One thing I have noticed while playing, is that whenever I give one of my companions a new armour, it not only looks different, but also looks good.  With my character, it seems to be restricted to the same three s***y looking armours.  Is it not suppose to be the other way around?

Apologies if you know most of this already.

There are three tiers of armor for the Inquisitor and followers, and each of those three tiers will increase in appearance (more stuff added) as you go higher.

Dorian's robe model is the best example for me to use: tier 1 is a very simple wrap with one shoulder strap; tier 2 is the full wrap with collar and draping; and tier 3 is the full wrap with collar, draping, and an additional leather strap across the front -- you know, so the baddies have something to fling him around with. The Inquisitor's armors are similar, only they vary by class as well, with added class accessories -- warriors get a battle horn, mages get books or scrolls (like Dorian wears), and rogues get lockpicks. These accessories will show up on all of the armors according to your class. The addition of arm and leg upgrades also alter the appearance in various ways. All of the "Sturdy _____" pieces have an additional appearance as well. With all of the different options for crafting and upgrades, there is actually quite a large variety of difference among the three basic appearances for the Inquisitor.

If you dislike a certain level of gear, you may find that you like something else that you just can't craft yet, or a different tier, or something along those lines. My personal preference for warrior is the Vanguard Mail (T2) model, and its upgrade, Battlemaster Mail (T3), with Vanguard Armor Legs (T2) and Battlemaster Armor Arms (T3) in the upgrade slots. I'm able to craft a set pretty early on and wear it for much of the game.

The followers actually have two looks that vary according to tier, with an additional slight variance for the Sturdy pieces. But overall the Inquisitor does have more variety than the followers. Armor from loot drops will still follow this same pattern of appearance as the crafted pieces, only those may come with upgrades and various materials tints. The exception to the loot drop model would be that there aren't any of the Inquisitor Armor model, which is restricted to crafting only. So, with loot drops both the Inquisitor and followers have two basic appearances that you will be receiving as the game progresses.

Yes, basically, most of the armour in the game is ugly, like the hair. There are a few pieces I tolerate and only a couple I actually like. For the Inquisitor, that is. Companions are better, but not spectacular.

Bioware needs new aesthetics people.

I still think that the Origins armor sets are the best.

Eh, it's a personal preference, like many of these things. There are certain looks I prefer for each class, and on each of the followers as well, and I tend to stick to those throughout the entire game. Since I don't play on nightmare, I'm a bit freer to veer away from higher tier stuff whose appearance I dislike.

I miss set bonuses! :D

Thanks for the responses.  I also found to my horror that the light armour is the same as the medium armour.

At first I didn't really notice the lack of decent armours for my character, it's only when you have been playing for a while that it dawns on you, your character is looking as shabby as they did on day one.

I was expecting to find some nice pieces lying around as you did in DA2, but what ever you find, once worn is the same, no matter how good it looks on your companions, it looks s**t on you.

Only armor in the game i like is Iron Bull's. Though i do think the add ons make the armor look better.

In general, the armors are lacking in aesthetics, but there are a few good ones. Here are my favorites

One is the new calpernia armor (the "skin that stalks" schematic). It looks great on mages using either red or blue (depending on whether you're a fire or ice mage). As for rogues, there is something badass about the white dye version together with the white cowl (it almost reminds me of Assassin's creed). Fortunately, this is one of the few no-upgrade-slot armors that doesn't have crappy stats. Unfortunately, this armor only looks good on female characters.

Another favorite of mine is the griffon mail. It makes Varric look really cute, in a grey warden themed outfit.

Glad I'm not alone in hating the inquisitors armours, the only piece I liked were the prowler tier 3 boots. The companions got flattering and more appealing armour especially Cassandra, Sera and Dorian. As I always play an elf  the schematics for Dalish armours in game look better than basic inquisitor armours. (luckily for me) But the Qunari dlc armours do look good on a qunari inquisitor too.

I have bought the Qunari dlc just so I can look the part.  As you say, your companions look great, but your character always looks the tramp of the party.

I would have thought that BW would, by now, realize the selling power of a good looking character, but it seems to have passed them by.

What this game could do with, is one last dlc, dedicated to character creation, but, find someone who knows what they are doing, to do it.

Everyone has a different concept of what "good" means. I liked the armor, for the most part. About the only thing I didn't like was how the female variants were often bugged. One pauldron stood straight up on the battlemage armor. The female dwarf rogue got lost inside hunter armor because it used the human female torso. That kind of thing. I do wish the heavy armor looked heavier, though. If it takes 22 pieces of metal to assemble, I'd like to see more metal than sleeves.

I am now trying out a male character, and not only do armours fit and look much better, but the male character is much prettier than any female character I can create.

Now that i think about it, i also like the Armor of the Knights Divine armor. It especially fits if you pick the Templar specialization.

It's not just the companions that get better armor. Even some minor background NPCs get better armor than the Inquisitor does.

This is the case with many of the armors, unfortunately. Several of them only have textures and/or models for human male and female, and sometimes only human male.

Yeah, I figured that was the case when launch was less than three months away, but we were seeing nothing but human male Inquisitors. When questioned about the absence of female protagonists, the reason offered was "We're still developing the female models." They seem to have run out of time. I'm hoping they don't leave it until the last minute next time.

The part I can't understand is why no patch addressed the floating mage shoulder or the dwarf-in-a-barrel armor. These issues were reported within the first week of release, but they still aren't fixed.

(cue complaints about male elven arms) Yeah, I know, but that's kind of an aesthetic thing and it might not appear wrong to everyone. If you can't see the dwarf's face because her head is somewhere under her chest armor and if there is an 8-inch gap of empty air between the belt of her coat and the belt of her pants, that's a major issue.

i just have issues w/ the shoulder spot on half of Cassandra's gear missing and some of the qunari mages shoulders too... you would think that they could patch that after 1 year...

but WORST OF ALL...

i HATE the inquisitor elf player character!!!!!!!!!! those shoulders are just about as wide as their hips!?!?!? i hate it... i can't/won't play elves at all because this....

could they not put a custom head on the body of Solas' body or Sara's??? really seems like it would just be a line of code to pull that off!!!
