DAI has an interview where they removed a scene where Leliana impostor seduced the Inquisitor, but it was removed because they perceive it as rape by one of the female staff members. I'm just waiting to hear what people's thoughts on this, and I hope people can avoid the snarky remarks in general. Certain topics like child killing or rape or racism are very sensitive since people can be affected by it, but it also brings out certain awareness and a strong emotion and connection to the characters if it fits with the narrative. I'm not talking about intentionally forcing sensitive topics into the game, but if it's organic and happen to fit the characters, I feel like it should be used. It's not also about being edgy or pushing the envelop, but if it's a topic that happens to come up in the game, if they should avoid or try to put in the alternatives.

One of the most powerful scenes I found in video games is with the character Angela from Silent Hill 2, which is about personal purgatory. She was sexually abused by her father, while nothing ever mentioned explicitly, her manifestation created a monster with a bed with 2 figures, and the batons coming in and out of the holes. She always carries a knife with her, and in the end, James finds himself in her purgatory with fire everywhere, indicating how she feels about her life all the time. She killed her father and running away, looking for her mother, who ignored her suffering, mistaking others for her mother. It also created a contrast between her and the main character, James, who also killed someone that caused his suffering. The character also brings out some very emotional pain and state of mind where she talks to James like he has savior complex and point out the hypocrisy and weakness in his behaviors. It's very powerful and pulls the audience in when uses organically.

There are several examples, but I don't want to detract from the discussion, and I'm not sure if it'd get locked since it is a sensitive topic, and I don't know if people would start mocking and attacking. I do see why some people may not like certain topics, especially if it's personal experience, and some topics can get pretty cliche. It's just about artistic vision vs. sensitivity, I guess.

While these topics are... interesting to discuss i personally don't feel like this is the right place to talk about it. Threads tend to be trolled or simply go off topic very quickly. Do note that this is my personal opinion. Dots.

The problem is the very fact that these are potentially very sensitive topic.  And as such, need to be handled very delicately.  And can all too easily backfire.

As for the whole Leliana imposter thing goes, it's probably better off cutting it, and not just for the potential squickness.  The imposter was

Should certain topics be avoided?  Probably.

Will they be avoided?  Maybe, maybe not.  What matters is how they're handled.

I'm honestly not sure, it depends on how it's handled and if it's handled well with care to me.

id love it if bioware wasnt censored. let them do what they feel is right.

however, the sjw's would complain and it is probably best for them to avoid topics like rape.

The only topic I really don't want to see is terrorism, but I guess that won't make it in anyway. Everything else is fair game if it is handled correctly and well written

The way you have worded it makes the removal of that scene sound stupid, because seduction implies that both people are willing and not drugged. The only way i could see it as problematic would be if i wasn't allowed to resist, as that is taking control away from me playing my character.

Certain topics do need to be handled with care, but if we're going to take the whole "games are art" angle then we shouldn't shy away from a topic just because it makes people uncomfortable.

I don't think any topic should be avoided just because it is a sensitive topic. I do think many topics should be treated with considerable care, and part of that is being able to step back and realize it's not going to work in the story you're making.

Whoever is on the vid is a Fugazi fan, so I'm cool with that.

I heard it wasn't bad for an mmo actually.

This. I'm generally opposed to the writers restricting themselves just to avoid bothering people. Everything is going to bother some people, without exception. I do think that execution should be considered very carefully.

Well, considering Jack was used (and by that I take it to mean sexually) and then sold, I think that BioWare has handled these things appropriately in the past.  Seeing as how no one has brought this up.

No, these topics should be tackled, they shouldn't be shied away from. Especially if gaming is supposed to evolve and be a more respected medium, then it's important to show these subjects.

BUT, they would have to be handled n most mature and respectful ways. They shouldn't be used for a cheap shock or because they want the game to be "edgy".

It wasn't, until Funcom made the biggest mistake any developer can make: listening to the players.  Their hairbrained ideas for how to make PvP "better" absolutely destroyed the PvP community in that game.

Oh well, it was fun for 6 months.

If the topic is sensitive then use it in the story to evoke sympathy for the character or make players see some aspect of the issue in a new light.

Do notr:

1) Flee from it to appease over-sensitive people.

2) Put it in the game merely for shock or nose-thumbing value.

3) Engage in hamfisted preaching and moral preening.

Agreed. The problem isn't really bothering players, it's bothering players in a way they didn't intend to.

All depends on what risk they're willing to take. Dealing with sensitive topics, there's always going to be someone opposed to the content, so something to consider.

It all comes down to how much they want to trust in their artistic vision on that point.

It's kind of like how they expected the ending of ME3 to make people think in all sorts of ways, and it just resulted in an angry fanbase. That wasn't even touching on a touchy social issue, that was just the end of a game. The writers must be very careful when handling pretty much anything, lest blowback occur.
