Just started the game but was stuck at what race/character to choose. I did do some research into some of them but still am not sure. Whats fun to play? Interesting and not boring? This is my opinion on some of the classes so far:

-Warrior is just overused everywhere, big guy with sword doing hack hack. However could be really powerful (too easy??)

-Elf is quite cool. The assassin type with daggers, stealth. Also you can equip a bow and shoot from afar. I always seem to like assassin style type characters.

-Dawrf (random race throwns in there??) I always wanted to have a character and become something resembling the dewaves in the hobbit. Small, but really thick bulky armour with 2 handed weapon (too similar to warrior?). Also heard you can have crossbows!!?

-Mage I never go for this with other games. Not that interested in it. However, heard its so fun, powerful, cool abilities.

So ye, those are my thoughts. I was thinking of a dwarf with a crossbow? Is that too boring? Can I try ALL the classes on multiplayer (I heard) or are there videos with each of the races/classes showing them??

What would you advise? Thanks :)

There are no crossbows for the PC in DAI. (A party member has a crossbow, but it's specially made for him and you can't use it.)

Shield warriors are pure tanks in DAI. If you want to be the forefront of every battle and be very hard to put down, be a shield warrior. Two-handed warriors are much more squishy.

Rogues, melee or ranged, are pure damage dealers. Fragile, but arguably the most powerful class. Note: you cannot be a rogue and wield a two-handed weapon.

Mages are more of a support class, as you'll be keeping up barriers on your party members. Some mage builds are devastatingly powerful, though.

There really is no significant difference between the races in DAI, though dwarves can't be mages.

Allof the different classes are showcased in multiplayer.

It's really up to you and how you want to create your first Inquisition story. There's nothing boring with your choices. I played as a dwarf warrior my first time, and I loved it.

You can't use crossbows though. But normal bows are just as good.

It's obviously up to, but if you want your character to stand out pick a non-human race who is a mage. The latter will exclude dwarves though obviously.

If you want your character to be "special" just go mage .

I think playing as an elf in Inquisition is the best option, namely because a lot of the plot is circled around elven culture, their gods and so on.

I don't really play as a human cause I'm not very fond of them in the dragon age world. But if you want to be liked more during the story then go ahead and be a human.

Dwarfs are fun, there aren't many dwarves in the story so it's kinda funny to see a lil pimp running around killing ****.

Qunari tho, I like that we finally get to play as one. Playing as one can surely be interesting.

And for class, mage or rouge (both are really cool to play as, I usually go for mage), I never play as a warrior cause ehh.

If you have no gender preference, I recommend a female elf and romance Solas. The game pretty much feels like it was written for that particular character (which I personally consider a rather sizable fault...).

You don't like mages... DW rogue :) I'm destroying enemies as DW rogue, and I'm playing on hard (nightmare is too scar :P)

Two-handed warriors are much more squishy.

Begged to differ, I don't find my 2H warrior squishy but Cass is the ultimate tank with the shield and sword. :D If anything, the mages are the squishiest.

Agreed, my two handed templar was soloing dragons towards the end of the game.

They're squishier than sword and board warriors.

CHOOSE THE ELF!

Without giving anything away, a good portion of the central story is elf-relevant (particularly the second half of the game), which I think you'll find personal investment in. =)

I mainly play female. I am not fond of playing an elf, but a female elf is alright with me, although, way too skinny for me, mainly. Male Elf? Yeah, that's not going to happen. I can't go through a playthrough if my Male Inquisitor is going to have a woman's body figure. Classes are personal preference, really. I tried out Mage first with my Female Human Mage, and I was not disappointed by how overpowered I became.

Mages rely on Mana a lot, and you will find yourself needing to position yourself differently in battle to avoid aggro and have a better vantage point. Their basic attacks aren't really damage dealers, and you will want to increase their attack, critical hits, and critical chances, for them to become major damage dealers. Try and balance between power spamming and attacking with basic attacks.

Rogues are the squishiest, but they can deal a lot of damage within a short time frame. You have the opportunity to switch between dual-blades and a bow, but note that they will have their pros and cons, and sometimes, it is better to go with the other weapon for a particular fight. Rogues do, in my opinion, rely on their specialization the most.

Warriors are very tanky, and they usually have the most health. Warriors' only problem is that they can miss a lot during fights on a hill or stairs due to elevation. Two-handed Warriors are more squishier, but their attacks can deal a lot more damage. Their main problem is that they miss a lot in general, and so, you will be relying on your abilities a lot as well. Try not to block too many attacks, because you will find yourself out of Stamina quickly, especially during Act 1.

Here's a relevant point: do you intend to do any of the romances? Sera and Blackwall only like women; Dorian and Cassandra only like men; Iron Bull and Josephine go for anybody; Cullen only likes human and elven women; Solas only likes elven women.

Good point, although mods can "fix" that if OP is playing on PC. Luckily I was able to experience the Solas romance without having to play as a female elf (which I really had no interest in doing). Mods can even adjust the body type of the character to suit the player's wants/needs; my male elf is slender but with slightly broader shoulders than default.

Of course all that is moot if OP has console or doesn't want to use mods (totally understandable).

I always wonder if these posters with less than 5 posts ever actually come back to see what people had to say in response to their question...

It is true that elves have a significance to the story-line in this game but it doesn't affect your character much. You should be whichever race and class you want, because everyone enjoys their own preferences.

A dual wielding rogue is probably my favorite class, capable of dishing out incredible amounts of damage plus the ability to unlock doors makes them a good pick. As far as races go, I had a lot of fun playing as a Qunari. Have fun with your playthrough DuskHome!

Well, you already made your choice, but I'll add anyway.

I tend to feel that human mage has the best story reason for being at the Conclave, so there's that. You also might feel better about some of the dialogue if you play as Andrastian, although I found that the non-believer works just as well depending on your outlook as the player (not the character) and reaction to NPC responses. Anything else I could say would be too spoilery, and you didn't specify whether you cared about that or not.

As mentioned above, be sure to leave the Hinterlands eventually. Just follow along with the main quests and you'll be fine. Check my sig for a couple of guides, but they will be spoiler heavy.

Have fun.

Oh! I do like Female Elven Mage the most. Despite a Trevelyan being my Canon, I still like playing other classes. I implore you to play all classes! It's all the more fun to play DAI if you play all classes. But really, Solas Romance is pretty chill...

Play all classes? What do you mean by that? Create characters with all classes and play through the story?

I would say either Rogue Archer or Mage provides the most fun for me (and overall Mages are the most flexible of the three classes). Lots of battles take place in large open areas, as well as all dragon encounters, I find ranged way less stressful than having to get close playing melee. I've played Dual wield Rogue once and had a good time, but I would still choose Archer between the two (by the way, I play on PC, maybe console players can find melee easier)
I don't see Warriors as being overused in this game at all, and they can be pretty linear in most cases. I easily consider them the least interesting of the three classes. I have forced myself to play Templar once because I love them lore-wise, though I didn't get too far...

Race-wise, for a newcomer I would suggest either Human (likely first option) or Elf. The other two races are too poorly represented to give you any sense of inclusion, especially the Qunari.

Yeah some people play the game more than once; second or third time they play it, they pick a different gender/race/class than before.

I have a tendency to play as a human female.  But I've rolled every race (I didn't finish the Dwarf though). Never played with a male Dwarf, Qunari or Elf though.  I only ever play as a male to romance Dorian.  I've also played all the classes except for archer.  I have zero interest in playing as an archer.  I will say that with the right build any class can solo a dragon.  It's just more what works with your play style.  I tend to play as mage or a DW dual blade rogue.  Those for me are the most fun.  But fun is relative.  What is not fun for me (archer) is great fun for a lot of people.

Yes I'm like the exact opposite of you, Forsythia  I prefer to play male elven archer. I have also played male elven mage and currently am playing male elven DW. I tried a female S&S warrior but lost interest. To play a female I think I need a really awesome f/f romance. Which I had with Hawke x Isabela. I do think Sera is terrific, but I just can't "feel" romantic towards her. If the game weren't so gosh-darned long I'd probably use the bi-Cass mod because I freaking love Cass and would love to romance her with a female Cadash.

My least favorite class is probably 2H warrior. Tbh I don't think I've ever, EVER played a 2H warrior. Oh, wait, I did briefly start a male Nord in Skyrim but stopped playing him after just a couple hours. 2H warrior... just not my thing :P
