Full armor sets versus mix and match?

For all armor sets, you get a bonus if match up your sets -- all studded leather pieces, heavy chainmail, etc.  For rogues especially, however, you do find individual gloves, boots, helmets, etc. that have important abilities but are not part of a set -- higher critical chance, improved back stab, etc.

So, what usually works out best?  Sticking with the matched set?  Or going with high quality individual pieces and losing the match set bonus?  Just curious as to how you do the math on such equipment decisions?  I'm inclined to think that if you have two high quality items -- usually the gloves and boots -- that's better than the matched set.  If you have only one high quality item, it's better to stick with the match set.  (I appreciate that breaking up a matched set may make your PC look lame...)

Matched sets are great choice early through mid-game, depending. However, by midgame you start coming across single pieces with enough boosts to surpass matching sets. ESPECIALLY if you are past a first playthrough and have DLC and expansions.

For example, I play a Rogue often, and Battledress of the Provocateur does better than any matching set for me. If I ever replace it, it's only with Shadow of The Empire and then later Felon's Coat, which are also single items with no set.

Hell, early on, before my Rogue has STR 20, I have Battledress on Alistair, which makes him a much more effective tank than any heavy armor sets available at that stage of the game.

In general, the best sets in DA:O tend to be heavy or massive armour - it follows that warriors are generally the most likely to make use of them (but sets still aren't necessarily the best option).

Casters have essentially no sets - none include robes or other mage oriented gear.

For rogues, the only light armour set worth looking at is the dalish leather. However, that's still not nearly as good as the bonuses provide by the Felon's Coat (alone), so you're better off using a mix later in the game.

Heavy and massive armours have more sets (and more powerful ones), and the set bonuses usually offset the big fatigue penalty. A notable example is Wade's superior heavy armour set - you can switch out his chestpiece for Evon the Great's mail and still get the set bonus, which nets you great defensive stats and a bunch of regen for only ~3% fatigue.

On the flipside, a lot of sets only offer fatigue boosts, and not even big ones. The warden commander set's chestpiece is great, but the gloves don't give anything much and the set bonus is meh - mixing its chestpiece with other gloves and boots is perfectly fine. Then there's also the knight commander's plate to take into account - it's probably the best tank item in the game, but it's not part of a set.

When I play as a warrior, bigger is always better and my warriors always end up in massive armors.  Mages have their own outfits unless they're arcane warriors.  Outfitting rogues is a more complex decision for me with anything from light to medium armors being justifiable.  I've always assumed medium armor was more appropriate for dual wield rogues who get in the thick of the fight while archers could settle for a good light armor set, but actually it may be the either way around with the dual wield rogue needing lighter armor to move in and out of engagements with warriors quickly.

Wade's Drakeskin Armor is pretty good.  Wade also makes a range of armors from Dragon scale/bone.  The massive armor looks good, but the lighter armors look lame based on images found on line.

I'll have to look up the felon's coat, but I prefer something that looks more "military" or like a uniform.
