When I buy a French cheese over here it doesn't taste as good as in France. I suspect the French keep the A-grade stuff for themselves and to lure tourists.

Which country do you live in ?

Your friendly neighbours to the East - no point in arguing with long distance haul. In truth, I guess it's a climate thing.

I can't tell for you without specifics, but some countries have a very limiting legislation regarding french cheese. Besides Russia who put an embargo on european food products since last year, those american sissies  :P don't accept french cheeses if they haven't been pasteurized like 10 times. Chineses also reject cheeses containing mold.

Those guys don't know what is good. B)

I don't know how this topic ended up on the subject of food, but I wholeheartedly approve. I'd also like to discuss cheeses but it will make me cry. I love cheese, but cheese hates me.

That's good news! More for us then. Let them eat their sterile stuff then.

How about running cheese à la contrebande to Russia? I know there's people there who'd value good foodstuff.

Are you trying to attract me into illegal activities ?  :o  :D

Until a few months ago european exporters tried to bypass the russian embargo by simply making their products transiting by an other country and being relabelled. But the russian authorities have increased their vigilance lately. They even destroyed some european food a few months ago.  <_<

So be careful : this would be a very risky job ! ^_^

A significant proportion of the human population is lactose-intolerant, although it's not geographically homogeneous.

The bigger mystery is why most humans are lactose-tolerant, since we are pretty much the only mammals who retain the ability to digest the stuff into adulthood.

Even bigger mystery: why Quarians and Turians can digest levo-lactose.

Never tried Finlandia,... One day mb.

You should, one of my favorite vodka for sure. It tastes smooth and pure...Kinda like Gray Goose.

The worst kits for my 200 waves is most likely the batarian vanguard and batarian adept and the shadow.

Mostly I haven't played the batarians because I built the vanguard for melee, and he just makes it so easy. And boring.
And the adept I built with the harrier and so I can incendiary warp cheese while throwing cluster nades, he's just op.
And shadow because of the anger of cloak, shadow strike, marauders elbow. :/ else I would play her so much more.

Likely it has represented a survival advantage at some point in our evolution.

Not that much of a mystery, iirc. I think the trait appeared after humans started to herd cattle (we also happen to be the only species that does that ;) ), as being able to use the milk directly (as a source of water and nutrients) as opposed to wait for it to become low-lactose cheese or not use it all is a huge, huge advantage.

yeah, even industrial camemberts are better here in Normandy than in the supermarkets elsewhere in France. But maybe it s only an illusion ;p

Lactose-intolerance doesn't apply in the case of matured cheeses, as the maturing process makes them naturally lactose-free. In short: the process breaks the lactose into lactic acid already in 3 to 4 months. The older the cheese, like most emmentals or edams, the less lactose it contains.

And I know Arkhne loves well-aged Emmentals here (named 'black or blue label'), but he just can't digest them well. I, on the other hand, have been lactose-intolerant for over 20 years now, and can tolerate those matured cheeses just fine. :) --- A common subject of serious emmental-envy in this household.

With cheese it'd be rather caseine related intolerance.

ehm. That doesn't stop with the camemberts : all good - Pont l'Évêque (Not Brie - although I also like Brie), Cidre, Honey, scallops (coquille?), ... btw does an english word exist for Pont l'Évêque, at all?

Like I said, it might be the climate. The sea adds a special flavour and I always smack my lips thinking about a nice fish (so juicy and sweet) when I get near the coast.

Which was only a few thousand years back, and yet the genetic ability has spread through the majority of the world's population. The timescale is the mystery. A little searching will find several research papers attacking the problem, but with no clear solution as yet.

It's not really hard to imagine a hungry family remembering how to still their newborn and looking at the animals doing it and drawing a conclusion. Now what really intrigues me is how people found out about the stuff needed to do to make cheese. Or Espresso - that guy must've been desperate for caffeine.

I think I finished up 5 characters by grinding bronze solos.  They weren't even necessarily bad characters (Talon, Volus Merc, I forgot the other ones), but I didn't like playing them in general.
