second favourite class/specialsation to play. Pro-Mage all the way for me too.

I know where you're coming from, but for me that just ruins a perfectly good villain run. There can be irredeemable people in a story. Not every monster is secretly a Darth Vader/Jesus unholy hybrid thing... not that I'm focusing on any wolf in particular or anything. Ahem.

Male Mage Hawke definitely. Fighting for the rights of mages though? Well if you count him supporting the Templars' efforts to restore some semblance of order and stability to the city after what Anders did and being completely horrified at said action then, yeah, I guess he does fight for mage rights.

yeah mage is my favourite class in this series as well. Having said that the 2 heroes I've played as DW rogues were fun too as I love the breaking locks and catching enemies by surprise great fun as a rogue. So it's hard to choose between rogues and mages but for me I'd say maghe just edges it as I love throwing fireballs and attacking at distance and things.

I was Mage and supported Mages but I was not happy to do so. If there were more chances to crack the whip at how the Mages were doing things in Kirkwall, I'd have done so.

Story doesn't work as well as an apostate as it could have.

Very tempted for a future More Canon run to, while keeping Warden and Inquisitor as Mage, Hawke as Warrior. But I also like the sibling fighting with Carver and his eventual (in my playthrough) Grey Warden involvement so... I dunno.

I prefer Mage but I'm not particularly enthused about being one in DA2. Starting to feel the same about DAO too. Still very strongly Mage preferring in DAI though - I love the semi feeling of being a Male Sacreligious Neo Andraste hahaha.

I like rogues too. When I'm in need of some variation I'm okay with playing one too.

The idea of having a hero acting in the shadows and following a very own path of morality, that is something I can dive into.

Though not as much as I can into being a mage.
