Origins: Morrigan is bae. Leliana used to be bae but then they gave her too much plot importance for no apparent reason. Stern and Alistair are also great.

2: Fenris x Male Mage Hawke on the friendship path is the best Brotp other than Varric x any Hawke. Carver is my favorite fictional little brother that I never had. Seb's also a decent guy.

Inquisition (never played but from what I've seen...): Blackwall, Cassandra, and Varric, ofc.

Part of my party composition depends on what class I'm currently playing. But for simplicity's sake I'll go with my 'canon' worldstate.

DAO: I was a sword/shield warrior female city elf, and in most of my DAO files I was a sword/shield warrior of some sort so my most enduring companions were Wynne, Leliana and Oghren. (Or at least Sten until I went to Orzammar.)

DA2 saw a change in mechanics and thus my class. I was either a dual wield rogue female Hawke so my companions were Anders, Aveline and Fenris. Or, I was a spirit healer female mage Hawke so my companions were Aveline, Varric and Fenris. (Though honest to the Maker I'd have paid good money for an extra 2hander warrior who was pretty neutral on the whole mage/templar issue.)

I'm quite new to DA:I but so far I'm a sword/shield warrior female Trevelyan. I tend to favour Varric, Iron Bull and Dorian.

Of course I'm planning to have a different worldstate where I'll be playing as a mage female Trevelyan, but without the traditional healing magic I'm at a bit of a loss. I expect I'll try a party of Varric, Iron Bull and Blackwall.

In DAO I tend to rotate everyone save for Sten and Wynne. I don't hate Sten though.  I think some of his dialogues are funny.  I just don't care to use him much.  Of the DA games, this is the one where I am most likely to not have any set go to party so I get lots of funny conversations in it.

In DA2 I tend to use Varric, Bethany/Anders (once she is forced into the Gallows) and Aveline.  If I play the mage I use Isabela, Carver/Aveline (once he gets Wardened or Templared) and Varric.  I love having Isabela in the party to embarrass Carver.  I hate Sebastian with a passion and don't really care for Fenris, or Merill.  In fact, after my Xbox died and I had to rebuy the games for the PS3 I refused to rebuy Sebastian's DLC because I hate him so much.  He can suck it.

For DAI my go to party is Dorian, Sera and Cassandra.  I ditch Solas as soon as I can get another mage if I'm not a mage.  If I am the mage he gets tossed as soon as I recruit anyone else.  I dislike him almost as much as Sebastian but in a completely different way.  I also don't tend to use Vivienne, Cole or Blackwall at all.  I typically play as a KE mage and I don't need Viv.  Blackwall..well I call him Dour McSads for a reason.. and Cole.. he's just weird.  And I don't like that he can be all up in your business without your consent.

DA:O: Alistair, Morrigan, and Wynne.

DA:2 Never played it.

DA:I Cassandra, Solas, Dorian. Once had Sera, Blackwall and Cassandra, but I like the first mentioned better.

I could never go without Alistair he is just too funny. Morrigan and Wynne surely adds to that as well but nothing beats Alistair.

Cassandra is my fav tank, love her personality and how she talks to the other. Dorian is just too funny to not bring plus he casts some insight in Treviter.

Solas, is just awesome, the way he talks to the others and the way he tries to gain insight in the world around him. Just really well written character, not sure if he beats Alistair tho.

I find something to like about each companion but I'll try to narrow this down to one person.

DA:O - Alistair

Hands down. I don't think I ever did a playthrough where Alistair WASN'T in my party. He was the companion I grew most attached to as a character and I also found him very useful in battle so he was always with me.  :D

Morrigan would be my other favorite. Despite the fact that Wynne is definitely my most used mage and I often disagreed with Morrigan, I still  definitely find her an interesting character. Her development in DA:I raised my appreciation.

DA2 - Varric

Varric's like my best friend in the game and I enjoy all his interaction with the other companions. I never managed to make him angry with my Hawkes and, from a gameplay pov, I also prefer a ranged rogue. Isabela tended to die a lot. (Never had Sebastian since I didn't bother to buy that DLC)

Anders is actually the one I use the most but for gameplay reasons. He's always in my party since I find him too useful. Usually he was my healer/supporter but in one playthrough I made him a Vengeance driven powerhouse. However, as a character he can be rather grating since practically all his dialogue is about the mages vs templars.

DA:I - Dorian

Simple: I never get tired of Dorian.

Cassandra actually might be the most constant character in my party since she's my favorite tank. Although I like her for other reasons too than her effectiveness. In fact, I do think these two in general are my favorite DA:I characters (from the companions).

For me, the main  sign of the great, enduring companions are the ones that I don't get tired of/annoyed with after playing the game innumerable times.

  • In DA:O I was left with Alistair, Sten, and Morrigan.
  • DA:2 with Varric, Isabella, and Aveline.
  • For Inquisition my companions are now Dorian, Cass, Varric, Cole and  Solas.

I am curious if others feel the same way and who they find are the most enduring companions....

Wonderful post and great topic! Here are mine, below:

My favorite DAO companions were:

Sten, for his quiet snarky humor, for his utter willingness to pay whatever price was needed for his crimes (I have to believe it as temporary insanity, although I wish it'd been just a bit better written); also for quiet and wordless devotion to my Warden (my personal canon was that he loved her and she loved him, but both knew a gulf separated them). I will always love Sten, and sniffled at little at every, "Kadan." And Mark Hildreth gave an amazing voice performance and imbued him with so much humor and quiet tenderness. I always felt like my Warden saved Sten -- not just physically, but in all ways. I still wonder if he's the current Arishok in DAI-verse -- THAT could be interesting!

Zevran, for the disparity between the damaged, abused childhood, and the person (however ruthless) who still managed to find joy, humor and love in his world and life. I disliked his early conversations (which basically all have to start with, "so tell me how awesome it is to be an assassin!") but if you get beyond them and learn about Zev as a person, he's just wonderful. And hilarious as a companion to boot, whether hitting on Wynne and Leliana, snarking with Shale or Alistair, etc. Zev is ridiculously awesome. I plan to romance him on my next DAO playthrough for sure. Very complex and rewarding character.

Morrigan, for similar reasons to Zev. She was raised in a pretty awful-sounding environment (how much of that was misconstrued is still up in the air to me after DAI), and her palpable love and friendship for my female Warden kind of broke my heart. Claudia Black is just so amazing in her voice work too, giving Morrigan so much heart and nuance, not just snark. I was delighted at her DAI return; my only reason for playing "Witch Hunt" was to give her a hug and wish her well; I love Morrigan and always will.

Alistair -- I loved him, and my Warden romanced him. I adored every bit of humor and snark, every line of goofy self-deprecating dialogue. However, I was slightly disappointed ultimately in Alistair's brittleness -- his willingness to totally abandon everything if ahem, certain plot events didn't go as he wanted (my Warden did it, but she hated it)... but I still loved him. He's not my favorite romance RPG-wise but he's one of my favorite Companions, despite everything. I even like how unbendable he is.

Leliana -- Nightingale was constantly with me as my main rogue before I figured out Zevran was an equally interesting character (from these Bioware boards!). But I loved Leli and after her evolution in DAI there's something heartbreaking about looking back to the vulnerable sweet Bard of DAO. She was a lovely and touchingly supportive companion, and often very funny. I loved her song at camp (don't judge me).

Wynne: Okay, a great healer, but while I liked Wynne for that, as a character she was more rewarding as a camp member. Although her banters with Alistair, Zev and Shale were hilarious as well. But she also irritated me on occasion with her pretty conscious moralizing (I was especially angry to be lectured on my relationship with Alistair when we had already both been sentenced to die early and tragic deaths as Grey Wardens). But she was a great healer and pretty essential strategically. I also liked the way she came around character-wise in the end.

Shale -- Oh, what isn't there to love about Shale? The humor, the pathos, the wit, the unexpected gender reveal, the fabulousness. Loved her. Great tank.

In DAI:

There's nothing more rewarding than mixing up Companions in DAI, because even my least favorites yielded incredible rewards in story and character development as the game went on.

My favorite DAI Companions:

Solas: Um, forgive me while I collect myself from the sodden weeping mess I am. But yes, Solas. By the end of DAI, Solas is certainly shown to be one of the most complex characters in the game (even better if your Inquisitor/Lavellan is romancing him). The insight, humor, genuine emotion and intelligence make him so worth taking along. Especially his palpable and growing affection for his companions, especially Cole, Bull (if he goes Tal-Vashoth and you choose the Chargers), Varric, and Cassandra. He also shows a real and fascinating interest in Sera and while her side is antagonistic, I argue that he really cares about her as well. If you romance him, it's also pretty heart-bendingly, lushly romantic.

Iron Bull: Where do I count the ways? For his humor and confidence, for his absolute assurance for who he is (and his pansexuality and absolute casualness about that is fantastic), for his support for his companions and Inquisitor, and especially if romanced, for the funniest, sexiest and most unexpected romance storyline in DAI. It's not as classically gorgeous as the Solasmance, but it's satisfying or heartrending, depending on your choices in a certain pivotal moment. (Also: If you don't romance him, he and Dorian are just... everything. Trespasser is even more rewarding for the AdoriBull.)

Cole: I didn't really like Cole, honestly, until I took him out as a Companion, but quickly I loved him so much he became my to-go Rogue for every single mission in my first playthrough. His genuine curiosity and sweet vulnerability and naivete quickly made him a favorite for me. And we learn some much about Cole from missions (versus the convos) -- and Cole is the best companion for learning about the inner hearts and minds of our companions. I chose to keep him human first playthrough, spirit in my second, and I still feel horrible about #2 (hated it). Cole is a lovely and fragile character. As a writer, I also love how alliterative his dialogue tends to be.

Sera: Sera was another surprise for me. In my first Inquisitor playthrough (an elf Bull-rider), Sera liked her by the end, but we never got any rooftime (although we did get cookies). I only really fell in love with Sera in my second playthrough, in my second Quizzie with a Solasmance. The funny thing is, my second Inquisitor was a really elfy-elf girl (which Sera hates) but she was also far more willing to be gentle with Sera's feelings and to simply accept that Sera needs her delusions/beliefs about elves, and not to challenge her all the time. By "Trespasser" I found Sera utterly adorable and essential -- so that even though I had always simply brought Cole as my Rogue, this time through Sera was my girl, and her visible heartbreak at the Inquisitor's danger in Trespasser I found moving and really poignant. Sera may not love easily but she loves deeply. It's worth something if she loves you.

Cassandra: Cassandra surprised me so much. I thought in the beginning she'd be kind of boring and pedantic, but her quiet sweetness, support, friendship and humor really make her a lovely companion to bring along. She also shows a real evolution in her feelings for Bull and Solas, too, and it's fascinating to watch.

Dorian: I almost typed "DORIAN!" because I love him so much. He's farther down on my list but it's only because I love so many of my DAI companions. My favorite thing about Dorian is that he's so emotional -- he is accessible, curious and always charming, always talking, always willing to risk and reveal. He asks how we all are after a fight, he shouts out adorable things like Zevran mid-battle like "I'm too pretty to die!" and how could I not love him? He thinks he has the thickest armor but my favorite thing is that Dorian has no armor at all, bless him. Love him.

Varric: I love Varric. He's easy to love. He's also witty, smart, but for me he brings an (understandable) desire to play the middle of the road and an unwillingness to invest to the story that is fascinating. It also made him lower on my companion list, but not because I didn't love him. When I did bring him, he and Bull and Solas (and everyone) had fantastic conversations because, well, Varric is totally charming.

Honorable mentions: Everyone else. I like Vivienne because of the layers she shows by the end (she's a ****** but she's also loyal and weirdly warm and supportive, which I appreciated). And I liked Blackwall (he has wonderful interactions with Bull and Solas and Sera) although he always felt a bit fawning for my tastes. There isn't a bad companion in the lot in DAI for me. I love them all.

I've been much the same way and it's one thing I love about this series. No matter how many times I play, the interaction with certain companions keeps me coming back long after I should have quit. Even though I never make different choices. xD

DA:O - Alistair, Sten, Zevran
DA2 - Fenris, Varric, Aveline
DA:I - Solas, Cole, Dorian

It's impossible for me to go anywhere without them. I'll try and then turn around and go back to change it. For me, these are the ones that ground me to the story and make it more...alive.

It's interesting to see the different setups for players because we always seem to pick those that fit well with who we are. And I just realized that I have yet to really connect to any female companions aside from Aveline. I really liked Isabella and Cassandra but none of the ladies have had an impact on me the way the guys do.

I agree with this -- great assessment of these games. I honestly could mix up companions forever and have an entertaining game on either DAO and DAI (didn't get through DA2). They bring the game to life.

DAO - Leliana, Alistair, dog and Morrigan

DA2 - Aveline, Isabela. I will mention Meredith even though she wasn't a companion

DAI - Dorian, Cassandra

Dog! Mine was Houndwise and he was awesome and wonderful and lovely and in my headcanon when he isn't traveling with my Warden, he is back in luxury on Cullen's ranch. Such a cute character. I especially loved Sten's nonplussed reaction to him.

Party enduring characters:

DAO:  Alistair (since well, I really need a tank and he's not that bad), Morrigan and either Sten/Dog and in Awakening: Sigrun =3  I love her quips and her optimism.

DAII:  Varric (He's my bromance with Hawke, no way I'm leaving that lovable dwarf behind and his banter, quips and unending loyalty to Hawke remains engaging.

DAI:  It seems that I use Dorian and Cassandra the most.

Not sure if we can NPCs but I adore Dagna.  =3

Fabulous, QunariPotatoHammer! Great addition: my fave NPCS: Love Krem, Dagna, Scout Harding, Maryden. And Krem. Again. I adore Krem.

Inquisition: Solas, Blackwall and Cassandra (or Cole)

Solas - Wounded healer, man with a terrible secret, tragic figure destroyed once by hubris and about to make the same mistake again. A man who wishes to be good, to be remembered as a hero, but ends up being the villain. For some reason, even though I set my mages up to cast protection spells - he is the one who seems to be most consistent in doing so. He wants so desperately to be good; I wish he could be.

Blackwall - Simple, direct, terrible past, seeking redemption. Best tank in the game.

Cassandra - Hot-headed, but so honest, with herself and her flaws and with others. Woman of action who has the ability to admit her mistakes and seek to repair the damage done by them. The Righteous Warrior, the true Seeker, forever on the path seeking truth.

Great assessment of why I loved Solas and Cass as well. I was able to forgive Blackwall but it was weirdly Trespasser that brought me all the way back around to love again. He was just so... at peace. Who he was meant to be.

DAO: Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana.
DA2: Fenris, Isabela, and the others pretty much switch.
DAI: (in order of preference) Solas, Cole, Dorian, Cassandra, Blackwall.

Solas is the one person I think is truly essential to gameplay and the main plot of DAI. He brings out the best or the most interesting aspects of every single party member every time, and is fascinating as a character, to boot. His mind-chess game with Bull is not only entertaining, it illuminates one of the game's subtle notes -- that Iron Bull is so, so much smarter and more subtle than he seems (and the fact that Solas sees and appreciates it is another interesting character note). I'll always love those little character notes. It's why I love DAI so much and can't seem to leave.

Paramitch,I agree with your thoughts on Leliana. In DA:O she is a keeper and one of my three main rogue characters I used throughout the game.  In DA:I she seems to have lost her charm since she's all business.

I know using three rogues is unusual but, that's my preferred group in DA:O.

While I will speculate, I suspect that the only person we will definitely not see is Wynne who was killed off in one of the books.  In DAO my favorites were Morrigan, Sten and Leliana for her archery abilities.  DAII Varric, Bethany - who got short shrift in DAII, Avelline and Isabella.  DAI - Sera, Cassandra, Morrigan, Leliana, Dorian, Harding and, strange as it seems, Charter.  I liked Bull, but given his dubious ending possibly not.  Just thoughts.

Companions I don't get tired of/annoyed by...

DAO: Alistair, Zevran, Morrigan. (I guess Sten too. He's too deadpan and hilarious for me to feel annoyed.)

DA2: Merrill. (Every other character just annoys me more and more the more I watch Youtube videos of them.)

DAO: Solas, Cole, Dorian, Cass, and Cullen. (The last two are oddly characters I disliked at first, but who've grown on me the more I play.)

Origins - Morrigan, Alistair and Sten

I started dragon age 2 and recruited all the companions, but I couldn't continue after completing the deep roads exhibition. The game just wasn't for me. from that progress so far I liked Anders, Varric, and Isabella. I really didn't like fenris because he seemed arrogant...how is he so popular? carver was annoying as well.

I've played inquisition a few times now, and the characters I don't skip lines during conversations are Sera, Solas, and Dorian. I actually like cassandra and varric but listening to the same conversations again gets old. The least enduring character was vivienne.

DA:2 grows on you. I wasn't a fan the first time through (I missed getting Fenris altogether), but like I said, the game and the town grow on you (the dungeons remain boring, but....). It's really good when you add the two DLCs.
