I agree that I don't want those tie in plot points/characters... to play such a big role. For example, if you have read nothing previous to DAI, just played DA2, even with all of its DLC and then jump to DAI you get this screen of templars and mages going forward, click new game and suddenly it explodes and you're in...somewhere, and spiders? light woman, cleric..? Wait, prison? Cassandra?

The game assumes you knew from before buying the game that you knew about the Conclave, and who had gone there. I know such info could be found in the cards on the character creator, what I descrived is what would happen if you don't read them. Still, the wtf moment of the explosion until you get to the CC is inevitable unless you read interviews about the game.

If it had started in the prison and then your character tried to remember things I thing it would have worked much better, but hte point is that you get confused unless you read interviews.

But the same could be said true of ME.  I started playing on ME2.  It was only the direction that the story went that led me to finish playing ME1.

The difference is that it´s somewhat to be expected that you don´t know everything when you buy a game with a 2 or 3 in its title and didn´t play the previous title(s).

You mean like DA2?

:P

I mean, I get where you're coming from, but I honestly don't think that BioWare will put out any more "sequels".   They might continue the story of somebody, but they won't have any more numbered games.

EDIT :  I think that Bioware learned that lesson pretty well with the amount of hate that was directed at them from DA:O for not continuing the Warden's story.

Agreed. This is one of the reasons I have failed to even finish DAI. I don't connect to the story or the characters because they were introduced in some book or other. I feel like Dragon Age passed me by. Not only the game, but also the fandom. I have tried to plough through a couple of the books, but in my opinion what works in games often doesn't in other formats.

Regarding Mass Effect, we have Kahlee Sanders and Kai Leng from the books. Sanders is just okay because she doesn't do much. Kai Leng is the second worst thing that happened to Mass Effect after space kid. And let's not forget the last novel was an absolute disaster even according to people who generally like this kind of books. Considering these precedents, I hope book influence in the new game is minimal.

Nothing offends me more than when novels have the gall to wear ties.

I don't if I'll get behind this. The novels had better stories than the games. At the least ones I read.

i do not view DLCs as secondary sources, they are part of the game and if a player chooses not to buy them then that is their choice no different from choosing not to watch a season of a tv show. I do however view novels as secondary sources and it should not be important to have read said novel to get an idea what is going on in a video game. As for someone who never read any of the DA or ME novels i have never felt out of the loop. I lied i read Asunder so I got the Cole backstory and I regret doing so because that portrayed Cole is such a negative light that it was no "advantage" on my part. I felt DA:I gave me all the information I needed to understand things but then again i actually READ the codex entries so maybe that is the more important issue.

Tie ins pretty much killed the Halo series. I'd prefer they be kept away from Mass Effect, or pretty much any video game.

If they absolutely have to have them, there's a basic rule that 343 seems to have forgotten: don't assume anyone, much less everyone has read it.

As a person who read all books except Last flight I still agree.

One thing I hated about Inquisition was that the novels had almost as many references as the other games. In mass effect there were several nods, which I think was perfect. I genuinely felt Cole, plots with Orlais, and a few other points were severely lacking due to over reliance on secondary source material.

Can we go back to nods instead of direct references that need to be understood without a vague feeling of confusion?

Well, yeah, you should never have to purchase tie-in stuff to get the whole story. Now, using tie-in stuff to EXPAND on the story? A completely different matter.

I wouldn't mind a prequel book to Andromeda actually. Depending on when the game starts knowing when and under what circumstances they left would be nice

Also how the ship was built and the people behind it. Would be nice, were gonna get this in an exposition dump anyway :P

I think and hope that they are going to burn that whole ME3 thing and left it behind as it never happened...

Personally, I am not a big fan of EU material, but you can hardly blame them for expanding the franchise.
