I've heard that some IT people wonder if the Vancouver Vent Boy may have been a figment of Shep's imagination and a sign of indoctrination during the Vancouver invasion.  So my question is...  why?

Why the Vent Boy?  Assuming the catalyst/reapers caused this hallucination, why do it?  Why would causing Shep to imagine VB, have nightmares about VB, and finally taking the form of VB at the Crucible possible help with Shep's indoctrination?

The problem I have with the vent boy is that he's the only child that is seen in the whole trilogy. Yes it was sad he was killed when that shuttle was destroyed, but he wasn't the only one  killed. Had there of been other children seen in the trilogy, I might feel differently about seeing that kid being killed, but I didn't. I felt closer to other characters that I knew were killed before vent boy showed up namely Ashley/Kaidan. I'm a little surprised that Anderson didn't ask Shepard What are you doing, we have to get to the Normandy or Is there something in the vent when he looked back at Shepard. Had Anderson of seen the kid, he might've made a comment.
