This is to differenciate the two issue been present in the original topic, since one is getting frozen on loading screen and the other is the Cutscene Stuttering, which a lot happen to see after they applied the unofficial hotfix for the loading screen one. This last one is the target of this topic, will have 2 video to show off what the cutscene stuttering look like.

Link to original Topic: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/772168/1

First video mostly just show off a bit of the prologue video stuttering.
www.youtube.com/watch

Second video show some gameplay footage, followed by a stuttering cutscene section, to show the game actually run fine in normal situation. www.youtube.com/watch

Hope this will help figure out the issues and FRAPS is not causing any major extra stuttering, it actually already so bad that it almost got no impact to be recording.

POST YOUR SPEC if you are experiencing this trouble btw, cause the original tread is mixed with those that may come to only experience the loading freeze, so we need to seperate the info between each.

It is technically two sides to the same issue - as one is simply the consequence of the "workaround" of the other

No it is not a consequence of the other for it still happen in later cutscene that don't have the "workaround" before them, just look at the second video.

I still don't have the game, but if the cutscenes of mass effect 2 sttuter and other the ones in other games like Dragon Age, Mass Effect 1, MW2, Batman etc... run well in ypur PC then the problem may be in the Bink Video Engine. This engine is the binkw32.dll file that is located usually in the same directory of the main EXE of the game (MassEffect2.exe).

You can try to put the binkw32.dll file of the game that you can run well in the same directory of MassEffect2.exe (MAKE a backup of the file in the ME 2 dir first) and run the game without the no-intro fix and see if that works.

Hope that helps

Posting my spec now for didn't want to overcrowd the original post.

Win XP SP3
AMD64 3500+
ATI HD3850 512mb
2GB RAM
Integrated AC'97 sound
80GB hard drive

I know I am single core so officially under the minimum spec but someone from Bioware has said in the original topic that it shouldn't mind a single core related issue and someone with multi-core has already answering in this topic anyway, so show it has good chance to be due to something else.

I have this issue. I tried moving the binkw32.dll file from another game - no luck.

Basically whenever it plays a bink video file (.bik, prerendered movies like the combat training videos) afterwards the game horribly stutters until you load a saved game or exit and restart the game.

Honestly, now that my loading screens are green screens and I can create a character, this is the only issue I have with the game technically right now, and it makes playing the game after a bik video incredibly hard to do, especially when you have to make dialog choices or something before you get control back and can save/load your game.

the same cutscene with miranda questioning you is slow as molasses and then the VERY NEXT ONE where you meet with the illusive man is 100% fluid and it has the same damn planet as the intro cutscene. WTF is going on

Will have to check but I think it is because "where you meet with the illusive man" doesn't have a bink video before it has opposed to intro and the questioning. But off to find a video of where you meet witht the illusive man (will be faster then trying by myself through freaking slow cutscene =p)

ah ok Its definitely the prerendered scenes messing us up

after playing a prerendered scene (ANY scene) the entire game cannot go back to playing normal gameplay. and stutters.

optional into movie -> menu stutter on main menu but no freeze on first loading screen.
prerendered stupid planet/sunthing (for like 2 damn seconds before game cutscene)-> stutter until you can save/reload (long time)

shuttle warping out prerender --> stuttered game again until you can save reload.

as long as there are no prerendered cutscenes the game works flawlessly

you can actually just spam space bar to quicky get through it to see him, the cutscene is like 3 seconds after that portion but you need to save/reload before it

Just check and when you meet the illusive man you have section where you have control just before and no bink video between that section and the encounter with him. So the more I see this the more I think this is due to the bink video, something that happen during those said bink video.

The lag/stutter starts in the Miranda & Illusive man scene and there are two short bink videos before it.
It also starts after leaving the first station, there is a short bink video right there. Using mass relays causes the lag to start, there's a bink video there. The docking bink video for the prison station also starts the lag. The short video of a cannon or something in the Horizon starts the lag.
The intro video which starts if you wait long enough after the company logos starts the lag.

BUT. The docking videos to Omega station or Citadel do not start the lag even though they are bink videos as well. Neither do the EA and Bioware logos when you start the game.

Also to be noted is that replacing the bink videos with empty ones will not help. The lag will still be there.

does everyone here have to use the green screen workaround to get past the loading screen freeze?

I have the same exact issue as well as the youtube video, I've .bak'd the video files to get the game loaded, but once i'm in it stutters endlessly, I got Past the begining to save and reload and it worked on max settings perfectly fine untill i hit another video / cutscene and right after it started doing it again.

From what i've read it seems everyone who has this problem is on a AMD system, I'm running a AMD 64 x2 5600, 2gigs ram, Geforce 9500 GT OC

Updated the OP a bit, remember to post your spec please cause the original topic we are mixed with other issue, so we need to separate spec from the original one.

I have a AMD 3200+ and I have the same problem as you OP. Had to do the green screen fix for the loading and now the game is doing the same thing in the video.

Same...

AMD FX-55 (2.6GHz, single-core.)

Win XP SP3.

4GB Ram.

2x Nvidia 6800 Ultras, SLI.

Creative Audigy Platinum Pro 2.

Green screen loading fix, stuttering after every bink video until I save/load.

Will agree, since until now all those that posted in this topic are all AMD CPU, but not many posted spec yet in this new seperated topic, so it not really conclusive for now.
