First, Bio has been, overall, very successful at keeping things about ME:A under wraps.  My wonder is in which direction will Bio take the franchise.

Will it be a RPG?

Customizing our main character does not a RPG make. Will the protagonist be "our character"? You see, our custom character determines whether our visual creation matches the voice.  For example: a voice with a texas drawl somehow doesn't fit an oriental face.  At least, not the character I had in mind. This clash tells me it's not my character.

Now a good RPG allows me to create and shape my character.  Any restriction in the dialogue prevents any chance of my creation developing a distict personality. I don't want my protagonist to become a good or sarcastic good guy. A good RPG will reward your good decisions and cut you at the knees for bad ones.  Will this be the case?

A Shooter perhaps?

Will the franchise take a direction to simplify gameplay in order to appease the masses? Bio mentioned combat but is it radically changed as in DA:I? Is the design such that any Jane/John Doe can start the game and just be able to play... no learning curve or a very shallow one?  Will the design allow for tough battles? Will in-game currency, from ME:A MultiPlayer be the only currency for the Single Player campaign (ie: buy upgrades)?

Interactive Story?

Bio did mention ME:A is interactive. Is that the dialogue wheel and a Pause button? Is it more of the same as in ME1-3? Will our characters talk to each other and force our main character to react? By interactive does Bio mean we can skip a cut scene?

Or will ME:A be a Hybrid of the above?

But ME has never been a good RPG at any point of its life, why would you expect it to be one now ?

It will be an action RPG, just like the original trilogy. They will certainly make changes to the mechanics, hopefully for the better, but overall it will be just like ME2 and ME3.

It's a game. Labels beyond that should be tools to describe and discuss it not rules to trap it in.

Hybrid of all of the bove apparently. And possibly more..... Guess we will have to wait and see.... Someone sugested we would be able to fly our ship to our destination... as in not just pick a destination.

Would that involve the possibility of a more involved ship combat? Probably not, but I hope for some new gameplay. Flightsim or RTS added on top?

It will probably be a third person shooter with some RPG elements, just like the other three.

I don't see them touching the formula too much.

So much this. The most RPG-esque of the 3 was ME1 and I can't say that did the gameplay any favors. At the end of the day, Bioware is making an action-RPG, which usually entails a much lighter rules system than you'd find than say Baldur's Gate.

If high charisma only gets you a pretty bauble or a few Francs, what's the point?  Besides, if our protagonist is searching the Cluster for a home world,  do you need high charisma? Perhaps you're thinking of playing the Diplomatic card when dealing with the Cluster's home species?

'Cause sometimes I fall prey to romantic notions of old style RPG games, where we could shape our protagonist. I mean, I can really take owbership of my character.

Besides, if Bio reads this, they may throw us a bone.

You could just play old-skool RPG games then like Divinity Original Sin, Pillars of Eternity or Wasteland 2... ME has always been an RPG-lite TPS - and getting lighter on the old-skool style RPG with each iteration.

I'm sort of expecting ME:A to be a story focused TPS with some small nods to RPG-esque things; basically twitch-play with some powers.

This is stamp collecting. Christina Norman already led Mass Effect away from labels in ME2 and talked about it. The game has elements from different genres.

One can argue for more speech options, skills that affect gameplay, etc. without falling into this sterile label debate.

I wouldn't be too optimistic.  Bioware's response to such things seems to be "SO BEIT!!!!" if you know what I mean.   ;)

It just worth remembering that more traditional RPG elements in no way whatsoever means a better game, as genre alone doesn't make a game better than other. Obviously, one person might like this type of game more than other, but in no way putting classic RPG elements in Adromeda is a must, nor it will make it a better game by themselves.

Indeed, ME1 is the most "classic" RPG in the trilogy and also its worse game as far as gameplay mechanics are concerned.

I'd like the protagonist to have their own shining characteristics. They can be charismatic in their own unique way.

I expect it to be a third person shooter with RPG elements that increase longevity and customization.

I hope for loots and exploration more in line with ME1 although greatly improved in quality and variety.

Also ME1 still has for me the most engaging gameplay despite what others might say I loved the powers and classes of ME1. Combat was clunky true but that issue is more related to fluidity of movements and controls than with actual gameplay. ME2 and 3 classes were way too streamlined.

Surely you are not suggesting that a RPG equals poor gameplay mechanics?

He's indicating the opposite. There's nothing wrong with RPG mechanics, but in ME1's case, simply being RPG mechanics does not prevent them from being perceived as poor RPG mechanics by many.

What do you define ME1,2,3 as?  It will be the same as those, different story, engine, and such but BioWare will not go away from the things that make them successful.

I would advice steering away from any kind of "romantic notions".

Core game design descision is not "a bone"

Indeed I'm not. The problem with ME1 it wasn't that it had an inventory system and a more traditional looting, leveling up and stats based combat. The problem is all those elements were poorly developed and they didn't support one another and therefore didn't created a good gameplay. Indeed, ME1 gameplay mechanics are average at best.

It's interesting to mention Deus Ex: Human Revolution here. In a way it's the opposite of ME1, it had most of the things I just mentioned, yet they were well developed and fitted together (and with the overall game) nicely. It's a amazing example of how traditional RPG elements can be used to create a more action oriented gameplay, without sacrificing neither. I wouldn't mind ME:A going this route at all, but every game needs its own work.
