So I wanted to get some of my thoughts down and "on paper" while the game was still fresh in my mind. I beat it way back last year or early this year and the game was good at the time, probably the best effort (only effort?) we had seen at the time for an open world triple A RPG. I realize this is late and has been hashed out 1000 times by now.

For perspective, through both play-throughs I've done everything or just about everything possible in the game and made the opposite choices more or less (mages-templar) (morrigan-inquis drink) (Hardened Nightengale and not) etc. I didn't intentionally drive any party members away however.

I do not have any DLC, but that is my main question: Does it add anything to the game or is it more of the same?

Positives-

-Character interaction: Was great, the cut scenes were nice and the development if you persisted for each character was notable.

-Skyhold: Was great to have a cohesive base of operations, it really really helped to bind the game together into a cohesive thing.

- Wartable: Was nice if you spent the time developing some of the threads there

- Dragons: Were great bosses, and the first time you fight one with different abilities it is epic, they felt distinguished and nice. Wish some of them weren't sleeping though!

-The locations: are beautiful and varied and you can tell they were crafted with care.

- Crafting system and customization: These were both great almost zero complaints.

Negatives-

-Empty world: All told I spent some 230hrs in the game doing everything, I'm just a completionist by nature even if I'm not particularly enjoying it. It is strikingly barren compared to some other games that came out afterward and even before then it felt a tad dull/ fetch questy

-Story: It's really really short; you think you are just getting into the game and then it's over which is a shame. There is also no real sense of Danger from Cory and it doesn't spend near enough time fleshing out the themes. An entire game could revolve around the Orlais civil war plot and it took...2hrs?

Superfluous Characters: Cole and Viviene in particular were imo unnecessary. Some may differ but those were resources that could have been spent better elsewhere.

- Loot System: I personally prefer using in game weapons/armors nothing feels better than beating a boss with an epic weapon and armor then taking it from them for immediate use, most just felt lackluster or found far far too late to be of any use compared to the crafting system. I'm not sure how you balance it, but it could be better I feel.

Anyway just throwing this out there if bioware are still collecting feedback for DA 4.

Jaws of Hakkon gives you a nice add-on story to follow, focusing on the previous Inquisitor, and a there's new ability at the end. Its a map with points of interest and some astrariums, so "more of the same" in that sense. But they're not mandatory.

Descent adds its own storyline and touches on dwarven lore, so that's fun if you are interested. Also its the darkspawn infested deep roads so there's lots of fighting.

And Trespasser caps the story of the Inquisition main game off, as well as setting up the likely conflict for DA4. I'd consider Trespasser mandatory, personally.

Spoils of the Qunari and Avvar are pointless, imo, since I dislike most of the aesthetics of the gear they grant. And the one piece I do like is currently still bugged and won't appear correctly on my qunari anyway. >_> But if you like how they look, then go for it.  :wizard:

While Cole didn't have a strong connection to the story other than being a tie in to Asunder, I think Vivienne had a role in showing the political ruthlessness of Orlais and represent pro-Circle attitudes. I don't think she was used as well as she could have been, but I would argue her role in the game in more relevant than Dorian's. Dorian is more of a bridge to DA4

For the DLCs my rating would be Trespasser > Jaws of Hakkon > The Descent.

Trespasser is pretty much a must-buy for me: from a story standpoint it gives Inquisition closure and sets up DA4, from a gameplay standpoint it adds a lot of new abilities (every active ability gets a second upgrade, and you can switch between the two available upgrades whenever you want), adds trials which let you fine-tune difficulty (couldn't replay DAI without Even Ground anymore - it makes enemies scale to your level meaning I can tackle quests in the order that I want). It also fixes the loot problem you mentioned, purple items now have unique abilities you can't get via crafting, making them much more useful and relevant.

Jaws of Hakkon was also pretty good, though not integral. It's basically just another region, but with more NPC interaction and side-quests which involve actual choice beyond did it/didn't do it. I also found the fights much more challenging than in the base game.

The Descent is alright, but it's mostly fighting. It's got some interesting lore reveals, but it doesn't answer a lot of the questions it raises.
