I just started the game and closed the initial big rift with the pride demon. I woke up in a cabin and found a special delivery chest or something (I have GOTY). It has a bunch of different armor in it and my question is as a mage is there any benefit or penalty to wearing the different armor weights? I can't find anything in the descriptions but it seems like obviously the heavier armors have higher armor rating but if my mage can wear them without any restrictions why would I ever equip light armor?

Because a mage cannot wear heavy armor unless you craft it with Silverite which takes away the armor restriction. Each class is restricted to certain armors. Mage: light. Rogue: Medium. Warrior: Heavy. Stats you find on light armors tend to be more beneficial for mages, but there is no penalty for wearing heavy armor if you wish. There are materials available later on the game that allow you to remove the armor restrictions so you can wear any armor you want.

You might consider crafting a rogue's armor for a mage if you are looking for critical hits as part of your build.  Pair that high dexterity/cunning rogue armor (which needs to be made with Snofleur skin to remove the class restriction) with the Wrath of Lovias Staff (which has all those leather slots where you can slot bear/great bear for critical hits) and you'll get a lot of critical hits in.  You can't get snofleur until you open up the Exalted Plains or Emprise du Leon though.

The only time I could see putting a mage in heavy armor is if you wanted to try tanking with KE but, then you would still lack the ability to taunt enemies to hold agro and, Spirit blade does need to charge between hits so, a moderate tank at best, not a good one.

Medium is fine if going for crits on a mage but light still has slots for more cloth and, that's where the magic related boosts and abilities are.

There is an amulet or ring around (I think it's the former) that gives mages taunt on hit.

I still wouldn't bother with heavy armour unless you're wearing it for the appearance, as the KE can survive perfectly well enough in light or medium, but still....
