Kei Leng was infuriating.

While I don't hate anyone, Garrus is overrated as hell. Tali too. :/

Well I'm not a fan of the Catalyst and what it did to the Reapers' character; though I think it has more to do with it being the poster child of the fans' collective post-ME 3 freak out than anything else. On it's own, and with plenty of context and proper lead up, I wouldn't really have a problem with a similar character in another science fiction setting. Its just that its appearance was so sudden, and so contrary to what the Reapers had been depicted as up until that point that it didn't 'fit' Mass Effect. Trying to squeeze The Matrix: Revolutions, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution into the last 15 minutes of a 100+ hour trilogy doesn't work (IMO).

Now Ki Leng was annoying, and had blatant plot armor for the sake of being the players' rival, but I tended to gloss over his presence; just as I did with all the other stupid 'space ninja' stuff. In fact, I was more annoyed with Cerberus essentially being the primary focus of the third game than I was with a random anime character thrown into a fairly standard (up until that point anyway) western sci-fi setting.  To me, Ki Leng was about the same as Jack running around in a vacuum with nothing but a breather mask; profoundly stupid and lore breaking, but not something that detracted from my overall enjoyment of the narrative. Whenever I see things like that, I just mentally roll my eyes and then focus on the other stuff that I find more interesting.

The Leviathans were both refreshing and a massive disappointment at the same time. Refreshing, because they attempted to capture that Lovecraftian vibe that the Reapers once held; before the Catalyst destroyed all of that characterization; and disappointing, because they were essentially Reapers: Skin Edition. It was painfully obvious that BioWare was trying to back pedal from the whole ending fiasco; and I do applaud their effort; but creating a character that is 99.99% identical to your previous big bad just felt so… I don't know, lack luster I guess.

Now the character I disliked the most in the Mass Effect series would have to be Wrex and the whole manipulation of the Krogan and Genophage narratives to suit a slanted agenda. I personally had no problem with Wrex as a companion in the first game, he was belligerent and glaringly wrong about many "in game" historical events; see his views on why the Genophage was enacted for an example; but really that was a part of his character, and a part of his charm. It's when the narrative of the game started to get retconed to match his very skewed stance on things that I started to dislike him. He went from being a loyal, if misinformed/racist mercenary to being the poster child of the Genophage Arc and how evil it was, and that anyone that approved of it's deployment was deplorable d-bag. There was a lot of revisionist history going on in the third game; from the Geth whitewashing, to the Reapers as mindless murderbots; but this was one of the arcs that annoyed me the most. Casting the Krogan as blameless victims of Turian warmongering, and Salarian manipulation was a complete disregard of previous lore.

Forget about the centuries of Krogan aggression and unchecked expansion leading up to the Rebellions. Forget the many worlds environmentally devastated by Krogan industry. Forget their unprovoked attack on a species, that up until that time, wasn't even a part of the galactic government that they had a grievance with. Forget that the Krogan dropped asteroids; an action reserved for only the most deplorable of people; three times on said species. Forget that the result of these terroristic tactics are three garden worlds that are still un-inhabitable 2,000 years later. Forget that the general Krogan population has refused to acclimate into galactic society, and that their interactions with the Turians, and Salarians has been seething hatred (to put it mildly); how many Krogan would be perfectly willing to kill one of those species, and their entire families if they could get away with it; despite the former's actions to supply Tuchunka with foodstuffs and the later's maintenance of the Shroud; keeping the Krogan home world remotely livable. Forget that the Genophage isn't even a sterility plague (it only brought birth rates down to pre-Indusrial levels) and that it has been the Krogan's own fatalism that has led to their decline. Forget all of that and focus only on the plight of a poor, downtrodden people that have done nothing to deserve the tortures of a cruel, racist galaxy.

We are expected to cheer on Wrex/Wreve when they hold the galaxy hostage, demanding a cure. We are supposed to grieve for the dead Krogan young rather than the countless millions dying everyday the allied forces have to play doctor. We are supposed to stand up for the Krogan's demands in the discussion between them Primarch Victius, and the Salarian Dalatress despite Wrex (if he survived) promising total support against the approaching Reapers only six months ago. We are supposed to see the Genophage as nothing but an unjust evil, because the game doesn't give us an option to call Wrex/Wreve (but especially Wrex) out on their hypocritical BS. The only choice in regards to the Genophage are agreeing with the biased agenda, or siding with the one dimensional; almost cartoonish; Dalatress who's whole stance could be summed up as: "I hate the Krogan, and I love to see their dead babies.

I really wish that the game would have left the Rachni forces (should the player spare the queen) intact and then let us choose which force to go with; maybe getting both if they played their cards right. Not only because I (arguably) see the Rachni forces as being superior to the Krogan in many ways, but because I would have loved to take the wind out of Wrex's sails when he tries to put the Reaper war on hold:

"Well Wrex, you want us to drop everything we are doing and cure the Genophage or you will withhold support; despite your promise to me earlier. The thing is though, the Rachni Queen has been breeding an army for the past two years, and she is willing to work with the galaxy against the forces coming to kill us all with no strings attached. So given the choice between having to put all of our operations on hold and cow tow to your demands, or work with the species that has been fully committed to stopping the Reapers at any cost, I think were going to have to go with option B."

"We will be willing to hear your re-negotiations, should you decide to give them, but I have a galaxy to help save and don't have the time to waste playing politics with you. So good luck holding Tuchunka with no aid and no ships, I will be working with the Queen who, unlike you, is willing to work with the galaxy despite what their ancestors did to them, and asking nothing in return for their aid."

I don't know if I hate more Jacob or Kai Lang. Kai Lang after all is a retarded Power Ranger villain. And is somehow his job being hated. Even if is hate born by how sad was his writing.

Jacob was basically the "character I don't much care but I don't hate" until ME3. Now I really can't stand him. Is a sad, horrible stereotype I hate. The good looking guy who can't keep it in his pants. Bleah!

I prefer the CataCasper to him. -_-

BioWare would be better off just creating another new character alongside Vega who is always there, rather than sticking us with nothing but Vega, EDI, Javik (if you bought the DLC) and the VS, provided that character survives the coup.

I would not have been against the idea of a new character, KaiserShep. If anything, that would have been a great idea. In my opinion, it would have made the universe seem like a larger place. In fact, two more. The whole team felt too small in the third Mass Effect.

I don't think I "hate" any of the characters.

That aside, it depends what we're talking about. If you mean a character I would personally dislike if they were real, then probably TIM, the Leviathans, Aria, and a few other crime lord types like Elanos Haliat or Elias Kelham.

If you mean a character I dislike as a player because they're annoying or have implausible motivations, I tend to dislike characters who are just bizarrely stubborn or trigger-happy for the sake of forcing a confrontation, like Harkin in ME2 or Ethan Jeong in ME1. Also Charles Saracino for still making his "remember Terra Firma on election day" pitch even after I tell him that I disagree with him.

Udina but he is meant to be hated.  He is fun to hate.  Besides he has his moments.  Gavin Archer is pretty easy to hate considering what he did to his own brother.

Kai Leng for me, every time he showed up I couldn't help but roll my eyes. Shepard could've put up a much better fight against him, the fight with him at the end of Priority: Thessia was an annoying scene to watch for me at least.

I don't really hate any mass effect characters, but there are some I dislike. I came close to hating Kai Leng and the catalyst. I thought they were both terrible. As far as companions go I really disliked James, Jacob, and EDI in ME3. I liked EDI in ME2, but found myself annoyed by her in ME3. I don't think she should have been a companion.

I completely agree about Wrex and the genophage. Utter whitewashing, and downright poor writing. I didn't get a single chance to bitchslap Wrex for forcing me to move Eve through a warzone for the sake of his paranoia, I had to side with him when he butchered the Sur'Kesh mission, and I had to keep talking about what a great  person Wrex was.

It made killing him on Virmire so much easier. I had one playthrough where he's alive because I wanted to see what he was like on the Citadel DLC. I regret it, because he turned into a Mary Sue.

I've never truly understood this, but then again, it all depends on whether you view Shepard as a blank slate or an empty canvas.

That's too vague, more details please. Do you hate him/her for being the hero/heroine and the only one to defeat impossible odds?

It's not quite that. I think it's more of the treatment of the character, and whether or not you indulge in this particular style of escapist character.

I hated Kai Leng from the start. Not because he was the guy who won due to silly reason, but I hated the whole "Ninja in space" thing. He looked like he was trying to cosplay as Robin and used a sword, acted like he was trying to be badass, and I'm supposed to take him seriously?

Depends on how you view his speeches. I rather like them.

Then again, I like the '4th of July' speech in Independence Day.

And I like it unironically.

I liked Bernadotte's proclamation to his soldiers at the outset of the Leipzig campaign (15 August 1813), I liked Antigenes' trash-talk before the Battle of Paraitakene, and I have an unhealthy adoration for most of Sam Grant's military quotations. It's not that Shep is too rah-rah because I can like rah-rah. It's not that Shep is purple because Bernadotte was purple.

The best thing that I can come up with here is that Shep's speeches sound too tryhard. Same with Kirrahe's (in?)famous lines in the first game. Like a junior officer who's heard generals make good speeches and wants to imitate them but doesn't know how.
