Lack of party banter

I know the lack of party banter was an issue that was looked into already at the launch of the game. It did happen to me then and I thought they'd have fixed it by now. But in my latest playthrough I've noticed that yeah, part banter still almost never happen

The pattern I've noticed is that when I first launch a new game and go to the Hinterlands, there's quite a normal amount of banter. But after having saved the game and then quit, just to later start it up again the banter is all but gone.

Anyone else still having this issue? What I've managed to find, the banter is supposed to happen quite often. I kept track after entering Western Approach for the firs time, and after spending at least a little over two hours there I never had a single banter, only some comments from companions that was triggered by events, like finding the research supplies and the like.

So yeah is this just me or is anyone having the same problem? Is there a fix or will I just have to live with it?

I noticed this on my latest playthrough for me too. Rather disappointing. Especially as I never had a problem with banter triggering when the game first came out.

I doubt Bioware are still patching this game, tbh. I think we've got as many fixes as we're going to get. I would be interested if anyone knows a mod or a workaround for this though...

Yeah I think you're right, if that is a real issue there probably won't be a fix for it by now. I have been searching for workarounds but the stuff I've found sound weird and very unlikely to work. Didn't stop me from trying, but it still has yet to fix anything.

In my 4 playthroughs Bull and Dorian has yet to actually hook up because I simply won't get enough banter for that to happen...

Same, I get MAYBE one banter per hour in most zones, never anything except the comment about the dragon and, one about the keep when we first approach it in Western Approach. That's it.

Hinterlands, other than enviromental remarks, I can get a banter form Bull and Vivienne, no one else will talk there though.

Storm Coast - Cole and Blackwall only

Crestwood Bull and Blackwall

Fallow Mire - NONE

Western Approach - NONE

Forbidden Oasis - Dorian and Bull

Emprise Du Lion Vivienne and Sera

Hissing Wastes - Solas and Bull

If I don't have the right two in a location, I get nothing at all.

Western Approach seems to have particular problems, other areas are better for me.

Still too infrequent for my tastes, but banters do happen.

I did start it up again today, and after just half an hour or so on the Storm Coast I got two banters, which seems much more normal. The same companions as I had  during Western Approach, so it doesn't seem that I have a problem with companions.

It's probably not the area, it's how many quests you complete. Since you tend to complete a few in the Hinterlands and then leave, where ever you go next has the problem.

You can clear the banter problem by making sure all of your completed quests have been "announced". Go into your Journal, change to Completed Quests, and then one by one, click through each of the the quests that has a diamond/star by it. Do the same for collections, particularly Regions. You'll notice that once you go back to the active play screen, whatever you clicked on last will be announced. Perhaps some others will as well. That clears all the queued up audio. If you notice banter or music being absent again, repeat the process.

This works very reliably for me.

The bug seems to be that the little "cello strings grunting" sound that is made each time you complete a quest gets stuck. That stuckiness blocks further random banter and environmental music/audio. So you have to clear all your completed quest "sounds" before banter can play again.

Here's a video that shows how to do it:

This has got to be the stupidest bug in the history of bugs. I clear mine out regularly (even the ones that reappear) and it still took me 3 days of wandering to get 6 chess game banters.

Honestly, how can you say you tested a game if you don't test actual game-playing conditions? And, if that IS the culprit, why in the f'ing h*ll can't they disable that stupid sound since it's annoying in the first place? Or, better yet, once a quest is DONE, don't allow it to be highlighted again EVER.

Sooo many annoyances in this game, yet I still keep playing it. Yes, I think that means I'm insane. :P

Oh I remember doing this way back! I didn't know you still had to do it. But this is great help, I'll try it next time and see if it clear things up.

Thanks!

Well this is good to know. Thanks for that. Hopefully this will fix it.

Since VA hours are pretty expensive, you'd think they'd put a little more effort into getting banter rock solid.

On the other hand, QA hours are even more expensive, so maybe we should be thankful it works at all. ;)

I've found that a good strategy before heading out (while still in Haven/Skyhold) is to go through both the codex and the quest journal (all tabs) to un-star all new entries. So essentially when I enter a new area I'm starting out fresh as far as that's concerned.

However I will say that I've noticed some combinations are more chatty than others. With my same method, the combination of Dorian, Cassandra, and Cole seems to proc banter every 10-15 minutes, whereas replacing Cassandra with Varric has it happen every 15+ minutes.

Some banter points...

* Banter is supposed to happen every 10-15 minutes.

* Random environmental remarks also count as banter, so if you hear one of those the timer will have been reset and you'll have to wait again before hearing another banter.

* Traveling to another map resets the timer.

* I am NOT sure what affect using fast travel within a map (to go from one area to another) has on the banter, but I very rarely use it.

* I am NOT sure what affect having extended NPC conversations, such as with quest NPCs, has on the banter.

Some of it depends on how you play as well. If you're going to be exploring, herbing/mining, farming cloth/leather, etc, I'd suggest keeping some sort of timer so you can keep track of your banter procs**. If you are planning on leaving the map but haven't gotten a banter in 10 minutes, then wait around for another five minutes or so until you get one, and then leave after hearing it.

** I actually keep a clock nearby and write down the time after I hear each banter. Yes, it's a process, but I've been doing it for a while now and it just seems like part of my play for the game.

Nothing works for me, Just spent 3 hours in Hinterlands, all with Bull, Vivienne and, Sera NOT ONE BANTER. I got the  "Mages and Templars" remark from Bull, that's all they said for three hours. No mods, no cheats - vanilla game. Quests ticked off, the whole nine yards. Yes I've repaired, reinstalled etc... doesn't matter.

Some games I get one or two banters per zone IF I have the right party members, mostly I get One or two environmental comments per hour and that's all. Now  IF I run Cheat Engine with banter trigger, then sure I get banter every few minutes but, vanilla, little to none.
