The appearance of the crossed paths

Maybe you all already know about that and I'm like the last person who just "got it".

But it is a detail I really appreciate for it is not world-changing, not relevant. But beautiful for it reveals the love and effort the designers put even in the smallest aspects.

When you enter the Eluvian, you come across the old streets of the elves. The crossroads.

The very moment I visited it for the first time in Trespasser, my characters started discussion whether it is a beautiful nice place to stay or a dark place, full of shadows. They came to the conclusion that the view differs whether you are elvish or not.

This is an interesting idea for

1. it gives you some special connection to this place and the magic bound to it if you are Dalish

2. .... it maybe is some kind of greeting from the dread wolf to welcome the lost elves, who are to arrive as refugees,

View as an elf:
Please ignore the language settings and also the group constellation, I somehow lost it after a part of my team left as soon as corypheus was defeated (...)

View as a human
I asked a friend to take this screenshot for I really wanted to know if there's a difference. And indeed, there is.

I wasn't impressed. Too many bad points about Trespasser overshadowed this. And the difference isn't that significant anyway.

The detail I most appreciate is that one of the Veilfire messages in the Shattered Library says "Duck!" Almost literally.

That is really amazing, OP, I had no idea. I don't play as elves, so I wouldn't have seen this for myself.

Thanks for posting the human shot as I nearly always play as elves and my human hasn't got that far yet.    I knew it looked different to humans because when my Lavellan comments on the colours one of my other companions, Dorian I think, says how it doesn't look that way to them.   I'm pretty sure Sera sees the colours too but I only had her with me on one run.

Of course this was a watered down difference for non elves when travelling the Crossroads.   In Masked Empire non elves feels physically sick when they are there and travel much slower but I guess that would have been too difficult to implement so they went with the different colour instead.    It's nice to know you do get some bonus for being an elf, even if Solas and Abelas don't see you as a proper one.

I only played as an elf for Trespasser but it's good to see they carried this through! I remember reading about elves and humans experiencing the crossroads differently in The Masked Empire and was curious about it when Morrigan showed the Eluvian to the Inquisitor. Awesome.

Never saw it since all my Inqs are human warriors. Place just look slightly prettier. I think mages, depending on race, should have some inkling of the underlying power of the Crossroads, while the rest won't. Elves would see it better, the others, slightly murky. Comments from party should reflect this, give a hint.  Given that the Veil would / might be torn down in DA4, I guess everyone would perceive magic and the surroundings in different ways.

It was fun, but I wish there was a way to implement it better. If you bring Sera with you, she remarks about the dizzying colors, but if you switch to control her, it doesn't look any different. I realize that it would have been difficult to implement that way. The lighting and light effects are baked into the level (an entirely different level loads if the protagonist is elven) and can't change on the fly based on who the player is controlling at the time. But it would have been nice.

This comment reminds me of something similiar you come to face in the fade after Adamant.

You meet some creepy spider-like creatures in there and the group starts discussing for the creatures do not look like spiders for some party members. You got the explanation that they look different for everyone because they are some kind of representation of the very own and personal fears. A friend of mine said he would have loved it if the creatures would have changed appearance based on which character you are controlling.

A great idea but hard to come by I guess.

^ Related, but I was rather disappointed that every possible party member doesn't have a comment. It would have been nice to know what each person sees. That said, I don't think some characters are willing to admit what their fears are. For example, I can't see Vivienne sharing that kind of info.

I found it quite interesting getting to know the biggest fear of every companion when visiting the "graveyard" in the fade. That
really hit me hard. But yeah, some dialogue regarding the creatures and the fears connected would have been great. It was

also sad that the dialogues with the demon were so short for his mindgames and doubt-planting were the most interesting thing

in the fade, I loved that,

I didn't notice this! That's great, I love stuff like that.

As an aside I just finished Trespasser actually, and another detail I loved was the end credits... I am so glad I stay for them.

This is along the same lines as the Crossroads section Morrigan takes us to looking different depending on race. I love that they elaborated on that concept here. :)

With human and qunari inquisitors (I don't know about dwarves), the first (and maybe second) time they step through an eluvian into the Crossroads, they hold their hand to their forehead and shake their head a little, as if they have a headache. The animation doesn't seem to persist past the first or second time, though, and it's easy to miss.

^ OH! Wow, I'll look for that next time.

Lol I'm kinda torn. On the one hand I like that they add these subtle touches that you have to be paying attention to see. On the other they can be so easy to miss that many players won't see them at all and miss something that is fun and immersive.

Another reason to like this community.

I got to know some dialogues and scenes I didn't experience because someone in here was telling me about them :)

I can see red leaves on the trees for the elf picture - the trees for the human are bare. And the sky has coloured swirls, like oil on a  body of water. And possibly a bigger sun - or is that just the angle?

Makes you wonder what Solas sees when he looks at this scene. And whether the desolate wasteland the non-elves see is the future he has planned for all the world.

Come to think of it, my Dalish Inquisitor was seeing a green streak (not unlike the Breach) in the sky above the Winter Palace during Trespasser. I think I might have noticed it in the sky on some of the other maps, too.  Now I'm curious as to whether Inquisitors of other races see it, too.  I am guessing "no"...  :o

I like how so much focus of this game was about elves, their history, the Veil, the Fade. Makes the elves even more distinctive. They need to do something similar with the dwarves and "stone-sense".

I thought The Descent DLC was pretty cool for dwarves - it's building up to something like you're hoping for, anyway.   :)

... And now I'm wondering whether Dwarf Inquisitors might actually hear the rhythm that Shaper Valta is talking about.  My elf sure couldn't... there was noise, but it wasn't rhythmical.
