I want to drive out the locals, purge the wildlife and create my own empire with a strict military code and ridiculously harsh punishments for the most mundane offenses.

And every planet is called "Meredith" with a number, Meredith 1 will be our homeplanet.

I WANNA

No.

Colonization != Imperialism. Period.

It depends on how it is handled.

I mean look at the situation if the roles were reversed. Would an uninhabited planet, sitting in Alliance held space, being claimed by a previously unknown species be something that the Systems Alliance would just let slide? Sure the world was empty of a population, but it is still a vested interest to the Alliance government.

I suspect that while ME:A will feature a bunch of essential imperialist mechanics for gathering resources, building power, and planting flags in things it won't actually try to discuss the topic in much detail.

Why? Tensions with indigenous people are one thing, but a guilt ridden parallel with the subjugation of natives by western society would be something altogether different. I'm very much hoping that if I ever have a moment in this game that makes me go: "This reminds me so much of Avatar," it's purely visual.

I would also appreciate not being reminded of Avatar (because it was awful), but there are other films which have discussed the theme in more interesting ways. I think Lawrence of Arabia could make a pretty good inspiration for a game.

Sounds cool if such political perspectives can be brought into the game and choices for the player.

I always wondered why they didn't just do that.

Orbitally bombard the tree village. The crater might even reach the Unobtanium deposits underneath and make subsequent mining operations easier.

RDA didn't equip their expedition with WMD's. Even the explosives they were attempting to use at the tree of souls were normally used for mining operations. And really, that plan was actually viable. Its only weak link was Jake's mutiny and warning the moon's entire neural network.

Do we get a sequel where the humans come back with a couple of old ICBMs they got from North Korea in exchange for a few loaves of bread, and then they proceed as planned?

Hell, I'd settle for them getting some modern MBTs and Attack Helicopters with armour that can't be defeated by a goddamn bow and arrow. I can buy those on the internet right now for the price of a used Mercedes

Send me to subjugate the native americans blue cat aliens. Give me a couple thousand rounds of ammo and a couple bottles of vodka and I'll have your unobtanium by tomorrow afternoon.

Well, we are getting a sequel, but it's yet to be seen if the humans return with orbital bombardment capabilities. Something tells me may, since that would make for a pretty short movie.

That would also get in the way of all the preaching and naivety...

Man all this speaking about Imperialism made me soo itching for a good conquest campaign because let's be honest exterminating natives is so much better if they enter in the eco-friendly and one with the nature stereotype. I hope we get a good flamethrower because torching space-hippies out of their tree-nest is something I'm looking for and then transform their green lush planet in a such industrial wasteland  that would shy those made by the Soviet Union back in the days. Tons of concrete!!!!!

Pretty please BW????

Nuclear weapons are actually worth something, why not just tow random space debris (asteroids are actually fairly common) and drop it over the world.

A few impacts and everything within a few dozen kilometers of impact is dead.

Plus doing it this way makes future mining easier, there will be impact craters.

So far the only game I can recall where we can destroy the lives of natives, other than Custer's revenge, is Pocket God, but I can only throw so many islander pygmies into a volcano before I get bored.

I hope so.

It would be a very good, complex theme.

I am not speaking hyperbole or satire when I say that I really do hope to establish humanity as the dominant species in Andromeda.

I do want us to enforce gunboat diplomacy and peace through superior firepower.

We'll offer a beer in one hand and a gun in the other. You're choice which one you want.

Pathfinder! The blue cat people won't let us mine the eezo under their favourite tree! Without it, our civilian ships will be stranded here. What should we do?

We can negotiate.

Geez. The human experience with imperial and mercantile expansion depended on trade of goods in and out of, and emigration from the home country or in some cases with the absence of the latter, the existence of indigenous elites and conflicts that could be manipulated to your own interest. You don't go to war with the 'natives' for whatever reason, unless you know you have, along with the population base, the advantage of superior technology and the support if needed of  the home country. And in the absence of goods (or people) that can be traded with the home country the motive for acquisition is pretty limited (gold doesn't have an 'intrinsic value').

I doubt that the explorers in MEA will have that level of connection with the home GALAXY.  You could see the explorers become involved in a conflict internal to Andromeda, but I can't see that their interest would go much beyond alliance for their own protection and survival.

Edit:

Google 'metis' as a example of what happens when outsiders depend on locals for their survival and prosperity even where there was trade and exploitation of local resources.

Another factor I think is that ____ spaceship will likely have a mixed crew, a lot of different species and religions -- to the extent these are visible -- working towards a common goal. You would tend not to see the race and religion based extremism in attitudes that were at least a surficial characteristic of the Old world dealings with the local population. The spaceship would tend more to be the Canada that Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland envision.

._.

The ship should be nothing like Canada that anyone envisioned.

We have no big brother figure to defend us or support us. If anything we should be Napoleonic France. Strategic alliances, combined with overt input to local cultures via domination of economics and outright invasion.

Funny thing is, that with a few million colonists at best and the tech to built a massive spaceship which seems to have been converted to a habitat or was it all the time, you could set up shop in one solar system, if it has similar resources like ours +eezo and be content for the next few thousand years or so. Build orbitals instead of settling planets. Probably even more defensible.

Ugh, I so don't want this.

I want to arrive in Andromeda - establish colonies at the ass end of the new galaxy and at the end of the first one have the Andromeda races show up in their massive fleets prepared to quarantine us, process us and dismantle any dream of supremacy.

I might have to wait for reviews of ME:A before purchasing...
