This. Over, and over, and over again this. Stories are meant to be about people - that's one of the underlying foundations for why story emerged in human culture at all. 

 

These characters - these people - are the reason why I've come back to Mass Effect again and again, furthering delving into their feelings and pasts, finding what makes them tick and gaining new perspective on them. I think my favorite thing about the Mass Effect characters is not the ones that I loved instantly (Garrus, Wrex, Thane, Ash, Joker), but the ones that I came to really appreciate over time and multiple play throughs (Tali, Jacob, Jack, Samara, Vega). 

 

There's a lot I'm thankful for within the ME series (deep exploration gameplay, great dialogue system, branching plot, etc), but more than anything I think what keeps me playing are the characters. That's what makes me wistful and misty eyed every time I finish a trilogy play through and conclude on the Citadel DLC.

 

It takes my breath away and leaves me thinking, "I love this, so much."

Garrus Vakarian, Urdnot Wrex, Mordin Solus, Thane Krios, Legion and Javik. The best 6-man band that never was.

I'm thankful that I didn't particularly mind the ending and still love Mass Effect, enjoy playing all three games, and have a good time.

 

*ducks thrown fruit* I'm teasing! I'm teasing!

 

But yeah. I'm thankful for Vanguard Charge, and drunk Tali, and Helena Blake. I'm thankful for the way Garrus says "Hmm". And I'm surprisingly thankful for the Citadel arena, because smacking around clone Sheps is fun.
