I have played all three games ... I couldn't guess how many times... well over 20 times each I suspect.

For me, the main  sign of the great, enduring companions are the ones that I don't get tired of/annoyed with after playing the game innumerable times.

  • In DA:O I was left with Alistair, Sten, and Morrigan.
  • DA:2 with Varric, Isabella, and Aveline.
  • For Inquisition my companions are now Dorian, Cass, Varric, Cole and  Solas.

I am curious if others feel the same way and who they find are the most enduring companions....

I've been much the same way and it's one thing I love about this series. No matter how many times I play, the interaction with certain companions keeps me coming back long after I should have quit. Even though I never make different choices. xD

DA:O - Alistair, Sten, Zevran
DA2 - Fenris, Varric, Aveline
DA:I - Solas, Cole, Dorian

It's impossible for me to go anywhere without them. I'll try and then turn around and go back to change it. For me, these are the ones that ground me to the story and make it more...alive.

It's interesting to see the different setups for players because we always seem to pick those that fit well with who we are. And I just realized that I have yet to really connect to any female companions aside from Aveline. I really liked Isabella and Cassandra but none of the ladies have had an impact on me the way the guys do.

DA:O: Morrigan, Shale, Oghren/Wynne (Morrigan is a Nug xD and I like Shale's Ornithophobia, reminds me GLaDOS somehow)
DA2: Aveline, Varric, Merill (I think Varric's most funny dialogues are with them, also, Aveline is probably the toughest tank on the series)
DA:I: Cassandra, Sera, Iron Bull. (Cass is mandatory due her effectiveness and that she has interesting conversations with all characters while Bull and Sera; well.. mayhem )

DAO: Loghain, Morrigan, Sten -> These three are my all time favorite party in any DA game

DA2: Isabela, Varric -> I like Aveline but sometimes she's just a bit too stubborn, I never recruited Fenris

DAI: Varric, Blackwall -> Those two are with me 90% of the time, I like the others guys too but just not as much

I do tend to settle into a preferred party...

In DAO: Alistair, Morrigan and Leliana.

In DA2: Aveline, Isabela and Varric.

In DAI: Cassandra, Sera and Dorian.

I try to switch my parties up to see all the banter, but those are the groups to whom I return most often.

That would be assuming people get tired of the characters specifically. It would be simpler to ask who their favorites are.

DAI - Dorian, Cassandra

DA2: Still debating if I should play it (it's $9 now so maybe... but hmm, the graphics).

DAI: Solas, Cassandra, Cole.

DAO: Alistair, Zevran (b/f), Wynne (mainly for heals) ~ I don't know how "enduring" these three are, but I sort of feel obligated to bring Alistair because he's my fellow Warden, then Zevran is my LI, and Wynne is necessary for heals (plus I dislike Morrigan)

DA2: Fenris, Isabela, Aveline ~ Well, these are truly enduring; these are three of my favorite characters in the franchise. I do dislike the bickering between Aveline and Isabela, but it's hard to find three characters in DA2 who don't fight. I also find it very easy to play DA2 without a mage.

DAI: I honestly don't have a preferred match-up; DAI just has too many companions... I try not to have Bull and Dorian together because I don't like their "relationship" that develops... otherwise, don't really care who's with me; I haven't gotten "tired" of anyone but I have no preference. A lot of times I don't take Vivienne with me because I just can't imagine someone wearing what she's wearing going adventuring. (And I love Vivienne, so it stinks.) Cass and Blackwall are pretty identical as S&S warriors; all the mages are equal since they can all cast barrier and can do elemental magic. Varric I can say I do get tired of; he really shouldn't have been in a second game. So I'll almost always choose either Sera or Cole, both of whom I really like.

DAO (Canon Female Cousland): Alistair. Ahhhhhhhhh! I'm in Alistair wonderland in DAO (yes, he's my LI!) Leliana (my shoe-loving BFF!) an a good archer. I bring her everywhere. Wynne: Awesome Healer.

DAO (Male Cousland Version): Alistair. He's a good tank, helps me from getting killed. Morrigan! Yes! My lovely Morrigan is a spirt healer. She goes with me everywhere. Leliana: I don't trust Zevran very much.

DA2: Carver, Isabela, and Anders. Post Carver, Aveline. And that moment where Isabela runs off, Varric cause he's the only rogue left.

DA2: Female Warrior Hawke: Bethany, Fenris, and Isabela.

DAI (Female Mage Trevelyan): Dorian (BFF), Cassandra (yeah, a good tank), Iron Bull (yeah, I want to get there couple)

DAI (Male Mage Lavellen): Cassandra (LI), Vivienne (Yeah, she's good), Iron Bull (good team)

DAO:

- Alistair, the only warrior that is more or less already geared into S&B and a good tank.

- Leliana: favourite rogue and if I'm not romancing Alistair normally it's Leliana so well :D

- Wynne: because I always be the "do good" hero XD

- Dog: Just for fun on all Cousland PTs & Amell

DA2: meh... usually Aveline, and someone I romance, and Varric. Never put Anders & Fenris on a same party or with Merrill since it'll just give me so much headaches. Although Seb & Fenris is quite great pair in term of banter & functionality.

DA:I

Solavellan PT: (basically this combination gives such a nice & heartwarming banters...)

- Solas

- Cole

- Cass

Non Solavellan PT: Fun, more or less lots of snarks XD

- BW/Cass

- Dorian

- Varric

I realise i'm giving my favourite party to take which isn't quite what's being asked, but for me I figure it's the best way to answer as Merril is the only companion that I actively dislike in the franchise and DA2 Anders the only one that consistently annoys me but I do have characters that are a mile ahead of others in likeability and endurance for me and they're the ones I take with me 9 times out of 10.

DAO: I've never been able to break away from my Alistair, Wynne, Leliana party. Honourable mention to Morrigan. I hardly ever take her out with me once I have Leli but she is a favourite.

DA2: Aveline, Varric, Carver. Post Carver it's Isabela.

DAI: This game has me switching my party around more than any other game but the ones I nearly always have in one combo or another are Cassandra, Dorian, Cole and Solas.

Yes, true - I did assume some companions would be annoying over time. I could also  have asked if players get tired of certain players and if so which ones... or I could have asked  who are the least favorite players etc.

Regardless it is interesting to me which companions remain engaging as characters no matter how many times the game has been played.  I used to love Wynne for example, and then she seemed to become so preachy it started to drive me crazy. I adored Anders, but after a while his incessant pro-mage-poor-me approach started to wear thin...On the other hand Alistair's silly quips and pouts still amuse me to this day - while apparently driving a lot of others crazy. Dorian's self-agrandizing and Cole's naivity don't make me crazy, while I cant abide Vivienne's  banter and approach.  Go figure

Party enduring characters:

DAO:  Alistair (since well, I really need a tank and he's not that bad), Morrigan and either Sten/Dog and in Awakening: Sigrun =3  I love her quips and her optimism.

DAII:  Varric (He's my bromance with Hawke, no way I'm leaving that lovable dwarf behind and his banter, quips and unending loyalty to Hawke remains engaging.

DAI:  It seems that I use Dorian and Cassandra the most.

Not sure if we can NPCs but I adore Dagna.  =3

DAO: Alistair, Nathaniel and Wynne (Yes, I know, Nathaniel was in Awakenings, but he is my constant companion in that addition to DA:O)

I know many find Wynne preachy, but I love the fact that she's the one who seems to be looking out for me, checks in to see how I'm doing, and tries to keep me focused on the prize. Yes, she preaches and teaches, but she has my best interests at heart. I loved Wynne throughout the series and shed tears when she made her final exit in the book.

I loved Nathaniel, his dry humor, his intelligence and his growth throughout the game. I never grow tired of him. And I never grow tired of Alistair's self-deprecating humor, and his well-hidden intelligence and leadership skills that pop out when you least expect them.

DA:2 Fenris, Carver and Aveline

Fenris doesn't suffer fools gladly, and that chip on his shoulder really becomes a bone of contention from time to time, but he is true to himself and ultimately to me in the game.

I love Carver too! He is such a younger sibling, obviously late teens, early twenties with all the spit and fire and angst that being that age includes. A young man, trying to figure out who he truly is, and what his purpose is in life. Of course he's an a**. So many men are at that age.

Aveline-truest of true, goddess of order, loyal to the end. I never grow tired of having such a good friend.

Inquisition: Solas, Blackwall and Cassandra (or Cole)

Solas - Wounded healer, man with a terrible secret, tragic figure destroyed once by hubris and about to make the same mistake again. A man who wishes to be good, to be remembered as a hero, but ends up being the villain. For some reason, even though I set my mages up to cast protection spells - he is the one who seems to be most consistent in doing so. He wants so desperately to be good; I wish he could be.

Blackwall - Simple, direct, terrible past, seeking redemption. Best tank in the game.

Cassandra - Hot-headed, but so honest, with herself and her flaws and with others. Woman of action who has the ability to admit her mistakes and seek to repair the damage done by them. The Righteous Warrior, the true Seeker, forever on the path seeking truth.

Alistair, Merrill, Sera.

In their games, respectively. Never put them out of the party. Ever.

Origins - Morrigan, Alistair and Sten

I started dragon age 2 and recruited all the companions, but I couldn't continue after completing the deep roads exhibition. The game just wasn't for me. from that progress so far I liked Anders, Varric, and Isabella. I really didn't like fenris because he seemed arrogant...how is he so popular? carver was annoying as well.

I've played inquisition a few times now, and the characters I don't skip lines during conversations are Sera, Solas, and Dorian. I actually like cassandra and varric but listening to the same conversations again gets old. The least enduring character was vivienne.

I love Wynne, too :) She was a stand-in mom for my poor Mahariel/Tabris, both of whom had lost their mothers.

-_- You only played 1/3 of the game... you don't have any clue as to why Fenris acted the way he did, whether he grew or improved, or where his story led. Which is totally fine! But it's funny to then wonder why people like a character you barely know lol
