I could have sworn there was a clip in one of the trailers for DA:I that showed a male Hawke (presumably mage) being thrown down on his knees, in chains.

Now I can't even find that trailer. Am I wrong? Or was that just something in a trailer that got cut from the final game? Is that intro for Hawke possible? Or does he always meet you on the ramparts with Varric? Did I invent this trailer in my head?

There was a rumor circulating that the Inquisitor would be asked to judge Hawke for the events in Kirkwall and that the Inquisitor would have the opportunity to execute Hawke (which would cause Varric to quit), but I don't recall any images or videos associated with it.

I recall this also. Maybe that's what I was thinking of?

I rather wish this had been in the game. Not that I would have executed Hawke, but choices are always good, and it seems like of everyone we ever could judge Hawke is at the top of the list. Sure Cory's number 2 is important, but (s)he is obviously guilty all you are really judging is the punishment. Hawke started (whether intentionally or not) a giant mage rebellion and led to the split between Templar's and Chantry. Of any single individual in the entire universe Hawke provides the most morally grey area and really, really needs to be judged. I'd mostly let him go anyway, cause I don't have a 'kill previous protag' syndrome, but I feel being able to Judge Hawke woud have added a lot to the story and being able to characterize your Inquisitor.

Clearly dropped in favour of a different plot outcome for Hawke where you get to choose.  I suppose you could argue that your decision could be at least partly based on how you feel about their responsibility for mage/Templar situation.   Can't say more because of this being non spoiler thread.

Judge Hawke.... for what?

Hawke didn't do anything but choose a side. It's not like he/she started the war or really even did anything but fight in it.  I take so much issue with Hawke and the importance the games throws at him/her, when aside from Qunari Hawke didn't do anything or influence diddly squat. Remove Hawke from DA2 and the only thing that changes is the fate of the family (and any idiot could have agreed to take Flemeth's amulet), Varric would have died in the deep roads thanks to Bartrand, and the Qunari would have ruled Kirkwall, the rest of the stupid game would have still happened. Well ok, the Arishok would have put a stop to things and Leandra would still have gotten killed... But that's another rant.

All Hawke did was choose a side and fight, just like everyone else. So then I guess we should round up everyone else who was in Kirkwall. Guards, gather Varric and Commander Cullen and bring them into the throne room in chains if you please. And send some dwarves with pickaxes to Kirkwall to chip out a certain red lyrium statued person for judgment... And here's arrest warrants for Kirkwall's Guard Captain, Merrill, Fenris, etc... oh and the Prince of Starkhaven for "making" Hawke kill Anders under threat of war. All those mages, get them too. Templars, buy your boat tickets.

If anyone from DA2 should be judged it should be Anders if he survived.

It was a rumor. They aren't all true.

As for why people would even say something like that, Hawke is a highly controversial character, especially a few months before DAI came out. A lot of people were screaming for his or her blood, fantasizing about killing him or her in the most brutal way imaginable. Hating on Hawke was quite in vogue. You may not hold Hawke personally responsible for the Battle of Kirkwall, but at the time, a lot of people did. Me, I believe that the rumor was intended to illustrate the concept of Skyhold judments and to illustrate how follower approval would work in the new game, nothing more.

They could have done that to Hawke, when Cassandra is kicking the hell out of Varric. It was funny to see Hawke just causally appear in Skyhold, around the area Cassandra loves to stab things and not be seen.
